Hello, new subscriber here. My son just bought a new Chevy Van and has plans to build it for camping or have some of what he can't do he will sub contract out. He is a Fire Dept. Mechanic who has served in the USAF as well. He is getting ready to retire in a year or so. His specialty is metal work....welding etc. He doesn't have akot I'd experience with wood construction but has accumulated all the tools needed. He hopes that he can do most of it himself .. so seeing and learning from your videos will be great for him. Thank you for sharing all this information. Sincerely from Debbie and Dexter-Dog my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua companion living a quiet crafty life in southern California. 🙋😊😯🏡🐾🙏🇺🇸

That’s really cool! Thanks for watching. I was about to do a video on finishing the floor but last week I left the hood unlatched and drove in the highway and the hood came up and smashed the windshield. Just got it replaced so will be going again soon. My dad is a talented builder. I get a lot of advice from him. But the build hasn’t been too hard yet. I would be happy to answer any questions for your son’s build! Having the van to haul my kayak and camp has been incredible! If I had known how awesome it would be I would have gotten one sooner. Your son will love it!”

I also would like to watch longer videos. This is great stuff and needs more lengthy videos. 8:14

I’m planning new videos soon. Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve learned a lot from working on the van build and probably a lot I forget to say.

It's a good idea to reseal the windows. If you plan on covering over them.. As that old sealant will shrink and water gets in... My 1998 Ford had that issue. So I loosened all the nuts holding it in. Then resealed them with 3M window sealant...

The first time I camped in the van I had removed the rear interior and just had bare metal walls. There was a storm that night and it rained hard. Luckily I had only one leak but it showed itself clearly. Glad i became aware of it and sealed them before I enclosed the walls.

Great details to your van. I have a ‘98 Ford Econoline but my husband didn’t remove anything other than the bed, seats and tv. My van has open drop in storage on the sides and not the usual like yours of small doors which would be difficult to store things in. Enjoy your travels as these vans make it much more comfortable than a car and better gas savers than an rv.

Thanks! I understand the trepidation in removing the interior. It just seems wrong to take the interior apart. It took many days before it didn’t look trashed and i was able to start building. I plan another video soon finishing the floor. I’ve taken mine on trips already. You’re right about being comfortable. Great cheaper alternative to an rv.

Regency made some with them overhead storage open with no doors..Running down the sides. My 1998 high top has them.. I'm about to take them out. As they are way over engineered with 100lbs of wood... And like all people do with them for an RV. I pulled that 250lb bed out. The rear seats as well... Then pulled back the wall paneling. So I could remove that old insulation. Then installed new 4" pink insulation.. I did the same for all the doors... I will add. If you take the door panels off to do work. Replace every door latch cable end with new metal ones. As the old plastic ones get brittle and break. And new cables from ford are $300.00 a set Per Door...

Thanks! It was very well taken care of. I got very lucky finding it. It needed normal maintenance stuff that 25 year old cars need. But mechanically perfect otherwise.

Did a 1998 Chevy express conversion van without removing the factory interior like you did. Wish I had gutted it because it’s a huge waste of cubic feet to leave it and the storage boxes are to small to hold just about anything useful

Yeah I was hesitant to tear out the interior. That seems so wrong to do to a car. But you’re right it’s a waste of space and no insulation. And on the Chevy they have studs formed in the walls. Makes easy to put up insulation and finished walls.

Well, I grin as I type this. Because it was such a good deal for me. The owner just retired and bought it new. It was spotless mechanically when I got it. He was only asking $2000. It had 135k miles. I paid $1700. It was a steal. But the seller knew he was giving me a great deal. I found it on Craigslist. The seats were spotless as they were always covered. But the carpets were urine stained from animals that they hauled. But I stripped the interior and now it just smells like new wood construction.
