1995 Chrysler Atlantic - Chrysler's Outrageous Version of a Bugatti (That Never Made It)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Taking a look at the story of the interesting Chrysler Atlantic concept car from 1995. This was a flagship luxury car with a with a retro coupe-like body and a 4.0L straight-eight engine that was built from two mashed up Dodge Neon 2.0L four-cylinders. It was inspired by 1930s French coupes, specifically the 1934-1940 Bugatti Type 57, which also had at Atlantic model. This was stylish, retro, and powerful, and drew tons of attention from crowds at the auto show circuit. Unfortunately, Chrysler didn't pull the trigger on this one, and they decided to cancel it. That leaves many to wonder, 'What If'?

They're just showing off and never really intend to. The proof is that they just somehow didn't think of the legally required bumpers and then used that as an excuse not to produce them. They aren't that stupid. Take a look at the Talbot Lago at 2:32 that was a partial inspiration and had a very functional bumper, so don't tell us that it couldn't be done with this sort of coupe.

I saw the Atlantic at the 1995 Pebble Beach Concours d'Élégance. I will never forget how stunningly beautiful this concept car was. A few feet away, there was also a Bugatti EB112. The Atlantic looked much more like a Bugatti than the EB112, which I found hilarious in its own way. I was able to talk to Bob Lutz, congratulated him on that concept masterpiece and asked him when it would go to production. He said "probably not". I told him, well Mr Lutz, you just lost a client. I wanted to buy it so bad. To this say, I think it is one of the greatest concept cars ever.

The Chrysler Atlantic always looked like something that SHOULD have been made, but i can understand WHY it has not been made as it simply did not really have any reasonable 'clientele' It probably would have ended up looking vastly different due to regulations regarding crash impact safety, it would have been unpractical in certain areas (front view, cleaning, drag, etc) and would have looked a lot 'toned down', and likely would end up weighing too much and having too little power from an underpowered engine. It certainly would have become a great 'hot rod' car as i'm sure people would have spooned in big V8s. It's one of the few cars that should have been built though. It REALLY looked SO GOOD. It reminds me a lot of Jaguars from the 50s too. Instead, we had the Chrysler Crossfire. Not actually a ugly car, but it's 'just' a rebodied Mercedes roadster.

I think this is a stunning car. Retro yes, but gorgeous. The interior looks like it was not as interesting at the time, but now it too would be 90s Retro and cool because of that. As for the engine. One Neon engine is a horrible thing. Two Neon engines is completely horrific. Besides that, as a Chrysler it would have been unreliable. Of course this was only ever going to be a concept car. Imagine how expensive it would have been to actually produce. Plus the built-in unreliability. Having said that. I do think Chrysler always came up with the best concept cars out of the big three. I will always great fully thank Chrysler for giving us the Airflow in 1934. Such a shame that all their vehicles today are such rubbish.
