1995 - 2002 GM Truck Tech2 ABS Brake Automated Bleed & Pressure Bleed (Chevy & GMC)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we will go over the GM shop manual procedure for pressure bleeding the brake system, and the procedure for using the Tech2 scan tool (clone actually) to do an automated bleed of the 4WAL (4 wheel anti-lock) Kelsey Hayes ABS brake system used on mid to late 90s GM trucks in the 95 96 97 98 99 2000 2001 and 2002 model years. The Kelsey-Hayes ABS Electro-Hydraulic Control Unit (EHCU) model EBC310 is located under the hood on the drivers side. It consists of the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) and BPMV (Brake Pressure Modulator Valve) assembly, along with the proportioning valve unit. This procedure bleeds air out of the BPMV using the Tech2.
I am using the Motive Products Power Bleeder with their 1105 rectangular adapter for this application. While the vehicles shown are a 1999 and 1998 6.5L diesel and 5.7L gasoline truck respectively, the procedure applies to any vehicle with ABS supported by the GM Tech2 scan tool. The visuals shown will be most similar to other GM trucks either Chevrolet, Holden, GMC, or Cadillac.
Remember when you are all done, after you remove the Motive Power Bleeder adapter from your brake reservoir, you need to put the brake fluid level back to normal. I use a turkey baster to suck out the excess fluid before putting the cover back on, forgot to show this.

    Rewatching this outstanding KZread for the millionth time and now in possession of the Tech 2 Clone, I noticed you didn't do something I always do when bleeding. I "turkey baster" the MC dry as I can, wipe the insides with a perfectly clean towel and then fill with new brake fluid. Why pump old stuff through? Also, for me anyway, it helps to see the clean stuff coming through so I know I am getting close to being all flushed out of old bad stuff. Just a recommendation that has worked for me for the past 45 years (well, except on my Model A as it has mechanical brakes).

    From watching your videos, I am doing (have ordered all the parts): Timken bearings/hubs, calipers, lines, rotors, pads, upper and Lower Ball Joints, upper A-Arm Bushings. My ABS light has been on for 100K miles. I am hoping the sensors that come with the Timken hubs will fix that. My truck has "Hydroboost". I plan to pressure bleed (old school) with the tool you recommended. I followed your link and did not see your Scan Tool (the same one you have). Do I really need to do that?? All cars/trucks are old school bled by the wheel furthest from the Master Cylinder first and then working towards the MC. If I was to do an old school pressure bleed as you have, would it be crazy expensive to have GMC/Chevy do the "Auto Bleed" with the tool? My truck is 1996 GMC, K2500 Suburban, 7.4 Liter Gas, 8600 GVW. Thank you for another outstanding KZread. We all learn from you.

    This procedure is only for bleeding the ABS module itself (the Kelsey-Hayes 4WAL unit). It doesn't bleed the lines, disc calipers, or the rear drum wheel cylinders. Those all have to be done manually. In the video I show how to do that using the Motiv pressure bleeding tool.

    Sir I'm about to try this procedure tonight. I have a 97' c3500 crew cab dually with 6.5 turbo diesel engine. 4l80e tranny... Had brake problems ever since letting a idiot work on my truck a few years ago. He brokE rear driver side brake line. All fluid lost. Also changed master cylinder. (Obviously we replaced broke brake line) changed all calipers and wheel cylinders pads ,shoes etc. But ever since then could never get good pedal like before he messed with it and brakes seems to drag intermittently.. some times they do, sometimes they don't. Recently bottom lead pin fell out of ABS box. I got a used box from junkyard and installed today. Never knew we had to do this procedure. any further advice? THANK YOU so much Update: hooked up scanning tonight. Performed Auto bleed sequence. Somehow the pin in the lower bleeder that faces the engine blew out of this box also just like the other one. This is the design that has a bleeder on top one on bottom and two directly under the brake lines. The one on bottom I assume is for the rear brakes but not positive on that

    For the years with the automated bleed procedures, you are not supposed to manually manipulate the bleeder orifices on the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV), which is part of the 4WAL ABS module. This is all done electronically for your 1997 model. I can't say I've ever heard of, or even read of, these to be _popping_ out during the Tech2 procedure. This sounds like just having bad luck with two defective BPMVs in a row. There is some more technical info about this module in this other vid I did kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2Slt6Zvk8Wxfqw.html

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    No, there's no air at all inside the pressure bottle hose to the master cylinder. As long as you keep the bottle topped off with brake fluid you'll be fine. This type of tool actually fills the master cylinder to the brim of the adapter you mount on top, forcing all the air out before you begin. ;-)

    You definitely do not do this on a dry master cylinder; you have to have fluid already topped off in there first. But the way the Motiv adapter is designed the air will be displaced by the fluid under pressure.

