1995 Seadoo SPX Troubleshooting Fail - Spark Test, Fuel Test

I initially made this video to diagnose a no spark issue with my Seadoo. I was confident that was the problem because I had the Seadoo running out of the water before I took it to the lake, but once I got to the lake, it wouldn’t start in or out of the water. I tried putting starter fluid directly into the carbs, and didn’t get them to fire up. I thought I was getting fuel to the engine, but it wouldn’t start, so my next thought was spark.
Before I took it to the lake, we got it running in my driveway. My brother had rebuilt the carbs for me, but he hadn’t done anything like that before, and I’m starting to think that he may not have cleaned them out properly, and the carbs are still the problem.
One weird thing is that the seadoo won’t fire even when I put gas and starter fluid directly into the cylinders. I assumed I would at least get a few rotations out of the engine with fuel directly in the cylinders, but it wouldn’t fire at all.
In the video, you can tell it takes some time for the seadoo to fire up. It finally does, and I let it warm up for a few minutes at idle. Then I give it some gas and it doesn’t seem to hit the RPMs it should be. (I’m assuming this based upon the sound I heard).
I worked on it last night, and got it running in the video. When I went out this morning, it fired right up. I think this was a carburetor issue, but want to know for sure.
Do any of you have thoughts?
I’m going to run the machine out of the water for an hour or so and make sure I’m getting good gas flow through the carbs.
If the machine doesn’t run right, I’m going to rebuild the carburetors.

    For anyone watching this, know that this is a CLASSIC low compression situation. It will start (with difficulty) on the trailer, but once in the water it won't. Low compression was likely caused by some sort of lean condition (carb(s) wasn't delivering enough fuel), or the oil injection malfunctioned and the engine wasn't getting lubricated properly. Lean condition causes the motor to run hot (very hot) and that expands the aluminum pistons until they eventually scrape up against the steel piston cylinders and you lose compression. If the oil lines malfunction, the lack of lubrication causes excess friction which also heats up the pistons for the same result. If you have low compression (simple compression gauge test), then you'll have to pull the top end out and replace the cylinders/pistons, or bore out the existing cylinders at a machine shop and get oversized pistons to fit the larger "holes".

    Rebuild the carbs. Did mine about 4 times on a WB II 760. Of course I had no clue what I was doing at first. Starts after storage with a prime, and barely needs one now since I added V Force III reed valves.

    did you replace the needle and seat when you rebuilt the carbs? that will make fuel flood into the engine excessively it works kind of like the float on a conventional carb with the needle open fuel will flood in and not stop flooding the engine out.then you need to find out which spring in the kit you need to use by testing your pop off pressure.

    Just because you have spark doesn’t mean that it’s good. It might run but always will be hard to start, the spark should be blue not red. A good way to see this is to film it then rewatch it, the first place I would look is the coil test it first.

    Check pick up lines inside of Gas Tank make sure they have not cracked and fallen off that was my problem..

    Just replaced impeller and wear ring, my engine battery dies before can get it to keep running. Starting fluid got it to pop and run momentarily, then dead battery. This impeller must be capilating a lot cus spins fast.

    I just rebuilt the carbs on my SeaDoo GTI. What I found is the springs inside the carbs for the needle and seat can cause issues. I had all sort of trouble. Then I finally did a pop off test. The springs I installed were too big. I changed them and it was like new.

    @@streetsweepinms3714 you go into the manual, find which springs and needle you need, order them off osd or any site that sells oem mikuni parts, test pop-off to see if its within spec, and you're good to go.

    I think after 4 years by now you've probably rebuilt the engine because of low compression due to being bounced off the Rev limiter.

    I had a two stroke three wheeler back in 1986. The auto oil injection pump went out and cooked the engine. When the engine was cold it would start fine, but once the engine warmed up it would die and I could not start it again until it was absolutely cool. That engine sounds like it spins over a little to easy. Could be rings or rotary valve seals.

    Need some help here I have 1997 Sea-Doo speedster rotary. Put the boat in the water started fine engine one still wouldn't start but it would crank engine 2 started no problem. So after I shut the boat off and tried to start it again neither engine would start. It would crank but not start cranked it so much that I drained the battery took it out of water put it on trailer started fine. Don't know what the issue is here.

    andrey gerasenko i dont know what kind of engine you have but to adjust the rotary valve, take off the cover and take out the sparkplugs. Turn the engine over by hand until its at top dead center and on the case, there should be a mark where to set it.

