I will never forget this race. My late husband & I were in Las Vegas & he bet the field over Bertrando and won $1300 on a $18 bet.

I was there. I remember the crowd going silent when they heard Durkin exclaim "He's 99 to 1!" Everyone except this guy standing next to me who was smiling and babbling incoherently, like he was speaking in tongues. I glanced at his ticket- he had won the exacta. $2500 payout on a $5 bet....

Andre Farve - still a magician. Won the Arc a few weeks ago - 8th time. Arcangues, ran in the back tracks in France ,on the dirt ,nobody picked up on it . Greatest upset ever.

"Bailey was 0 for 3 that day in Santa Anita when he arrived in the paddock for the Classic. He knew little about his mount. Two weeks earlier, Bailey did not even think he was going to ride in the race. His prospective mounts were alternates in what was surely going to be an overflow field. but, at the last moment, Bailey picked up the mount on a French import, Arcangues, when the jockey originally scheduled to ride that horse, Mike Smith, instead opted for Devil his Due" Jay Privman "Breeder's Cup" Page 134. Wow! I was at that Breeders Cup. It was affordable still and not the commercial it has become now. Truly great field that day. Separate pools back then. Also coupled entries. Jerry Baileys year when he rose up to being a top jock. Good times.

Good point. The exercise has been diluted, and ruined. The big money is the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup. The Florida "Pegasus" attempt in January just flopped. At least the Arabs put money into the sport from the grass roots to the summit. Anyone remember the big thee grass races: Turf Classic, Washington DC International and the Canadian International.

I briefly considered a wager on Arcangues because he had beaten Arazi in France six weeks before this race, and Mom loved Jerry Bailey as a jockey. Considering those two factors, 133-1 was a bit of an overlay, plus after Ibn Bey you can assume any foreign horse who is shipped here (like Calidoscopio in the 2012 BC Marathon) has a shot.

My dad had it and told everyone that would listen to bet it. By doing so only went off at 77-1 at Thistledown (before everything was put into one pool).

Durkin had a sixth sense on who would be there at the finish. Declaring that Arcangues was "beginning to hit his best stride" as they were approaching the far turn was risky. Most announcers would not have drawn attention to a 99-1 shot at that point. .

Arcangues returned at 133-1, officially. The pari-mutuel system does does register more than two digits. The horse had Group 1 winning form, so it wasn't a complete shock. SVE

Bertrando was never the same after this race. I had bet Kissing Kris and Best Pal for back ups but never saw Bertrando losing when he got the lead. Then out of nowhere there was a universal "Who the hell is that moment?" across the land as Bailey threaded his way thru. It was unreal. The non-commingled pick4 at the OTB paid 18k which was a lot considering the horses that won the first three legs. I guess only a few people hit the all button.

RavenRuled Tell me you're kidding ?? the previous year he had been left behind another French horse in the Breeders Cup Juvenile 1991 !!! This famous horse was Arazi and that day he humbled his rivals as ever you will not see any horses do in the Breeders Cup! (I advise you to watch video) Returning about Arcangues ..... for a horse helpless ... he won quite easily as looking good and yet are the French horses are much better on the grass. I do not imagine if they had brought the best lol The top two countries for horse racing are France and England. Americans do not have any chance in the most prestigious race in the world that is the Arc de Triomphe and prices that's why there come any more because in the past it was humiliating. ...

Perhaps my grammer is not the best. I accidentally put "thread" instead of "lead" but that was my first Breeder's Cup and hadn't seen a lot of american racing other than on TV here and there but Bertrando's wins were strong going into that race and his fractions could leave them in the dust. It was 1991 as a 2yo that he lost to Arazi and true it was a great race (I would see it years later). Arazi was a hype horse for the derby but I didn't see it and had only seen a prep for him on grass on a french channel one night. He didn't ship well I remember. Your right that there is some ignorance, at least back then with what the foreign runners can do here and American's in the 90s and 2000s often got their buts kicked in England, Japan, etc. Now North American racing is very bad. No strong older division and they do not race a lot.

All Luck? Clearly you know nothing about horse racing if you believe winning the richest race in the world at the time by open lengths in handy fashion in your first career dirt start is all about good fortune. Google the stories about this victory. There were owners and a trainer involved, Jetshockey5, not just a jockey. Peace...

+Blaine MacMillan I give you absolutely right because that is the coach (Andre Fabre) makes the decision to cross the Atlantic with this horse to run this race! When you see one of the best coaches in the world take this option it is never for tourism. I will never understand how punters were able to mention a group 1 winner in Europe until 200/1 .....

Before the race, I noticed that the horse had Bailey and had beaten Arazi by six lengths six weeks prior to this. Scary. Just like Ibn Bey in 1990 or even Calidoscopio in 2012 for the Marathon.

Last year I might have said *”who’s here after rich strike won the derby at 80-1?”* Which I was. But when looking at both videos, arcangues gives you more of an “undertaker’s streak is over at wrestlemania” vibe than last year’s derby, especially from 2:00 to 2:13. There was just stunned silence in Los Angeles. You could hear a peep there compared to Louisville, stunned bettors but more cheering

I remember we had a good laugh in Europe when we found out that the Americans had abandoned this very, very good horse to betting ^^ The trainer André Fabre was among the best trainers in the world and had a lot of very good horses so if he came for the Breeders Cup it was not to visit the USA as a tourist ... And honestly, we see that Jerry Bayley feels the quality of his horse only after the last turn when he sees that everyone else is using the crop except him .... victory so easy ... ahahahahah

"A medida que pasan los años, mucha gente me ha dicho que apostó Arcangues. Si todas esas personas le hubieran apostado, no habría pagado US $ 269 a ganador. Fue una extraña forma de ganar una carrera porque no tenía historia con el caballo , y en ese momento no había desarrollado una relación con Fabre o con los Wildenstein, era como una sola noche, resultó bastante bueno para mí. Probablemente nunca volverá a suceder, pero fue genial ese tiempo Jerry Bailey (1957- ) Jinete de Arcangues. Saludos de Venezuela.

Bertrando was the best horse of his generation in the USA but he had a curse: horses from France! Second for Arazi in the Breeders Cup Juvenile 1991 Second for Arcangues in the Breeders Cup Classic Each time, if the French horses are not in the race, Bertrando easily beats the other American horses ...
