In this video: THIS IS JUST AN EXPERIMENT. I can see the comments already. I've had this 1995 Cannondale M900 tucked away for a couple of years now. I've seen a few people riding single speed and after a bit of community research I thought I'd give it a go. Yes, the geometry is all screwed up now but we'll see how it performs!

    I've done a similar project myself with a 1995 GT Karakoram CroMoly frame about 2 years ago. SS conversion with modern components and an upgraded fork. NOS XTR V-brakes. I love it! I believe I used an 18 x 36 set up, if I'm not mistaken...the result is awesome! Great vid!

    I find that putting on a little bit longer stem on the vintage bikes makes them handle better even with a slacker front end and a wider bar. You might try an 80mm or something and see if that helps.

    Sweet frame! I have bought a Cannondale Lefty as a long term rebuilder/mod bike, it’s currently yellow and I’m not a fan of yellow bikes (although I do have an original Speedwell Flash 500 which is yellow-ish, and I love it) but if I’m doing a long term build I’ll probably change colours, possibly a 2 tone fluro scheme. I just realised that it will be the first bike I’ve ever owned with disc brakes! What I am super excited about building is an old-ish school Gary Fisher with roks shox front forks, it would have been way over my budget when it was new, so I’m really happy to have one, it’ll be hours of fun in our wet muddy winter tracks. So many builds so little money and time haha. Yours is great too, if you’re having fun that’s all that matters, it’s better to have them out there riding than into a scrap bin!

  • @MonkeyShred

    How about a 1990ish Fisher AL1 with an original Rockshox RS1...? Coming in a few weeks ;) I'm intrigued by the lefty fork. I was thinking of one for this build but they're fairly expensive!

    @@MonkeyShred sweet! I’d never heard of Gary Fisher bikes until I saw one on eBay and was doing some research. I missed out on that one, but my regular seller was just stripping one down so I bought that, although mine is a shock frame. I’m pretty happy as then I’ll have a full suspension, and a hard tail when both the mountain bikes are done. I forget what I paid for my forks, it wasn’t a huge amount, but I had to buy the wheel set also, as the lefty uses a special hub. Can’t wait to see your Fisher! I just picked up 3 Speedwells so one at a time I’ll make up a list of jobs and parts needed, but I’m also playing around with a ladies speedwell I bought for parts on my patina bike, and looking to convert it into a men’s bike and build a velo type bike. Not too sure yet but I’m pretty sure I will.

    @@MonkeyShred I did a shimano 1x10 conversion on the exact same bike last year. I don't love it: the jumps between gears are very large, the highest gear is quite slow, chainline seems bad in the high gears. I got my m900 with an 80 or 100mm travel fork - I swapped the fork to a functioning dart 3 since but I don't love how the steering feels. I'm about to throw a rigid fork on it, and I'm going to change the drivetrain to something else when it breaks, probably a 2x if I can make it work or a 3x if I can't. 1x seems to make the most sense for actual mountain biking, which is not something I do much.

    I didn't see this on your Instagram, but it seems like your bottom bracket his way too high, seems like it's only 0.5-1cm under the horizontal line between the two wheel axis, the fork seems to throw the bike way back. I wanted to say a negative 7° or even 17° degrees 80-100mm stem and a 0 offset seatpost would make this a really nice XC bike but the fork has to be lowered. Idk if you can open it and try to see if you can put it on the 80mm setup cause it looks like it's on 100mm, would help a little but the bottom bracket would still be a bit high ! Maybe try a 24" fork with the 26" wheel or put a 24" wheel on the Pace fork :')

    I run single speed on my daily commuter bike simply because I always end up breaking deraileurs and I also find It just more rewarding, plus I have put it together for around £60 all in, bike was bought from fb market place for £45, broken, used a old cranks I could take rings iff used the middle ring and rigged it up to the second from bottom gear on back wheel and just has the right chain tension luckily, and then stuck on some gt mtb handle bars I had 2012 Carrera zelos

  • @thesausage351
    @thesausage3513 жыл бұрын

    I’m a bit nervous I might have to run a tensioner on the old bike I’m building, it’s a derailleur frame dropouts and I’ve gone back to a coaster, so I’ll try and get it tight toward the front of the dropouts and just let the wheel go back and tension it, but I’ll have to see what happens, so fingers crossed cause a tensioner would immediately lose the vintage look.
