1994 Miata Engine in 1966 Datsun Roadster

I accidentally started my swapped engine today, so I guess it works. The engine is a 1.8L from a 1994 Mazda Miata. The vehicle is a 1966 Datsun Roadster. See the build, with detailed how-to and templates at: www.orange-claw-hammer.com/car...

The SR20 is a great swap, but involves frame modification. I like that the Miata swap is essentially a drop-in, with no cuts to the car, completely reversible in about an hour.

Once I get the engine harness properly wrapped and back in the car, I will post some on-street videos. It can definitely lay rubber.

That's a great swap! The Mazda EFI looks really tough hehe. I have my dads old 1968 (titled in 69) 1600 SPL311-20009. I had the evil idea of putting a 3 rotor RX7 motor in it. I had a RX3 wagon years ago and loved that engine. I did extensive work on it and got to know the tricks of the rotary. - - Lately I've been looking into making it electric. With and on-board genny I could go places. lol - I remember a TV spot where a fella had a Perkins diesel gen-set on an electric car and got 200 MPG!

I had a custom driveshaft made that had the Miata splines at one end and the Datsun bolt pad at the other. It was inexpensive and better balanced than stock. I did all the fabrication with a hacksaw and a drill press. Check out my website (listed in the info section) for a complete how-to.

The SR20DE(T) is a great engine for the Roadster, but I'd need to cut the car to put one in, and I didn't want to do that. Perhaps Miatas suck, but the Miata drivetrain is extremely far from sucking.

@jareddickey87 - Thanks for the compliment! The only web presence I have for the build is my personal site, which is basically a how-to for doing this swap. KZread won't let me put the address in a comment, but you can find it above in the description if you haven't already.

@Furryloveshentai - If I were to do this again, I'd use the 1.6L engine. The swap would have been so much cheaper and easier (the 1.6L cars are all over auto salvage yards; the 1.8L cars are not) and then I'd totally turbo it, just for fun.

@LonewolfSaichi - I have no idea. If you want to PM me, I can send you a dimensioned massing model of the 1.8L BP engine that I used.

the link you give is now broken. i have a datsun 1600 and evaluating the possibility of putting in a miata motor so i would be very interested in seeing documentation of your swap if it is still available. thanks!

Hello, I am in possession of a Datsun fairlady. I would also build in a mazda motor. I see that with you well worked. Have you for tips and or photos of the project. With friendly regards, Wim van Beelen

I am incredibly impressed with your build! Do you have a cardomain for it or anything of the like? I like the BP engine platform. Had one in my Escort GT (91), and those engines are surprisingly potent and require very little to modify.

    I thought the 1.8 came later? Don't 1994 MX5s have the 1.6?

Hey ya, I just bought a Datsun Roadster with a 1990 Miata 1600 engine and 5 speed. Question, how did you hook up your speedometer and tachometer?

@@RaviWaco The Datun Roadster with the Miata engine trans, ran and drove great... The problem was I wanted to keep the vintage Datsun speedo, tach, etc, but there is not interface to the Miata engine. The Datsun tack is mechanical cable drive from the old style distributor, Miata, no distributor, speedometer to miata trans connection problems too. Sold the car without gauges working.