    Go to Oreileys, cross reference the plug to a E3 Diamond fire plug and forget about the other junk brands. You won't need to buy plugs anymore. Running them for the last 15 years in our snowmobile, boats, jet skis, suburban, tow trucks, etc. They have stronger spark, produce more power, and don't foul. Have a nice day.

    Well to begin with idle is set way high maybe even high side is set to high.its supposed to drop back down quickly with the blip in throttle twist if set right.and most definantly do a compression test.because it should have started first shot of cosby sauce.snookie pa.and dont panic about shutting water immediatly off after its shut down the waters just there to cool jackets built into heads and exhaust ports.its more critical after said starting then shutdown.when on water ur still sucking water long after shutting down since impellers spinning for awhile.snookie pa.yeah check settings on carbs n compression.

    DONT RUN OUT OF WATER FOR 1 hour!you will destroy driveshaft bearing and jet pump as they will overheat! Run for a max of 1 minute with hose attachment.

    I have rebuild three of these engine. I'm also have 40 years of engineering. A engine needs spark, fuel. and compression (to move air /fuel mixer through the cylinders). to check spark remove spark plug from engine, then remove spark plug from wire. hook a screw driver to spark plug wire. place the screw driver ( metal part as near to ground ( the body of engine). have someone crank the engine check for spark ( try to keep the area viewing in dark so you can see if there spark. Depending on speed of starter the spark will be stronger the faster it turns. if spark is ok check fuel. To check fuel just pour about a small cap full of gas down the carb air inlet. It should start for 5 to 10 seconds then died. If you repeat this and it start then dies you have a fuel problem. compression if to low 125 130 or less will not start or only run on light loads. To check how to repair problem like this get me your engine size so I can sent a link to a manual. PLease note this is how you check all engines. Hope this helps

    @@mediadevelopmenttv2590 compression readings of 120 and below you need a rebuild, any difference more then 10 psi you will need a top end rebuild, running these skis without the stock flame arrestor, it will run terribly lean. That motor is just a run of the mill 720. Dude should have just swapped out the plugs with a fresh set of br8es or br8es-11 plugs .25mm gap. Running the ski so lean there's a good chance it could start to try and run away, if it does just pull the choke and it should die. Don't run these without the stock flame arrestor on. If you're having fuel system related issues, rebuilding with oem mikuni kits and testing pop off is a must, along with replacing the fuel strainer (dont run an inline in these skis) and fuel selector, which cannot be serviced.

    @@mediadevelopmenttv2590 HOPE YOU ARE STILL AROUND! my 951 GTX does not run, good spark, pour gas in carb and still no start (run) it turns over fast, compression is 140. Not sure why video shows cooling water hose to engine? I have a connection at the rear for cooling and water flows well. Next step is pour gas in cylinders if that does not work i will be completely lost. carbs were rebuilt, hoses checked, filter replaced. with compression and fuel, how can it not run?

    I've been starting it every day to try and work new fuel theough it. it seems to be running better. I'm going to put it in the lake this weekend to see how it goes.

    This does not look like a NGK BR8ES plug? Missing the center electrode? Should have a 1.5mm gap, and this plug has no way to set the gap, so either the electrode has fallen out or its a different none-suitable type of plug.

    Spark should be Blue! Not White or Red, That indicates bad Ignition Coil, Had the Same problem with my 1994 Yamaha WR lll GP, Changed the Ignition coil fixed the problem!

    i can guarantee it will not start when its on the water. sure it will start out of water but it will def be as compression issue with cylinders. been there done that. this was my first ski. hear mixed reviews on the 657x. mine took a dump on me 3 months after i got it

    i have a rotax 717 running with no mpem hooked to it at all. engine is not limited to 3500 rpm and you can still hook a tach to it with out the mpem you just have to understand how the tach works. they say there unstartable without the dess key or post but i can prove them wrong

    @@artilleryzaofficial9193 i have to find the wiring diagram i had. i have not done one in 2 years. but basically it has to do with a saftey kill wire hooked to the computer. and i little bit of rewiring to eliminate the mpem. the last one i did went into a flat bottom river boat. ill tell you what to search in a sec to see it its on the tube👍

    If the pop off pressure isn’t set on the carburetors un burnt fuel will mix with the exhaust carbon making it look like oil however it’s a flooding condition. The same thing as in this post, fuel shouldn’t blow out of the carburetors or the exhaust.

    Simply flooded. Turn off the fuel when not in use. Carbs may be rich. Pop off valve in carb might be to loose.

