1990s Critics Review R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS Plus Review Crew)
Ойындар
Buckle up, everybody, because we’re finally getting another PlayStation 1 classic with this week’s PS Plus update. That’s right, we’re pushing the peddle to the metal and filling a need for speed with the release of R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 coming to PlayStation 4 and 5. That’s cool news, but is this game actually worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Next Generation, PSM and other old school magazines to see what the critics said back when Ridge Racer Type 4 first came out. Brace yourself, the next corner is tough, because this is another fast-paced episode of PS Plus Review Crew.

This is one of my favorite racing games ever. The feel of the controllers, the music, even the navigation of the menus is unpararell.
Still an absolutely essential game. Love everything about it, the music, the tracks, the story, the cars, the aesthetics... everything.
CRIMINALLY underrated
Ridge Racer always makes me think of the NeGcon, that controller needs to make a comeback!
My favorite soundtrack of any video game
QOTD : Not the best, but Porsche Challenge delivered authentic driving experience of the new Porsche Boxster.
We’ll rage racer came out in 96 so gt1 being 97 it makes sense they took over in that grace period
Google wasn't much help, as when I Googled about 32 bit racing games, it mostly showed sites to download a 32 bit racing game. Tried all sort of things to get a list, nothing seemed to work, so since I'm guessing a Mario Kart had a 32 bit game, I'll just have that as my answer. 🤷
Great music, great graphics, great game.
QOTD: Crash Team Racing is the second best racing game ever made. CTR: Nitro Fueled is number one. There is no debate.
A ridge racer! I feel the need for speed! Loved all the racing games back then: Rollcage, Wipeout 2097 & 3, CTR, Ridge Racer, RR T4, Gran Turismo 2, V-Rally 2, Destruction Derby 2... Even played a lot of Driver 1 & 2. But the Wipeout and Ridge Racer series and CTR are the main ones I come back to.

I would love to get a remake of Driver 1 and 2. You listed so many great racing games.
This was a great title for its time. I just happy I was there to witness it. It was definitely more arcade where Gran Turismo was more simulation.
Qotd: Wipeout 3 Special Edition for me, a complete package with ton of extra and i love futuristic racer
I'm not super into racing games (at least ones that don't involve throwing turtle shells) but I played this for a little while on the PS Classic Mini and really enjoyed it, especially the style and vibes. It also has confirm mapped to O, which always gets bonus points from me. Speaking of, have there been any PSPlus PSone games besides Ape Escape that aren't on either the PS Classic Mini nor the PS3 Classics downloads?
Daytona USA best 32 bitter racer 😊
I just want a 4k version of Ridge Racer 7.
QOTD: For me, it was Sega Rally.
Riiidge racer!
gonna have to download R4 soon as it drops, that one I kinda missed out on back in the day. QOTD: definitely a tough call! I loved saturn Daytona although the home conversion was rough, let's be real. torn between that and ridge racer, tbh. there *was* an interesting Japanese only release called side-by-side by taito, felt like ridge racer with actual licensed cars!
This game is great but it has a flaw. They were showing off the new shading engine too much and the game is dark and harder to see compared to others. I eventually stopped playing because of the all the shadows and darkness 😅.. Turning up the brightness on the tv only helped so much.

But it came with a bonus disc of the bright original game at 60fps. Which I played alot more 😊. Ridge Racer Turbo disc. RR4 is only 30fps because the new shading engine was so overly complex
Such a trail blazer and fantastic racer!
QoTD: Need for Speed: Most Wanted on GBA came closer to being my answer than I care to admit. Purely based on the reward system - every upgrade is easy to understand and worth the purchase, and collecting the cars of the other racers is addicting. I mean, don't get me wrong, the graphics look like a Saturn game as seen through several thousand generations of JPEG artifacting, and the gameplay defines 'barely exceeding your lowered expectations, if you had none to begin with', but for a brief time? It owned my GBA. I unlocked everything. Still, it's no Road Rash, is it? Or Crash Team Racing? Or Sled Storm? Or R4? Or even a Gran Turismo? Or even as good as a Need for Speed on any other platform. Not counting Need for Speed: Most Wanted DS, which narrowly defeats Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing in the quality control department, and is all the worse for it. And when I tried to justify picking a semi-respectable GBA game over Mario Kart DS, a game that somehow scored a 9 out of 10 and a few perfect 10s when competing against the far more powerful PSP? And is still considered one of the best in a series filled with bests? I reluctantly surrendered to good taste and common sense.
