1991 GMC Syclone Pickup Truck - Jay Leno's Garage

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Only about 3,000 of these sporty pickups were built in 1991, which is when Jay bought his - primarily because of GMC's boast that this was the fastest accelerating production vehicle in America, beating out even the Ferrari 348!

I remember when these hit the Houston street racing scene circa 1991. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could hang with one of these out of the hole when the light turned green. These things would easily holeshot 5-7 car lengths against any other cars that tried to race them. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. Zero tire spinning, just....gone. What an amazing feat of technology they were. I heard that the people behind the development of the Chevy ZR-1 Corvette were not very happy that this little truck was quicker in the quarter mile than the mighty $90K ZR-1 Corvette. Thanks for the awesome video of this thing and and the trip down memory lane Mr. Leno.

Appearance aside this was still a horrible on so very many levels. No longer as easy to work on as the C1-C3 and yet not yet delivering on the promise of PERFORMANCE all the complexity suggested would be possible. Today I can't think of a single reason to want one. Then again I disagree with your assessment of the appearance. I'm not fan of the C5 either but to my eye the hard straight lines of the C4 make it the least "Corvette" looking of all Corvettes. No curves at all all.

From watching the tonight show as a teenager to watching everything car related show he does here on youtube. When Jays time comes, it's going to be weird, it's going to be the end of an era. With raising 4 kids, work and living in the middle of the country, I've never and most likely like millions of others will never get to meet him, shake his hand or walk thru his dream garage. Being wealthy, having experiences and driving cars most of us can only dream of driving, he seems to me to be no different than you (whomever is reading this) and myself... Really the Ford 5.0 wasn't that fast, reliable yes but not that fast. Dyno charts showed 160HP to the wheels while GM's LT1 dyno was around 275-285HP to the wheels so yes they were correct on the 300HP mark. Mind you the LT1 had all that torque at 1400RPMS and revved pretty high for a V8. I own a LS1 now but I honestly miss my 97LT1 with all that low end grunt.

I've never seen an automatic shift like it does in these cars. My friend has a Typhoon. The transmission does an amazing job of keeping the car in the power band, but it shifts so hard and fast, that it had some bigtime wear issues. I'm surprised Jay hadn't had any yet. My friends Typhoon destroyed his first transmission at the 30k mark, and he wasn't a very aggressive driver.

MexiKingiCon Well, a good start would be if you have 4wd so you could launch so much better. I’m personally going through all of my driveline components and upgrading all of them. As for the engine, my truck originally had the 5.3 because my truck is a 2000 model and I’m going to upgrade it with a moderate compression 5.3 block (325) stroked out to a 383 (about 6.2-6.3 liter) stroker so that way it can handle boost. I was originally going to go with a supercharger but then I found out that On 3 Performance made a twin turbo kit for my truck so my goals are around 900-1000 whp. Honestly, the best thing you can do is to just look around online which is the best way for research and eventually you will start piecing all of the performance parts together on a list for your build. That’s how I did it and now I have a whole list of parts that I need to get me to my end goal with my truck build. It’s nice making an entire list because it gets rid of the guess work and it’s nicely organized so that way you don’t forget about certain parts.

I was 19 and my uncle had one. He gave me the keys one day. The 2 things that really impressed me was the AWD starts and the braking. With the all the weight up front on the discs it really stopped. With that new fangled anti lock tech I felt free to push them as hard as I wanted but never to stutter. But what did a 19 year old middle class kid in 1992 have to compare it too. That was big day for me.Fond memories of the Syclone. I finally got to drive one of my uncles cars that I'd lusted over since I was 8. Wish I would haves been old enough to drive the Triumphs, Jags or Sunbeams.

Shea Samuels He has over 200 cars and he seems to say "I drive this daily" about almost every one. I think your definition of daily driver and his definition of daily driver are far apart. I'd be shocked if he put even 1,000 miles on any one of those cars in a year. Even in 1991 he had dozens of cars, so his idea of a daily driver was one week out of the year he drove it five days straight, and then put it away for 51 weeks.

I did finally get an S10 ZR2 years later (coincidentally with a 4.3L V6 but not supercharged) which I still own, but it will never be in the same league since it wasn't built for the same purpose.
