Back in the days when Villeneuve was one of the best racecar pilot in the world. Finished 2nd in the F1 world championship the following year and took the first place as the F1 world champion in 1997... As a French Canadian, let me say those were proud moments...

As an American motorsports fan I find it fitting that Jacques won the 500 - especially after Gilles Villeneuve expressed interest in competing at Indianapolis during an interview with the American magazine _'On Track'_ conducted sometime before Imola 1982.... ... For me & other Gilles Villeneuve fans, this 500 (and the WDC) Jacques claimed, answered those questions _"What if...."_ (had Gilles lived longer...

Every year there are drivers who show up without a ride and cars without drivers and magic happens. This is a special place and a special race that still, no matter what, creates a warm feeling in the hearts of young race fans. The IMS is the greatest track in the world and the 500 is still the one of the most prestigious races in the world.

Wooow those were the glorious years for Jacques. Winning IndyCar Series in 95, and the Indy 500 too, then in 96 a fantastic 2nd place as a rookie in the F1, and the next year he won the world championship. He's as talented as his father was.He is still one of my favourite drivers.

I think this was the last truly huge Indy 500, but perhaps the first one just past the peak of the series' strength. Nigel Mansell had just left - whiner or not, his skills and credibility as incoming F1 World champion were undeniable - and the senior Andretti/Fittipaldi were finally beginning to show the signs of father time - in fact, Mario had already retired by this point. Losing Villenueve was a biggie. From '96-2000, CART was still very exciting, but by then the 500 was off the schedule.

As harsh a call as it is, the rules are rules, Scott Goodyear knew that you weren't allowed to overtake the pace car until it has pulled off the track to pit road. On the other hand. out of the two Canadians, i'm glad Jacques won it. 1. because he came back from two laps down and deserved it, and 2. he came over to the F1 scene and stuck to Michael Schumacher, again within two years of appearing on scene :D :D

Not the first time a pace car screwup affected the race. In the early 60s, numerous drivers damaged their clutches by having to run slow on the pace lap before the race because the pace car was going too slow. After several complaints, the pace car's speed was increased.

It's pretty interesting... Goodyear ran all 500 miles and was the first to finish, but only got scored for 487.5 miles. Villenueve officially won, running all 500 miles, but actually ran 505 miles. Man, USAC scoring is always a mess. Thank god for updates in computer scoring.

No one ran over 500 miles. Villeneuve was 2 laps down earlier in the race, meaning he was 5 miles back from the leader. He would have done 495 miles if he stayed 2 laps down. He made up those 5 miles (2 laps) and was the first to finish 500 miles officially.

After coming so close in 1992, Goodyear probably just got over anxious when the pace car came in and jumped it. Sad that he lost the 500 on such a silly mistake. But Jacques drove an amazing race that day nonetheless, winning from two laps down.

I was a huge indy 500 spectator for 10 years BEFORE they changed the apron. I never saw a wreck cause by a car exiting the pits in those 10 years. I just LOOKED scary but the stats show it was perfectly safe and it made for more interesting racing since you used to be able to pass on the outside sometimes.

Unser has no room to talk about "the rules". He used to take advantage of the "Electro-Pacer" system that was used during caution periods. He would come into the pits, take a splash of fuel, and then leave. He would gain spots because he could go as fast as he wanted going into and out of the pits. The "Electro-Pacer" system was used in the 70s. It consisted of electronic signs around the track at pre-determined points. The signs would flash numbers on the signs at a set rate (I think its went to from 0 to 4). When a yellow flag came out, the signs would light up and the drivers would need to note what number was on the sign. They then needed to make sure they saw the same number on each sign after that as they passed. If the number was smaller, it meant they were going to fast. Unser took advantage of this (and admitted as much during an interview) by making pit stops since he could go fast into and out of the pits. It was basically a 1970s version of F1 Virtual Safety Car.

