1996 Network Q RAC Rally (day two, early)

Action from the second day of Britain's biggest rally, which was held in 1996 outside of its usual position as the closing round of the World Rally Championship. After the treacherous tracks in the opening day's forest stages, crews were hoping for more favourable conditions on the traditional 'spectator day' tests.
This afternoon show was produced by BBC Top Gear Rally Report and presented by John Leslie, with commentary by Simon Taylor and Malcolm Wilson, and additional reporting by Mark James, Tony Mason, Ivan Gaskell and Bob Constandurous.

Nice to see thse cars bearing resemblance to the normal road going ones they're based on
I was at Tatton Park that day. Honestly, it was one of the bleakest days of my childhood - most of the cars worth watching were out (I was a big Juha fan) and the weather was so cold and miserable.
I was at Chatsworth for this. Missed the 2 rollovers as I was up the hill further up the stage... Though I heard the horn after the Head one. We were all largely oblivious to the carnage earlier on in the stage.
We were in a forest and Ari Vatanen came past on 3 wheels in his escort Cosworth and it was seriously snowy which was unusual for the RAC as the previous 6 years I'd not seen any. The top cars literally just skated past gingerly
As per usual another enjoyable upload well done 👍
Alway remember the commentator saying about the tree stump in a dangerous position, then the two cars hitting virtually one after the other. Things you remember.
I went to a stage at Donnington Park that year not sure which day. I am sure this year the event didn't count in the WRC?. The weather was shocking and Stig Blomqvist did a giant killing performance and finished 3rd in a FWD 16000 Skoda Felica kit car

Also that wingless Escort Cosworth with Malcom Wilson looks like a Group N spec course/recee car to me that run's first across the stage

Yes, you could buy aero delete. So no upper wing. That white car is one of fords reconnaissance cars I would think. They use the Focus RS these days

If you didn't know he was a rally driver you'd swear he was the local postman with his rosy cheeks and cheery demeanour 😳
