I would put the 90's Cowboys up against anyone. The 70's had a few dynasty type teams in one decade, with the Steelers, Cowboys, Dolphins, Raiders and yes, even the Vikings, who never won a title, but damn, they were awesome in the 70's too!! What an era, the 90's Cowboys fit right in with that bunch. It was so fun watching the balance of those great Cowboy teams of the 90's, they could beat you by smashmouth and running it down your throat or, if you totally stacked it against the run, they could unleash the Playmaker, Troy, Harper, Kevin WIlliams, Novacek and others along the way!!

TXraindear none of his linemen were probowlers before emmitt. Also, barry had two really good linemen for most of his career. Lions weren’t a BAD team. They got into playoffs many times but obviously lions were not good enough for any nfc powerhouses. Cowboys definitely had a great line, no one doubts that, but emmitt really helped make that line look better due to his ability to see and read the defense and hit the holes quickly and effectively. Lions liked to run spread which gives barry more room to improvise and do his thing. So, to answer the question, yes, i think barry runs for more if he plays for the cowboys. No idea how much, I don’t like hypotheticals, but I think to some degree. You have to bear in mind that cowboys ran I formation often where emmitt had a fb blocking for him and two te’s. In 1997’s first two games lions ran it and barry runs for 50 yeards total only. They switch back to spread and barry runs for that 2k. However, with cowboys line, barry wouldnt be met by the defense in the backfield as much so that’s a factor too. Lions went 8-8 and 9-7 in the 99 and 00, hardly a dip. Always the same shit. Two different runners. Appreciate both. Reliability, consistency + longetivity vs super entertaining, highlight machine, always prone to break a big play. Same comparison with rice and moss.

You saw the limitations of the old-school Run & Shoot offense that Atlanta ran. When it worked it was a thing of beauty, such as the George TD pass to Metcalf or the second drive to a FG. But it was ineffective in the red zone as the field got smaller, (run & shoot teams kicked a lot of short field goals) and eventually, with just 5 offensive linemen, NFL defenses would start to get pressure on the QB and shut it down. Could be fun to watch but ultimately not a successful strategy against NFL defenses.

Ever since about ‘95 the only thing Dallas has lacked, the only thing that kept them from being a legitimate super bowl threat, deep playoff team is their defense. They’ve had a great offense most of every year, just a garbage defense and defense is what wins you championships. Maybe Jerry realized that again here in 2021

But in the ensuing few years after this final title in '95, it was the Cowboys' offense that actually held them back. The defense was stellar in '96, but the offense struggled to score touchdowns in the red zone. Then the '97 season turned into a disaster. Chan Gailey righted the ship to some degree in '98, but the inexplicable blowout home playoff loss to the Cardinals ruined much of the goodwill. 1999 started well, but Irvin's injury basically derailed any hope that that team had for sustained winning.

@@tkramer62283Cowboys had a good 4 year run on other teams foolishness. The ridiculously wacky Minnesota trade and the 49ers trading Charles Haley and then two years later not even offering Deion Sanders a contract. Troy Aikman wasn’t much of a big time QB, but a QB with great all-pro players around him. Troy couldn’t carry a team and it showed after 1995. Jimmy Johnson was really overrated and a product of all that draft capital that landed the greatest RB of all-time (Emmitt Smith) who literally “carried” that team to those Super Bowls. When Jimmy Johnson went to the Miami Dolphins, he got his ass handed to him. Jimmy’s final game was a 62-7 humble pie ass kicking. The Cowboys have been irrelevant since 1996. Let’s be real here, those other teams don’t make those idiotic decisions, the Cowboys are literally stuck on two championships from the 70s. That’s exactly why Cowboys fans run to these old videos, cuz since 1996 there isn’t jack-shit to talk about.

In a few of these highlights, that was the case. Overall though, Emmitt did it all. He got the tough inside yards and could make linebackers miss at the second level. He got hit plenty of times and was nicked up for portions of several seasons, but was as durable and tough as anyone in the league.
