I used to work on outboards for a living, but that was well over 20 yrs. ago. Now my neighbor inherited a boat from his late son and needs my help to get it running again. Thank you for refreshing my memory.

My memory kept refreshing afterwards. As I recall, most outboards sold as a single unit turned clock-wise as viewed from the top. Only one of a pair sold together would likely turn counter clock-wise. Much like twin inboards or I/O units would. It keeps the thrust and maneuverability in balance. JMO.

I have watched many KZread videos over the past several years and have to say that this fellow has real talent. A real gift for using just the right amount of words and description as he goes thru the process. I especially enjoyed the magical appearance of the cup of coffee. That moment actually made we hunger for a cup myself. I was disappointed in the comment about former President O'Bama and realized that this American probably voted for Trump. Isn't it amazing how we as people can enjoy things together like working on our engines and boats and yet have varied opinions when it comes to our politics. Surely that is what makes the world go round. Thanks for a well done and well thought out video!!

Thanks for this video! Replaced the water pump myself and motor runs fine. To make life easier, as a suggestion, when you are putting the impeller cap on the impeller, you can have a second person tie the impeller and then face the classes the right way and then slide the cap on. Works great!

Thank you so much, Ralph! I appreciate the details like the key and directional chamfer on the inside of the impeller. Got the lower unit off and going to use your detailed advice to hopefully get me through the water pump service once the kit arrives. I left the shift rod on the upper power unit (my 97 Johnson 30 has a linkage disconnect behind the water intake screen) and I pulled the water pump copper tubing out with the lower unit, so hopefully I haven't funked it up and will be able to guide the top of that tubing back in! Best wishes. "I wish I had a fresh cup of coffee...there it is!"

God bless you sir! I watched every you tube video, bought an O&M and with full confidence took on the project, but got to the shift shaft part and couldn"t figure out for the life of me how that hidden pin came out! Neither the blow up in the O&M or the instructions described how that was assembled!! They talk about it being a pin or bolt NOT depending on the year, but most likely a bolt, so I even got to the point where I started to think I was looking at the snapped off head of a bolt and thinking what a nightmare this had turned into. If you hadn't of shown that opposite side pin and lever and how that bell crank is two halves, I would still be scratching my head. Thanks for the "instant coffee" and the Nobama coment!

You did a very good job of explaining how to change an impeller on a Johnson outboard. The only thing I would suggest is that instead of grease lubricating the actual impeller and because it is made of rubber, it might be better to use a 50 to 50 percent dish soap and water to lubricate the rubber impeller because the grease may react with the rubber.
