I also just did this to mine this past spring. Used your previous video for reference. Soon I will need to reseal my lower. I'm starting to get a little water in my gear lube. Not to bad just yet. I would like to see a video showing the differences between the 40 48 50 & 55. Maybe converting a 40 to a 50.

Those 3 screws that hold on the side cover on are a real pain yo get out .but gives real good access to shift rod screw, well worth taking cover off.in process install new pump haven't tried to put side cover back on. Wish me luck!

Great tutorial. I just want to add that make sure you dont twist that shift rod in or out while changing the water pump or else the damn thing wont shift into either reverse or forward, depending on which way to twist it. Ask me how i know lol. I literally just changed the pump on my father-in-laws 1990 40HP evinrude. I guess they make a special tool that has a hole on the end where you can put the shift rod bolt on one end and then sit it on the housing of the bottom end which shows exactly how long that rod needs to be. Well I tried to make a DIY one based on some measurements using a yard stick. It didnt work too well. Ended up just guessing, putting it back together and having to take it apart a couple more times until I got it right.

Had an idea. Putting a zip tie on the impeller, bending the paddles, would make sliding the pump housing over it easy.

hey brandon, looks like your gear oil was a little milky, mine was the same colour the other day when i changed it. Did you change your seals right away or did you think it wasnt that bad. I'm a bit concerned that it will do some damage to mine.

You need to make sure lower O ring is seated properly in the impeller. If not it will break and you'll be doing the job again. It's the O ring that is by the impeller key. You can't just slide it in and think it will seat properly.

Hello Brandon, I have a 97 2 stroke 40hp evinrude, where can I find a jet drive for this as I am traveling up and down the Des Moines river and it does get shallow. Is it a viable and cost effective procedure? The lower unit and prop need replacing already. Any help or advice on where to look would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

So, I did a full seal kit on my 40 Johnson. Exactly like you did in the video. Put it together and the gears aren’t engaging correctly. Didn’t miss any parts only thrust washer bearing gear and bearing carriage. Matches service manual parts. Do I need to get that bearing carrier in there further? With that special tool hammer? Do I need to seat the gear in there better? Thanks. House looks great! Keep up the videos.

Brandon, my question is,,,, If you don't put that o-ring on the shaft before you put the impeller on will it still pump ? When I took mine apart, it didn't have one so I left the new one out. Reinstalled the lower unit and it still won't pump. Pulled apart again and made sure everything was still intact. Reinstalled and still doesn't pump. Any advice ?

Greetings from Finland. Not exactly to this video and not sure that you want to give a hint...but anyway. I have a 1990 Johnsson 40 vro, well not vro anymore thanks to you. And i take carbs from 50 hp evinrude and put them in Johnsson. But the fu##er lost a spark from lower cyl. CDI box and sparplugs (Champion) are new comp test showed 9,5 bar to each cyl. Lower plug is wet, so there is fuel. Next i was going to take the flywheel off and chek the coil. Any hint for anything else what could be the problem. Great channel, keep up good work

@LionelRichiesCrackpipe In Finland there was a hp limit when you have to register your boat (still is). It was under 20hp or 4m lenght of your boat. So there's not ton's over 20hp outboard's on the market's from that era. It's 200€ for new updatet version of the trigger/cdi for that engine. Haven't buy it yeat, cause being building a mini jet boat...
