All the new Land Rovers, right up to the Range Rover, are amazing off roaders, but of all the 4x4s you could get, an old Defender is the only one I’d seriously consider using off tarmac because when you scrape it, it doesn’t matter, you don’t care and if you did, you can fix it with basic tools. You can also customise them with different engines, suspension, A/C, fuel-burning heaters etc etc. That 1996 Defender for example looks like a more recent version because of the bonnet and grille. It looks like one of the late ‘specials’ as they approached run out in 2016. If I was in the US I’d think about an LS3 or Coyote engine and an auto box. In the UK, Defender expertise and parts are everywhere and they are simple provided you really know what you’re doing. The even older ones, ie 40 years plus, were designed to be fixed by a reasonably adept village blacksmith in remote countries and run on crap fuel. That said I’m currently a G wagon owner. Mine has a 244 hp 3 litre turbo diesel with 442 lb ft of torque. That’s a good motor in 2023, the older ones are a bit under powered unless you get the V8, but I’d not off road the one with the side steps and AMG alloys

I am guessing because of the weight the Defender feels more powerful. The defender is almost all aluminum and the G wagon is hewn from a solid block of steel

I was hoping for some off-roading LOL I think the G wagon comes with traction control and stuff I'm not sure but I know a lot of them did. I think the only Land Rover back then with it was the 96 Range Rover Classic. But yeah at this point Land Rover is light years ahead of Mercedes for off-roading they kind of seem like they gave up I know you can custom order stuff but just from the factory they don't seem to do 4x4s anymore.

@@martinsv9183 aka 2 diff locks and basic 4wd (center lock) A Center diff lock just means Basic 4x4 from all-wheel drive mode. In that case I would just say front and rear diff lock. A regular truck that has 4x2 and 4x4 is same in 4x4 as a center diff lock when it's locked on an AWD vehicle. Locking front and rear drive shaft together is no special thing. They should call center Lock 4 x 4 . Any all-wheel-drive vehicle isn't really 4x4 before locking center just like Land Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers. But front and rear axle lockers are great!! Still I was hoping the video would actually show them off-road not just on dirt or grass I'm talking Hills and Technical Terrain

@@ronaldrrootiii6040 Not sure what you're on about the diff lock thing though. G-Wagen just has 3 diff locks.. simple as that. Most other 4WDs of the same type has 1 or 2. I never mentioned that it was special to have a center lock.... Its a bit special to have 3 locks though. That's why I wrote that. And also with the G-Wagen you can drive all 4 wheels without having to lock anything at all when not needed. Which increases maneuverability and decreases drive train and tire wear.