    I have not personally made such a change in my vehicles or those I've worked on so I can't answer this with clarity for you. The Tech2 does have a Tire Size Calibration under the ABS area, that I can see. In fact I see someone did a video on where the menu in the Tech2 for this is (but that video has no sound) you might search "Tech2 tire size" and find it. I've actually never seen a Tech2 setting to change this attribute for the PCM/ECU though but that could just mean it's not available on the particular vehicles I've worked on.

    The Tech2 is going to _auto_ bleed out the ABS module primarily, for 1996 and later type vehicles via the OBDII interface. Some GM vehicles, like I showed, will also assist in manually bleeding the calipers/wheel cylinders but you have to also have a power bleeder unit connected to the master cylinder for that part to be useful. If you don't have ABS, the Tech2 is not going to be needed. But the power bleeder can be a real time saver.

    This isn't needed for bleeding the brakes themselves, but the ABS module only. You do need a scan tool (others besides the Tech2 support this function) to bleed the module. Some folks might suggest some more unsafe routes but I won't recommend those here.

    The Tech2 procedure is only for the ABS unit internally. Won't do anything for the master cylinder, or anything out to the wheels. But is a necessary step to get air out of the Kelsey-Hayes 4WAL ABS design.

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've been using the Tech2 clone for about five years now, never have come across a problem. If you get the higher end/most expensive copy they are nearly identical to the Bosch one. You absolutely can use the Tech2 on your 96, there's a search link in the description of this video. On a 96, that would be a Kelsey-Hayes EBC310 model ABS. The two black rubber caps that face towards the firewall are ports are from the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) assembly. The ones on the sides, facing each fender, are part of the combination valve assembly. If the side ones are leaking, then the combo valve needs to be replaced (hard to do though as discontinued years ago). If the firewall facing ports are leaking, then the BPMV needs replacing (but again hard to do since discontinued years ago). There are no rebuilders for the 310 type ABS, and no source other than GM/ACDelco originally for these parts. So best bet is a salvage yard swap. I have a vid on the EBC310 4WAL tear down coming up later this month. The hard copy service manuals for such an old vehicle are long out of print, bu you can often find them used on eBay.

  • @AnthonyWrenn

    @AnthonyWrenn

    Thanks for there very quick reply! It’s one of the 2 facing the cab. Does pressure build up behind those caps to blow them off? I am hoping just replacing the cap will stop the slow leak….if it’s only coming from that. I’ll take a look for the scan tool using that link. Do the clones come with instructions? When using the pressure bleeder setup you have is it like gravity bleeding where you leave the line on the wheel open till the bubbles stop? Or should I press the brake sometimes/or just before opening that bleed valve?

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    2 жыл бұрын

    There's no pressure that would _normally_ occur at those ports. The rubber covers are just dust boots, they will not stop a leak of any significance. If the dust boot is missing, it's usually just because it rotted off or was accidentally bumped off. Even the genuine Tech2 does not come with much in the way of instruction. These are GM dealership grade tools, all of the _usage_ information is contained within the service bulletins and manuals the GM techs would reference. When using a Motiv Power Bleeder you don't touch the pedal, you just bleed each wheel cylinder/caliper as required and the pressure does the work for you. It's like any other bleed procedure, only that you don't need a helper and can work outside the vehicle entirely. Open the bleeder valve, watch that the air bubbles are cleared, move onto the next valve. You just need to not let the fluid run out of the power bleeder or you'll pull air and be starting over. The ABS units BPMV has to be bled using a Tech2 scan tool though.

    We cover two GM service manual procedures in this video. The auto bleed is a Tech2 scan tool function for the model years covered in the video title only. For these OBS C/K trucks it applies only to the ABS brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) and has nothing to do with wheel cylinder or caliper bleeding. Then we show how to use a Motive power bleeder to purge air from the brake lines going to both the calipers (front) and wheel cylinders (rear). The video shows where and when you open bleed valves on this more conventional step.

It would also be part of the ACDelco Tech2Win emulator that you can use with a J2534 diagnostic interface (such as the GM MDI). It may also be in an aftermarket bi-directional tool (higher end of the line) from Launch, Thinkcar, or Autel.

    So this procedure only applies to 1996-2002 then since 1995 is obd1, correct?

    The 1995 has the Kelsey-Hayes EBC310 ABS but yeah without OBDII I believe you would need to do this with a Tech I or an OBD I adapter on the Tech 2. I personally haven't tried doing a 95 with this procedure yet.