    The water is going in the wrong side of the motor. It’s supposed to go in carb side and circulate the motor so it doesn’t over heat.

    Not telling how to work on your own stuff, but I would NOT get used to using starting fluid. Especially on stuff like this with lots of aluminum parts. Just saying, you can make that engine dependent on needing it to start if not tear it up altogether.

    The reason that you don't use starting fluid is it washes out your oils in the cylinders and scores the pistons rings and cylinder bore , It doesn't look like he is looking at the post on here so everybody is wasting their time writing there are no replies .     man my 2002 Sea-Doo gti is kicking my ass am hopping you can help me a bit! Back story I purchased to skis about two weeks ago never owned any 0 knowledge might have done a few boo boos I those first days of owning them I scared the web and I can say I think Iliana know a lot more now but am still pulling my hair with this sky I can’t get it to start ! When I purchased I didn’t start so obviously it help me to knock the price down it had a low battery at that time and first mistake I use my jump box to starter and still nothing, then I got home and in the next few day I tried to start it with the jumper add starter fluid and it did start for minor periods. Second mistake I didn’t know at that time that I had to start sky then water. Then water off then sky! I was trying to start it with the hose on and then of I was all over the place. Then I learn the cycle and said oh oh 😕 then I decided to buy a new battery because I learn that jumping the unit could damage the computer . So battery came in installed it connected my hose water off cranked it and boom sky fired right up turned the water on and I felt the idle was having issues felt to low so I started reving it a bit it satayed on for about 40 seconds to a minute and all of asl sudden I hear this grinding noice and. Off it goes and I haven’t been able to start it since then I check compression is like 120 both I check spark I see spark I added fuel in the carb and nothing it just cranks and cranks I’m thinking I might damaged the computer with the jump box but it did start once with the new battery??     Those JUNK Plugs were fouled.... crank with throttle wide open, to get air in cylinder to clear the plug, till it starts then to idle. Also get a water valve for the end of your hose so you can shut it off right there, the 10 second delay with pressurized water supply could fill the stopped engine with water, expensive mistake....

    Yeah that's the thing today rev the engine up so high that you're but a blow it up and 2nd of all don't blame your brother because it sounds like it runs just fine I think you're pretty much at fault here

    Check compression on cylinders. Should be 150 psi... 130 ok... 120 time to rebuild

    really? tested mine last week (someone gave the ski to me), 120 on both. :p rebuilt carb last month - runs like this thing, just cranks and cranks- when I got it running it ran pretty well, smooth power all the way - starting shortly after killing was instant. When it sat for 2 mins - difficult again but not as bad as from cold. Does the oil pump have a return spring? Im thinking maybe oil is dripping down when carb at idle.. pump maybe hanging open..

    Well the oil pump has check valves in at oil nozzles in intake to prevent oil from flowing when engine is off. What your describing sounds like you got leaky needle and seats in carburetor. When you shutoff engine fuel keeps pouring in and flooding it making it hard to start. Butt you said you had someone rebuild carbs? Might have to check them out again and make sure they were done right and if they used genuine mikuni rebuild kits....

    hi thanks - I did the rebuild myself, popoff was perfect at 29psi (used original spring), i did a leak down test per the manual, it held 4 psi for a few minutes. fuel tank etc also help pressure.. i did put in a new needle as well - is there a way t verify the pump is pumping correctly and not leaking? ie would it constantly deliver fuel back thru the return line? yes plugs are wet with fuel when i take em out - when doing the pressure test i noticed small bubbles leaking past the housing (on the outside of the plastic carb gasket, not the fuel side) - like the plate was not straight so i dabbed a very light skin of permatex ultra and it was sealed up next morning.. mix screws are ate 1 turn idle and close on high speed - thanks for the tips.

    Put the air box on it... It will run better with air box on. Stop revving it like that your gonna blow up the engine! That engine is bouncing off the rev limiter. That the sound your hearing. You need to download the manual for this ski and read it.

    i have the same problem but mine is not getting any fuel when i spray starting fluid in it, it starts until it burns the starting fluid than stops any idea? i did clean the fuel hoses but never looked at the fuel pump, let me know what you guys think of it. Thanks in advance!

    @@lindiboy1982 you have an air leak, check your fuel strainer and selector valve for any leaks, they probably need to be replaced given with age. since you removed carbs, doesnt seem like you installed any new base gaskets? another source for an air leak, when you clean them, you should order rebuild kits given that they are 20+ years old.

    You're right. I have to hold the throttle all the way open to start it I'll install the air box and see if choking it helps.
