1994 Candlepin Bowling Championship - Full Telecast
Спорт
(Re-uploaded in higher quality, in HD and in one piece. Sadly I don't have the full intro to this and part of the very end gets cut off too, I'll re-upload this again if I ever find the full pieces that are missing.) Air date: 8/27/1994. In what was the 2nd to last overall Championship show on Channel 5, this was the big event to wrap up the 1993-1994 season of the program, featuring the top five bowlers that had the highest three string totals all around from that particular season to see who would take home the top prize of $10,000. This show would also make history as being the only Championship show to feature a female competitor in the field of the top five bowlers.
The top five bowlers from this telecast were: Dick O'Connell, Tom Morgan, Tom Olszta, Janet Poch, and Bruno Defeo.
Hope you all enjoy, R.I.P. Tom Morgan and Dick O'Connell.

All classic bowlers!! Thanks for the ride!!
Hats off to Janet Poch, she bowled like she belonged and came soooo close to knocking off Bruno DeFeo in that first string.

She looks awesome in 2023. She lost a lot of weight.
Thanks, I just watched this last week on another channel broken up into different parts, this is a better recording and the audio is better.
i'm sure i saw this live back then but i remember nothing about it. i'm getting old.
Hey wolf, is there a way to categorize all of the ch.5 candlepin bowling videos with Don Gillis in one folder or Playlist? You have so many videos, I was scrolling thru and only made it to the last three years of uploads lol.
Janet is just as tough as all those guys. It would be an honor to bowl against her.
RIP Dick O’Connell.
Bruno was shaking!!!!! Wow what a great first string. Go Janet!
Love the picked fence rather than GranMa's teeth..lol
Such a nostalgic blast from the past.
6:08 grandma's teeth. A cruel game, candlepin is.
I’m surprised stacia zernacki (sp) never made this tourney to this point

Stasia Czernicki was past her prime by the time they went to the 5-bowler format in 1983. Still a great bowler but not on that level that Janet Poch caught lightning in a bottle and hit during the women's competition in the fall of '93. Her sons picked up the torch though!
The championship shows of 1993 and 1994 are total carbon copies of each other and played out exactly identically. Here’s how: (warning: spoilers ahead) 1993: #5 seed Al Johnson barely squeaked by #4 seed Craig Holbrook 1994: #5 seed Bruno DeFeo barely squeaked by #4 seed Janet Poch 1993: #3 seed Brian McKinley DRAMATICALLY forced overtime in the last box and won it over #5 seed Al Johnson 1994: #3 seed Tom Olszta DRAMATICALLY forced overtime in the last box and won it over #5 seed Bruno DeFeo 1993: #3 seed Brian McKinley easily defeated #2 seed Jeff Atkins by 35 pins (139-104) 1994: #3 seed Tom Olszta easily defeated #2 seed Tom Morgan by 35 pins (130-95) 1993: #1 seed Tom Olszta started out neck and neck with #3 seed Brian McKinley, but ran away in the second string to easily win the championship. 1994: #1 seed Dick O’Connell started out neck and neck with #3 seed Tom Olszta, but ran away in the second string to easily win the championship. I mean WHAT are the odds of that?

And in both '93 and '94, the 4 seed just missed by inches the shot that would've given them the win. Poch had a spare leave she whiffed on and fell just short, while Holbrook was filling a spare, needed six to tie and seven to win, and ended up with a thin hit and only got five pins.
I'm starting to notice a pattern of people in the audience on all these channel 5 episodes, there's a girl with long brown hair and then there's this old man standing in the back that's in like almost every episode, anybody know who these folks are?

@@kyledavis1354 I assume Stacy is still alive, she looked like she had long semi curly Brown hair, the old man in the back has probably passed I'm sure, looked like he had big round glasses on and would always stand up against the back wall.

I always thought that the gal that is wearing what I call a college sweatshirt, if that is who you are referring to, is in my opinion a girl related to Tom Olzsta. I have seen her face at so many matches that Tom had participated in back then especially the weekly shows. If you freeze frame this video at 11:27 I am referring to the gal in the white sweatshirt with heavy blue lettering beside the tank topped man on the right. She even looks like a girl version of Tom facially to me. As an aside, there is a gentleman one row above talking on a cellphone, I had no idea they were around back in 1994!

@trinitylancer yeah they had cells back then and even earlier :) Yes at 11:27 that is the girl I'm talking about. and directly to her left (or our right) She is always with that gentleman that's wearing a black tank top. And I agree she must be related to Tommy because I always see her in the audience whenever he is playing.

@@morejelloplease I got very curious about the gal you said was always at Tom Olszta's tapings or live shows like this one. I too quietly wondered for years watching these videos who she was, she had a face similar to Tom's. I was watching an Olszta/McPhail match from 1983 from Sammy White's just out of pure happenstance today. Don Gillis gave some background regarding Tom at that match, saying he was married with 2 children. Low and behold in the audience is the gal we discussed with a todler on her lap who looks to be about 4 years old and could perhaps be Tom's son (just a thought). Next to her on her left appears to be the burly fellow that we talked about but with much more hair and quite a beard to go along with it being 11 years younger than he was in the 1994 Championship. The telecast is quite grainy but freeze frame it at 6:41 and see for yourself. I knew Ronny McPhail back in the day from Riverside Lanes in Watertown, Mass and that made me watch it. All in all the gal could be Tom's wife or sister with her own son but I am leaning on her being Tom's wife and the big guy could be a relative attending and cheering on Tom's bowling in person whenever possible. I don't see the young boy interacting with him when the camera is showing the audience during the entire 1983 show. What is your opinion if you have time to watch the 1983 match, jello?.... Back to this Championship! Do you think that the boy in the red shirt (wearing glasses) seated to the right of "our gal" in the above video could be Tom's teenage son or does the boy look older than 15? The boy does look quite tall if you look at his legs even though he is seated. Yet he can be seen smiling and clapping when Tom gets a strike or makes a difficult spare.
Uncle Janet gave an impressive run.

The announcers: oh my God! A woman! Can you say woman on TV? Woman woman woman. God, I can’t help myself.

Ed Harding was an absolute joke of an announcer, and Don Gillis, though a true pro, was long retired from being the dean of Boston’s sportscasters.
