To my mind, the truth is that if you take Doohan out of the ecuation in the second half of the 90s, there were not such a superclass rider. In the recent years we are used to see 4-5 riders with massive talent each seasson, but that was not the case in that era...

In 1994, Doohan, Schwantz and Kocinski From 1995 to 2000, It was one of the periods with LOWEST LEVEL ever (Doohan apart). For that Reason, Rossi had It so easy. The moment that Stoner,s generation appeared, they TOOK over.

you can´t compare those bikes from the 90´s to the ones used nowadays. The sport has evolved, becoming more global, much more specialized and methodical now and of course a huge array of mechanical and electronic devices play a huge role today as well. Chances to become a MotoGP rider and be successful with a competitive bike are relatively higher now. 500cc bikes were hard to tame back then. Rainey would have been a nightmare for anyone, Schwantz was badly hampered by injuries, Puig had an awful almost career-ending crash at Le Mans...There´s no point in comparing eras...any MotoGP rider, even the most talented, would have had serious trouble driving the 500c bikes and I'm not sure how well the riders from the 90´s would have performed in the MotoGP category.

I'm not taking anything from Mick, but winning the title on HRC NSR (with Wayne gone and Kevin left in stiches) was no brainer. Yep, he had WC in a bag in 1992. until Assen... Good things for those who wait... And train day in day out

I agree, not taking anything away from him either but... there was a serious lack of good bikes and good riders from 1995 to 1998. With Schwantz and Rainey at the top of their game in the previous years, Doohan had a muuuuuuch harder time succeeding.

Many schools came up with kids riding minibikes. That·s the only reason young Spanish riders have been top for all these years. Italy has done the same for a few years so the results are now turning up. Thats the only secret of spaniards winning. Dorna has nothing to do with what you expres here.

@@CP-kb1du Rossi has been riding the Repsol Honda RCV 211 both in 2002 and 2003. Even Katoh rode a factory Honda RCV and don't presume that -as a Japanese- his bike was worse than a Repsol Honda. Of course I've to admit that it's considered to be a privilege to race for Repsol Honda. It's to be compared with driving for Ferrari in Formula 1 which hasn't turned out to be the best car for many years though.
