@@theshackkkhe wasn't the refined thought-provoking Dave that we know...BUT he was still better than 90% of comics even this early... because Dave is on a different level. He still stood out as thought provoking (subtly). It's like he had his stage presence down from day one (his mom was supportive and brilliant enough to make sure he got into an A School of the Arts in HS)... And his natural humor just happened to come off like a seasoned performer already. That's why he was getting all of this attention as a young comic because he was well practiced and well taught.

Dude I remember A couple years ago when I had that same Realization. I'm 36 now and my very 1st stand up special I saw was Martin Lawrence's you so crazy and since then stand up comedy has always been my favorite thing. And even though whenever rogan has a comedian on his Podcast they explain the purpose of a tour and And each set they do is an opportunity to rearrange the order of how you do a bit to see what works best, I didn't truly understand until I heard the Birth of a concept Years after I had already heard The bit perfected and performed. Patrice oneill is my favorite of all time, and being that there are Hundreds of hours of not Just the things he says to make you laugh but what I consider his consider his philosophy of life posted all over KZread. And of course the opium Anthony show is the number one source of his Content. I remember listening to an episode where he Save the punchline to one of his bits from elephant in the room and I was like holy shit this is where the idea began and eventually it became what it was on that special. And then I got to appreciate the same Life cycle of a joke when When bilber was on tour for his paper tiger special. I decided Ima go to one of the very 1st Dates, then I'll go to one of the last ones when he comes back into town, and then watch the final product on Netflix. It truly gave me a much broader perspective of how much Work they actually go through to be the best of the best. Yeah sorry for all the paragraphs but this is like the 1st time I actually get to Share this experience I had that somebody else will actually understand

He knows his crowds - even then he was coding. This is a white LA crowd with kids and he became David Chapelle; the timing, pacing and vernacular changed for same jokes we've seen on Killin' Them Softly. For a guy so atuned to the reception to his racial humour you can see why his show was so good and why he bounced when he did.

Wow, as you traverse his history, you find that he has made a career repeating the same jokes for about 10 years of it. I guess all comedians do that. Ralphie May did it so much that his jokes were memorized and repeated verbatim at every show, and you could tell by the expression in his face that he just wanted to get through it.

I don't mind pacing. I do mind not getting unexpected punch lines & ethnic shock humor.
I love Dave, but please go back and watch Richard Pryor 'Live and Smokin' his 1st concert film and try and tell yourself you don't see the different level of talent. Pryor showed fearlessness in 1971 Dave (rounded into) fearlessness in the 2000's....