    @@DrShock I've got a 95 in the shop right now. This is about the only thing we haven't tried. I was under the understanding that the plunger on the top side of the ABS unit should remove air in the unit. Replaced all the lines on the truck, rear drums/cylinders and master cylinder. just can't get these things to harden up.

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    You can if it has OBD2 for the Tech2 to communicate with it. 1995 was a transition year for OBD2, most vehicles will still have OBD1. The Tech2 will come with both an OBD1 and OBD2 adapter, but as best I recall the automated bleed was an OBD2 feature only.

    Well if this helps, it has a kelsey hayes 4wal system that I believe air got in it when I upgraded the master cylinder and rear brakes to disc an I know a tech 1a can perform an auto bleed on this system but just trying to find out if the tech 2 could.

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    It does. I don't have access to a 1995 truck to verify it, but if a Tech 1A tool could do it on a 1995 truck then a Tech2 should as well as it's a super set of the older tools functionality. You may have to attach the OBDI adapter to the Tech2 if your 95 doesn't have the OBDII type diagnostic port though. I have used a Tech2 with 1995 trucks in the past using the OBDI adapter, just not for this specific ABS function.

    Have you tried this on a 1995 model year, my tech 2 doesn’t have the abs automated bleed as a option that I can find up until the year 1998

  • @DrShock

    I have not personally tried it on that year, but the 4WAL ABS computer that the feature applies to was listed as an option for that year so I included it. Your ABS would need to be the Kelsey-Hayes made 4WAL type, not the RWAL type. You can tell under the hood, the ABS unit would say Kelsey-Hayes right on top. Also 1995 probably doesn't have the full ODBII spec implemented at the ADLC you are plugging the Tech2 into as that didn't start until 1996, though I'm not sure that would effect what you see in the menu options.

    I do have the Kelsey-Hayes system I figured it might have something to do with it not being obd 2 but even if I try for a 1996 or 97 it doesn’t show as an option, I’ve seen where multiple people are using the tech 2 for the abs bleed procedure on the obd1 was just trying to figure out if I was doing something wrong.

    It would not be the first time I've seen menu options move or disappear between years of the same vehicle. Check this list of menu paths from GM, and search for "Automated Bleed". Perhaps for 95 it's under a different menu, if so please comment back so we all know. gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/GM_Tech2_Paths.pdf

    Automated Bleed - Chassis > 4WAL 3 Sensor > Special Functions My menu is Function - Chassis > 4WAL 3 Sensor > Special Functions. The automated bleed was not listed in any of my menus or submenus however I did try something listed under 4wal 3 sensor called function This does run my abs system but I believe it runs it faster than what the automated bleed runs so I don’t know if I will have the same results. My guess is that this is just to run the abs to make sure everything is working as it should. Cycles the abs 5 times vs the 6 it does with the automated bleed. Thanks for your help

    No need for the procedure on these OBS trucks, as I mentioned for cars and newer vehicles the scan tool will probably have you open them up as instructed. However if you're going to do a power bleed anyway, I'd also do the automated bleed first.

    The Kelsey-Hayes 4WAL ABS brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) module is self bleeding for these particular years, when actuated by the GM Tech2 scan tool. It may drip out some brake fluid as well when these small solenoid type valves open up on the sides to purge air during this procedure. This procedure doesn't do anything for air trapped in disc brake calipers or drum brake wheel cylinders. Those you bleed in the conventional fashion, but using a pressure bleeder like the Motive unit can save time.

    Hi buddy, I have an issue with a K1500 4WAL Kelsey Hayes, I changed everything > wheel cylinder/ brake line / brake hose / master cylinder / calipers / brake boosters. I tried to bleed the ABS system with a Tech2, I had the trouble code "Front right speed sensor circuit open" who got me unable to "Automated Bleed" the circuit, do you any advice? (I changed the front speed sensor too)

  • @DrShock

    @DrShock

    3 жыл бұрын

    That DTC code implies the right (passenger side with left being drivers side) front sensor harness was damaged during the maintenance work you've described. After replacing the sensor harness (part of the sensor if you used an ACDelco replacement) you should be able to clear the code with the Tech2 and repeat the brake bleed. If not, then the harness damage is most likely not the sensor part but within the frame mounted one it connects into. This doesn't necessarily have to have happened during the brake maintenance, it could be a worn wiring insulation that you just disturbed that was there all along.

    With scan tools it will be easy. But i dont have one. At the moment, the way I know without scan tools is to bleed the brakes, brake several times until the abs are triggered on the sand or grass and bleed the brakes again.
