the most putrid producing of a homerun derby, why are we seeing close-ups of the batter's face while they're pitching it??? the camera is panning all over the place, I'm not seeing that traditional broadcast view, who the eff was directing this production?!?!?! awful

I'm from Cincinnati Ohio. My dad started taking me to Reds games when I was 7 years old. I was fortunate enough to see Ken Griffey Play with The Big Red Machine. True Jr. Has a Great swing, but I think that he got it from his dad! Lol. My friend lived across the street from Bobby Tolan(d) and lots of the Reds used to come over his house and have a beer. My brother's played knothole with Johnny Bench's nephew's and Johnny came to a couple of games. I played baseball with Gordy Coleman's son, and Dave Parker's little brother!

I'm convinced this era was MLBs greatest times in my lifetime. Baseball card collecting was awesome, and it had value then. MLB had a LOT of swag and drama. Can you imagine if these players played now, they'd get "plunked" soo many times for their strutting from home runs? -Albert Belle was the villain, -Ken Griffey Jr was the superhero, -Juan Gonzalez was THE first Alex Rodriguez -David Justice was Blair Underwood in a uniform, married to Halle Berry -Mike Piazza The Cool Bat swinging Italian -Bobby Bonilla The overpaid kid from The Sandlot -Barry Bonds X-Men mutant masquerading as a normal human -Cecil Fielder Beer League Softball player in a MLB Uniform

Best era by far. Forget about the juice, nobody knew until 10 years later, it was just a fun era. I’m a little biased, but the greatest World Series ever played in ‘91. The McGuire vs Sosa battle was must-see TV. Me and my buddies would have our own home run derbies and pretend we were McGuire or Griffey or Bonds, trying to copy their swings. Back when groups of kids still did that kind of thing. Love this video, brings back great memories!

@@Saltychip294 Not really. They still push the limits with supplements and other things. All sports do. There were still great players from that era that didn't juice, so I think it should be your own choice. Roids can't help you time a fastball or hit a curve.

Griffey has the most beautiful swing to ever grace the sport. And his smile matches his swing.

The Kid is my all time favorite player and I loved his swing. But I think I like Will Clarks a little more.

I was 10 years old. These guys were my heroes... awesome time for MLB.

Hard to watch this and not miss the 90's. Easily the best decade EVER to have been alive.... IMO.

I had a lot of fun in the 90s as a 30 something, but being a 20 something in the 80s was way more fun. Just sayin. But the 90s were the last hurrah of the 20th century, humor, basically anything good before the megacorps destroyed small business and everything sucks a dick now.

@MANCHESTER UNITED soccer is like a soup opera, and all the player look like miss universe. How boring could be a match without a winner? just in soccer. This sport is overworth in all the planet. In some countries where baseball can begin the owners of the soccer teams move their influence with the goverment to sabotage. By the other hand in united states soccer has been welcome, in my personal opinion i love sports but soccer is for women

I've always wanted to see the actual moment Griffey hit the warehouse, it's never shown in highlight clips. It was so cool to see the Oriole fans go crazy and Mike Patrick acknowledge it. Griffey having to step out and smile at the official announcement. If you're looking for just that, it's at 18:32.

Ken Griffey Jr, not only had the sweetest swing ever... I definitely think he should be considered one of the very best players to ever play the game, period. He would have shattered the all-time HR record, had it not been for the injuries late in his career. He still hit 630 HRs. He won many gold gloves in CF. Special talent, special player, and terrific person..there is not too much you can't say about the Kid!

damn...this is simply awesome! I was in 2nd or 3rd grade at this time and I can vividly remember thinking there was NO ONE cooler than Ken Griffey Jr...what a line up for a HR Derby though!

i remember watching Ripken get 2131. a record that will never be broken.

Juan Gone was one of my favorite players back in the 90s. Loved watching him and Pudge play for the Rangers. Such a shame his career died as soon as he was traded to the Tigers.

He was my favorite non-oriole player. He was so exciting to watch. Dude was an RBI machine. Everyone always talks about Jr’s Warehouse shot here, but Juan’s Upper Deck blast was actually longer. I was lucky enough to be there, it was insane

At 18:32 is where Griffey hits one off the warehouse. There is a marker for that in OPACY on the wall where it hit.

