1996 Cowboys was still Soo good. That defense is underrated and unremembered... The entire late 90s defenses were great... But when Irvin came back the Cowboys basically went 8-2 as they locked everything up by week 17 and rested starters... Him going down so early in the Carolina game hurt the team big time but with him... No doubt cowboys win and play for another chance to go to the super bowl against the Packers or 49ers who they beat for a chance to play the Patriots, who they beat, in the super bowl.... It would have been interesting... 98 was their last chance together and they didn't take the Cardinals seriously.. had they drafted Randy moss... Man they would have had one heck of a run at it again in 98 and 99. Maybe if Irvin doesn't go down in Carolina the 97 season happens differently. Who knows... Love these old polygram videos... Wish they'd show the losses like they did in the 95 one

Too bad The 96 Cowboys didn't go back 2 the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys were not the same team in 1995. Michael Irvin's arrest for cocaine and being suspended the first 5 games really hurt them. I think the major death knell was the retirement of Jay Novacek due to a herniated disc in his back. Aikman lost his favorite down the middle tight end. The Cowboys could never get his production until Jason Witten came along in 2003. Then Charles Haley's back went out with again a herniated disc. That hurt the defense as well. Kevin Williams was never a 2nd receiver and his lack of production cost him a spot on the team next year. So by the time everyone came back and healthy, the Cowboys dug themselves a hole. Then when they played Carolina, Michael Irvin and Moose being hurt really hurt the team. After 1996, that was the end of the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys and couldn't muster another playoff win until 2009.

Minor comment but even when I hated the Cowboys (as a Giants fan), always LOVED those uniforms. Too bad they don't wear the dark ones at home, those are sweet.

This was a weird season. If they hadn’t started 1-3, they probably would’ve been hosting Carolina and likely would’ve at least gone back to the NFC championship game. They had GB’s number during the Favre era, so they might’ve been able to beat them again and we all saw how they faired against the Pats.
