Gary Roosevelt, led by a 22-point, 10-rebound performance by Glenn Robinson, defeated Brebeuf 51-32 to capture the 81st Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Finals Tournament held at the Hoosier Dome, Indianapolis, on March 23, 1991.
The Panthers, coached by Ron Heflin, broke free from a 15-10 halftime lead to put the Braves away. A 16-2 run at the onset of the 3rd quarter by Gary Roosevelt, closed Brebeuf out who ended the season with a fine 27-2 record.
Brebeuf tried to climb back but only got as close as 31-20 heading into the final period. The Panthers then countered with a 15-6 burst to wrap up the game and the championship.
Robinson got offensive support from Carlos Floyd, who scored 12 points. Alan Henderson was the only Braves player to score in double figures, and he ended an outstanding high school career scoring 14 points.
Gary Roosevelt advanced to the championship game with a convincing 83-53 win over first-time state finalist Whitko in the second semi-final game. The Panthers led only 28-22 at the half but removed any doubt about the outcome of the game with a 30-point blast in the third quarter. Four starters scored in double figures for the Panthers, who were led by Glenn Robinson with 23 points and 17 rebounds.
Steve Nicodemus scored 22 points and Chad Ousley, 15, for the Wildcats who finished with a 17-9 record. Alan Henderson scored 26-points and snatched 23 rebounds to lead Brebeuf to a 52-39 win over Terre Haute South in the tourney opener. Terre Haute South held a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and trailed only 15-12 at the half. The Braves were led in scoring by Jeff Hutz with 16 points. Terre Haute South ended the season with a fine 23-4 record.
The Executive Committee unanimously selected Steve Nicodemus, of Whitko High School, as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Whitko High School in his name.
A total of 384 schools and 4,579 participants began competition at the sectional level.
