1994 F-body LT1 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am OBD1 OBD2 code readers

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This time, we try to get to the bottom of whether a 1994 Trans Am is OBD 1 or OBD 2. Our findings may surprise you. Hopefully, in the end you come away better informed of the challenges experienced during the OBD changeover and how it did or did not affect the 1993 and 1994 model years of F-Body Camaros and Firebirds.
Thanks for watching and please subscribe for more great content if you haven't already!

You have the exact same car as you have been great on giving me ideas of what to expect or check I saw your no start video and my plan was to go straight to the feul relays and go straight past the fuses I have high hopes that I'm having the same problem thanks for all your information

Was looking at the codes that came out. A lot will be saved from when you were diagnosing the miss. The fuel relay from the compression check the oxygen from when you forgot to plug it in. i would do a full reset of system run the car then run the test again should narrow your results. My 96 Camaro SS just gave a hard start yesterday and seems to be having a miss now which has lead me to watch your videos. Thank you for posting changing plugs and wires for starters tomorrow. But have a feeling its optispark time.Im hoping its just a wire like seen in your video.

I can say I definitely learned a lot from this video and I respect you for continuing to try to find out what's going on with your trans am and I truly know that you eventually we'll figure it out. my Firehawk right now is still overheating even after I had a new radiator water pump and cooler running thermostat installed but now I'm getting a hypertech power programmer that will allow me to reprogram my fans to come on at 210° instead of 235° so hopefully my Firehawk won't overheat anymore. Thank you for always doing these videos and keep them up! 😎👍

I wired up my electric waterpump and cooling fans to manual switches. I quit trusting the relays, have to keep eye on temp gauge and volt meter. They light up different colors so I can tell they are on at a glance.

Happy New Year everyone, update on my 94 FireHawk. I would like to thank Bif . . .I learned soo much from his awesome vids, newly acquired Firehawk and got a "SES", I have Mac so I ended up purchasing a "OTC-3211 Scan tool" by BOSCH to find out whats going on. I was nervous and waited a couple days to try it out. Well I got only 1 DTC and it was : 29 = Output Driver (ODM) Fault.EAS Circuit which translates to the "Secondary Air Pump". I was able to rectify this for now until I actually replace the unit.. .its only "on" at start up for emissions. . .it pumps air into exhaust manifold to lean out mixture to heat up Cat(s) while in "open loop" then kicks off. It doesn't really effect drivability from what I read. I read on various forums to check fuse, it was blown which triggers the "SES" light and to kick on both fans on hi. I unplugged the sensor going to the pump followed by replacing fuse with new fuse "20 amp" and then clear the code using the scan tool. It worked like a charm.

I bought an actron elite auto scanner cp9185 it reads obd1 and 2 but for 1 you do have to have the cigarette lighter plug hooked up but theirs a port built into scanner. I went through a lot of bs before I figured that out finally for my 94 z28. It’s a pretty good scanner.

@anthonyraue4170 I see your comment on the PCM episode. Not sure which of these readers you're saying you have, but since I never had much luck with them, I don't have much to offer. However, if the key chip is causing you problems, the first thing I would do is to try to bypass that! I've not needed to do that, but this video seemed to explain it pretty well when I was considering it... kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYSfqraxdLTWm6g.html

Biff: I just bought a 1994 Pontiac Firehawk and the "SES" comes on after it warms up. Prior to this when I drove it home. . .app 30 minutes. . ran ok ( no SES ) car had been sitting and probably had old/bad gas, I ran that out completely until it wouldn't start ! The Firehawk was suffering from hesitation/stumbling/popping and low RPM miss. it did not do this when cold however !!! Before I put new fresh Mobil 93 in it I found a sensor unplugged ( I believe its was for the air pump ) I plugged it back in and then started it. Runs 100X better now and very little hesitation now. . .very responsive. Now I get a "SES" and when I hear the 2 fans kick on thats when the SES comes on and stays on. If I turn it off for a second and restart it no SES light at first but app 1:30 seconds later the SES comes on and stays on. So I want to find out what code/codes are and finding out after watching your video that on my year "1994" its not as easy I thought. Not sure what to do?

First of all...good luck! Second, it's easy enough to grab a scanner like one I use in this video, but it comes at a cost. I don't use PC, but rather Apple computers, so the options for buying the ALDL cable and downloading the free software (eehack or scan9495) don't work for me. However, you may want to give them a try. Good feedback on them from BLK Bandit and TinHatRanch in the comments of my latest video...

@@FearlessMods Good afternoon, I already plugged in the 9140g scanner and it gave 9 errors. In the menu I selected, 1994, VIN P eighth position and VIN F fourth position, No truck and to finish other transmission (not manual). My problem is that if I search on the internet for codes 42,43,44,45,51,52,53,54,55, some pages say different meanings or others say that codes 52 and 54 do not appear. What I think is that the scanner reads incorrectly in my car model although I selected the parameters correctly as I wrote above. Another thing I think is that I don't have the correct list of codes, so if the reading is correct, there must be a list with codes 52 and 54 enabled. What could it be? thank you

I found an old note I had taken where I was showing all of those codes except 52. That's when I was investigating Open vs. Closed Loop operation and issues. For Open loop, I was considering TP sensor, engine coolant and MAP sensors. For Closed loop, I was considering O2 sensor voltage. Mine ended up stumping me for many more months until I found my Cat was plugged up, but those may be something for you to consider. Unfortunately, there is no smoking gun.

If O2 readings were lean at startup.. Fuel trims will increase, possibly causing a misfire after closed loop(when car is warm) MAF sensor should read around 6 to 9 Gms/sec.. Any less, suspect dirty/bad MAF.. Any more = bad MAF Tough vaccum leaks to find.. Brake booster, pcv valve, intake gaskets & exhaust leak b4 O2 sensors.. Good luck.. The 95 is even more odd. It uses a 16 pin obd2 shaped connector but its pinouts are different than a standard 16 pin obd2. It's called a 16 pin aldl sometimes referred to as obd 1.5. I use free LT1 scanning software called scan9495 with my laptop and a 16 pin aldl cable for my 95 trans am. I also have aldldroid for my galaxy s8+ and use the same usb to 16 pin aldl cable along with a female USB to male USB-C adapter and can scan codes and run datalogging right from my phone. You can do the same thing with a 12 pin obd1 to usb with a 94.
