1992: TERRY PRATCHETT on making FANTASY funny | Summer Scene | Classic Interview | BBC Archive
Ойын-сауық
"I went from a kid to whom reading was something you did if there was nothing else to do, to a 40-book-a-day man!" - Terry Pratchett
Linda Mitchell chats to Terry Pratchett, the prolific mind behind the beloved Discworld series of comic fantasy novels.
What were his inspirations? Was he a bookish child? Is there an "average" Terry Pratchett reader? Where is all the sex? What is the secret to his success? And, speaking of success - how does it feel to be "Britain's least famous best-selling author"?
This clip is from Summer Scene, originally broadcast 21 July, 1992.

Great interviewer - could tell she knew the material, she asked good, pointed questions, was very polite, and let him answer. Could do with more like her nowadays

And very beautiful
Amazing isn't it? He talks about being 'the most unknown published author' and look how he ended up. I really miss the Discworld and wonder what people in it are doing now that Sir Terry is gone.

It would be ice to see what Rincewind and the luggage have been doing, but sadly we will never know.
I miss Terry so much...
He became the best philosopher ever. I live the way he thinks...I say 'thinks' not 'thought' ad I must believe he is somewhere in the 'after this life'.
Discworld books are some of the most fun I’ve ever had reading. He makes me laugh out loud with his wit and unexpected turns of phrase.

I miss the excitment of a new Discworld book coming out, but I'm so glad his family decided there would be no more after he left us. A true genius.

I feel like Rhinana could have had a stab at it. Maybe not carried on anything that existed but published something set in that world. Or written a game set in that world as she is primarily a game script writer.
I watched this interview not long after it got uploaded and I really liked how down to Earth Terry Pratchett seemed, so I decided to get into the Discworld books. I'm now reading the fifth book Sourcery after reading the first four multiple times. I've really enjoyed how fun they are, and how rich and vibrant the world of the stories is. They are truly inspiring.
I miss him, a lot.
Smart Lady Good at her job. Stunning really
I love the discworld Terry built. I have a few autographed hard backs and each time I met him he was a really nice gentleman
TP was magically funny and entertaining, amazing story-teller
"I think authors should be invisible" - Terry Pratchett during BBC TV interview ;)

Remember up until JK Rowling he was britains best selling author and until he got his diagnosis of Alzheimer's you really didn't see much of him anywhere. I've been a fan since about 95 and I had never seen him interviewed until he started to raise awareness. In comparison JK Rowlings every opinion seems to be international news.
Terry Pratchett and Bill Bryson. My two favourite authors
I've been in a really bad reading slump lately, picked up Hogfather from work and I'm already more than halfway through. I've had so much fun and it's really helped with my depression :)

Discworld novels are great for that. Everyone I read makes me laugh and it's so easy to shut out the mundane world with his books!

A gentleman if there was ever one! We should have a statue of sir Terry in outer Mongolia
thank you for wonderful memorie
Ah before the black wizard gear days
Great interview
Lovely man, great writer.
Fun fact when he was knighted he was annoyed about not getting a sword so he got 1 made for him and when he died he had his hard drives flattened
Kind Sir all of us Tiffany Aching's and Granny Weatherwax's salute you! You are missed beloved one. You are missed. Except by "Death" of course...
The only Pratchett "for children" books I've read were the Bromeliad trilogy. They were easily as good as the Discworld "adult" stuff. I've yet to find anything by him that I didn't love
Gone too soon! R.I.P Sir Terry
never be another

He was only 44 here! I don't mean to be rude but damn! It's funny how quickly some men age.

Only because he’s bald. If he had a full head of hair, even grey hair, he would look younger. Not that it matters, he’s a genius