By 2005, yearly rumors of reunification were of a constant. In 2006 hopes were at their highest, but with the announcement of ChampCar's DP01 for the 2007 season, the hopes for unification were at a hault. In 2007, neither series managed to average 20 cars on the grid and finally in February in 2008, the unification was announced. This is the story in the short version. Yes, this is the short version.

CART continued to see success with it's series until about 1998 when television ratings began to decline with NASCAR's rise, and the IRL continued to expand but with lack lusture crowds and the same problem as CART with mediocre ratings. In 2001, both sides were in their prime as both put an average of 25 cars on the grid for each of their races. As the IRL continued to grow, CART's flagship owners, Penske, Ganassi, and Andretti bolted for the IRL in 2003.

In 1978, Dan Gurney and several others formed Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). CART was formed after several owners were upset at the way the United States Auto Club had been running IndyCar racing. CART went on to create a great series with a mix of ovals, road courses, and street courses. Their marque event was the Indianapolis 500, which was recognized still as a USAC event. There was always an uneasy truse between CART and USAC and in 1994...

Also in 2003, CART began seeing financial trouble and filed for bankrupcy and went to bankrupcy court. Tony George in the first attempt to unify the sport, tried to buy CART's assets. However, the assets were awarded to Kevin Kalhoven, Paul Gentilozzi and Gerry Forsite. These three renamed CART, ChampCar in 2004 and changed the sports focus from a diverse schedule, to a series full of road and street courses resembling that of a festival atmosphere.

My first Indy was 1961 when Sir Jack Brabham ran the first rear engined car. Having grown up in Indy and been to the track many times, open wheeled racing is done. Even with the consolidation of Cart and IRL, open wheeled racing has lost it's momentum and will never recover. Stock car racing stepped into the void...and so it goes.

Before they re-merged I payed more attention to ChampCar/CART rather than IRL. But since IZOD I beleive things are a bit better again. I might be going to Edmonton in the next couple of weeks here.

People still say that USAC reversed Villeneuve’s 2-lap penalty. But they did not. Jacques earned that victory by driving the wheels off his Reynard/Ford. The very moment I saw Scott Goodyear passed the pace car before the drop of the green flag, I knew right then and there that he was going to get penalized. The light might have flipped to green. But anybody with some sense knows that the pace car must also be off the track before you can go full throttle. If I remember right, CART tried to adopt NASCAR’s way the next season - you can’t start racing until you actually cross the start/finish line to take the green flag.

Racermac, I enjoyed reading your CART/IRL history and I agree. But what I feel really damaged the popularity of Indy racing was the fact that between 1992-'94 it had so many legends retire. It had Rick Mears, Al Unser Sr., A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Tom Sneva and Gordon Johncock, guys that had been there for decades leave. It didn't change MY intensity, but Greg Ray, Billy Boat, etc. couldn't automatically take their place. If NASCAR had 5 Richard Pettys retire the same thing would have occured.

What's funny is that nowadays that start would not mattered, as the pace car pulls off in turn 3 on restarts...and since Brian Barnhart has been chief steward the lead car has been allowed to gun it past a certain point. Goodyear would have won had it been 2000+....I am sorry, but pace car or not, if the green lights around the track are on, then punch it! That said, I am glad the new slower restart speed is in place. I am tired of seeing the leader jump out on the field before the restart

I remember this race as the 1000hp man tantrum by Goodyear refusing to serve his penalty. What a baby.

Waiving off the restart would have been the logical thing to do and would have been the case today. And the fact that the pace car now a days pulls off one lap prior solves the problem entirely

They would waved off the restart only if they were not on the right order or if the leader jumped the restart. The pace car driver was horrible that day but the pace car was way ahead of Goodyear . Pace car driver slowed down too much but still he had to slow down to realign the field nose to tail on turn 4 to be able to move aside on the stretch on pit road for green flag. Goodyear played it like they do it now, with no pacecar on track at the restart lap , they can hit the breaks on turn 4 and accelerate when they want.

That really sucks for Goodyear, especially because it was the pace car that wasn't going fast enough.