28 years later, and he's still the only player to hit the warehouse on the fly, and even then, he barely did it. The warehouse is a huge optical illusion.

@@ilikesodaa1643 fun thought- Prince retired after the age of 32. Bonds hit 343 home runs after the age 32. Had Prince had the same longevity, and stayed healthy, I would think he could have been in the 600-650 career hr range.

Cool fact about Camden, they have a plaque on the wall of the warehouse where Griffey hit that monster bomb. Pretty impressive to see the yard and their appreciation of baseball history.

Griffey Jr's swing is so smooth. It's perfect.

Exactly....awful camera work....I've seen that angle at times over the years in baseball highlights etc and I just never have understood why it's used....as you wisely pointed out you just can't see much of anything, jeez just zoom in from the neck up, why don't they, and don't even show the bat at all...

@Max Payne It was pre-taped for a few years. It's kind of amazing that it took ESPN so long to see this for the absolute Prime-Time juggernaut it is now. The idea of pre-taping and showing not every HR is ludicrous to me.

Heh, how many have you actually seen? 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2019, and a few more of the recent ones would heavily disagree with you. Just wondering. I mean this one is good, and a year before the Strike happened, I just can't rank it with those others. They don't even show every hitter's outs. I respect your opinion though, this is mine.

This was my favorite homerun derby as a kid and i haven't seen it in year and am writing this before i watch it again so i dont remember who wins but i remember this is where Griffey Jr hits the warehouse outside the stadium . Thanks for uploading this it's a nice piece of history to remember

Greatest HR derby in my opinion. The time period, the building, super stars bigger than their generation, the insane HR's with Gonzalez hitting the upper deck and KG Jr. hitting the warehouse. This may be the pinnacle of baseball, before steroids totally took over, before cell phones took over, before the internet took over, and men were men.

This was the best home run derby of all time. Griffey is the goat of all goats in baseball!

I love how the announcers admit that Bonds was better than Griffey at this point, but it was universally assumed that Griffey would have the better career. Little did they know how much things would change for each man after the 2000 season.

Almost zero love in the comments to Juan Gone, the winner of the derby. Was so fun to watch him play!

Juando was one of the few bright spots I had in my baseball sky growing up as a Ranger fan in Dallas. We had a lotta good players, but never could get it together in the late 80's and early 90's.

I saw Griffey Jr. hit an opposite field HR over the monster into the net, and it took about a second to get out there on a line. I also saw Juan Gonzalez hit a line drive HR out of center field, straight away. That ball was out immediately, lol. Both were at Fenway. Good times for the sport.

I couldn't agree more. I think it was the last generation of players who's primary concern was baseball and money still wasn't the be all factor (even though it was creeping in by then). They were fun to watch. It's the last generation that was dominated by African Americans I'd say, a group that gave us some of the best ever. But like I said in another comment, eventually this generation destroyed the game. The 94 strike started it and the steroids finished it. Now the ones that followed immediately after these guys were using them at a higher percentage I think but this group brought them into being common.

And I'm sorry to sound like a relic but my disdain for steroids isn't as much about cheating as is what it did to the game. It completely changed it. It became solely about the HR. Hitting strategy was done because everyone became a power hitter. Pitchers changed how they pitched and I believe the PEDs began causing pitching injuries like never before which in turn created the 100 pitch count and the era of the 160 inning ace. I miss how it was.

@@stevee231 Pitch counts in MLB are crazy now, for instance take Nolan Ryan and Jim Palmer. Ryan pitched 222 Complete games and Jim palmer pitched 211 career complete games. Combined that’s more complete games than the whole MLB has had from 2012- 2021 combined.

The average person in 1993 knew the name of most of these contestants. Now today, ask the average person who is the best/highest paid player in baseball now and most will have no idea.

I was thinking about when this would have been, and I randomly thought "hey, this would be around the same time Davey Allison died, I think"... and surely enough, the ESPN ticket mentions his helicopter accident. Crazy... Anyway, I was in the absolute prime of my love of the game, at this point. 9, going on 10 years old. Time flies.
