She sort of shut down as soon as the interviewer said "your English has improved" poor Björk. She's magic

It's offensive. She's trying to speak it and being told in essence that it wasn't good enough is insulting.
What she says about Americans being obsessed with communicating and being able "to talk an hour about nothing" is exactly how I always feel. I'm American and I've always thought this way.

Massive generalization.
It's painful to watch the interviewer interjecting while she's talking. I don't understand why people say Bjork acts like a child or is hyper innocent. She's obviously very intelligent, and very mentally developed, she just speaks truthfully without pretension. That's how people are supposed to act. She's the one doing the placating by being polite and pausing mid thought to answer a bunch of shallow unimportant questions.

I agree--It's excruciating to see how people speak down to her 24/7 at this age in all interviews. First, starting off by implying that her English was bad--which Björk reacts entirely politely to. That must have been so hard, being an utter genius and being treated like a child for zero reason.

Talking as a Brit I understand where she is coming from where the brashness (forgive my terminology) and open speech of Americans can feel like being bombarded with sound and language. Brits are somewhere in between Icelanders and US in that we are somewhat reserved in our language and expression.

bjork is so genuine.
I believe she was 25 years old in this interview if it's 1990. Bjork is a smart lady. The interviewer is bad; it sounds like she's just asking anything off the top of her head. I feel like I'm listening in on a therapy session.

alaprima revista haha, I saw an interview where they asked her "wot's it like in Iceland? Is it rather cold? Does it snow a lot, or...?"
Bjork is clearly nervous here. To me it seems like the interviewer doesnt seem as genuine in the conversation. I think bjork is picking up on how she is talking to her like a child and like she said earlier, Icelanders dont talk like Americans

many people get super hung up on "If I don't have this person's eye contact during 90% of the conversation, it must mean they aren't paying attention to me," and they get all emotionally wrankled for no reason other than someone told them this was important. I've had conversations like this, where I look around at things that comfort me, I hear every question and answer each deeply, and the person still insists on more because of the less than 90% eye contact. People are ridiculous and need to learn what's important in life in the moment that's happening.
She looks so young! So pure and smart, so beautyful to watch her....❤
She is such a sweetheart. I’ve been a fan since I was about 14 years old. I am 43 now and still adore her.
Omg she describes Americans perfectly “all this nervous energy”. I want to go to Iceland ❤️
This is what I have to say about Bjork. She has a kind of innocence about her that allows her to see the world in a different way. Its almost like she never grew up but she is still very bright. A lot of the interviewers I've seen have spoken to her in this childish manner because they sense her innocence. I appreciate artists with these kind of quirks because it makes their creative work much more unique.

I love how she's just staring at the ground 99% of the time. So shy, so adorable ♥
Stars don't exist in Iceland, because you see them on the bus and they fall from the sky... How adorable is that?!
i can tell she is intelligent and she is like me- crazy on the outside. so people often dont expect great things from us..
I got to see The Sugarcubes play at a small club in San Luis Obispo Ca., mid November 1992. A few weeks later I heard they had disbanded. It was such a great show, probably the best time I ever had seeing a band play.
She's so shy in this interview!

As someone who has mixed background with Icelandic included, it's a weird, almost fetishistic thing people outside Nordic countries have for Icelandic women. The term "elf like" gets thrown around so much. It's kinda creepy because they are just women. Not little elves. Not childlike. The term people have been using to describe this odd perception of Icelandic women is "IGF," Icelandic Girl Fetish.
She is so right about the non stop talking. I've long said that we talk a lot...we never seem to just enjoy silence. It's like people don't know how to handle silence.

I'm glad I didn't see this video when I first heard the Sugarcubes. I would have followed her all around the world.
She's really cute here.
Reading through the comments it is baffling and a little amusing to me how people are taking sides between Bjork and the interviewer. They are both clearly very nice people. There's just a culture clash going on. You know- the one they literally speak about? This silliness is unfitting. Bjork is a genius. So I am going to try and say a few things that I think Bjork would agree with: Positive thinking is good. Communication is good. Bjork finds beauty in the subtlety of communication rather than in the verbose meandering of conversation. Bjork is always in her own world. So are you. People from Iceland have less of a desire to express their opinions than Americans for reasons that she deliberately treats as vague and yet still maintains being respectful when giving what is a loose criticism. All is full of love. We talk too much and feel to little as a member of the human race. ALSO: To people talking about her as being similar to a little girl in her looks or personality, I think you are misguided. Not wrong. She is just a young-looking adorable person. Nearly 50, she still looks great. And she still acts just as uninhibited. Because she is. I find her very sexy. That's nothing more than a compliment. FINALLY: All of us commenting are passionate people, taking out time to put a little more Bjork in our lives. Good for us.

Aaawww! Poor Björk, she is so shy. Almost to a degree of social anxiety here. But, she has definitely improved.
No matter all the negative comments, I like the interview.
I think the interviewer is treating her that way because Björk is so shy, childlike, and endearing... I imagine she's shy and speaking a language she's not yet so comfortable with. I feel like being ten years old and her best friend when I see this - she's so adorable.

she's shy, childlike, and English isn't her first language. Why is that bad? The interviewer is talking down to ger a bit and asking dumb questions which would make her feel uncomfortable and less willing to make eye contact, but she's still an intelligent young woman here and deserves to be treated like one the same as anyone else does.

I like what she said about communication. Things can be spoken beautifully in other ways as well. I think she has always been good at conveying thought and emotion though vibes and visuals and quiet and sort of whispers of energy.
The constant shade expressed in this vid by both of them is hilarious... The interviewer is the most condescending patronising woman ever ...meanwhile Bjork is just being Bjork her very presences shades those who wish to to treat her like an idiot lolz

She sounds amazing in Icelandic. I wish for much more of it. If someone doesn't understand it, they can go on an exciting adventure of learning and get to know the beauty of the language, culture and history.
bjork seems to engage herself with looking at her hands or something else during a conversation, not much eye contact with interviewer. she can be very quiet and keep sharing to minimalism.
a super responsible mother, while giving the interview was also with the attention focused on her son Sindri, who were playing nearby.
I think the first time I heard Bjork singing was not long after her leaving the Sugarcubes. She has a pretty unique voice that was so amazing at the time, still is. :)
Watching old Bjork interviews--you love the genius, you hate the interviewer. Every time.
Thaank you very much por sharing!!!!!
Man, I remember listening to the Sugarcubes in school. This interview is so... it just is cool to see a young Bjork talking about the English language.
americans need to learn the importance of silence in conversation.
Why is everyone saying the interviewer is rude? Bjork is obviously shy and internal at this point, so she is just coaxing out some responses.

icelandic, nordic, shy, pixie, elfin, super cute, goddess of sparkle, screaming masterpiece.
Wicked cool video!
Interviewer bringing moron energy. Björk being so genuine and open ❤
This is a great interview. I've read/watched hundreds of them and considering that Bjork is not making eye contact, is fiddling, and is keeping track of her then 3 year old boy, the interviewer manages to get some interesting conversation out of her. Does anyone know when/where this was recorded. It looks like early 1990, but then why are there leaves on the ground?
i LOVE what she says about Americans communicating "wanting to talk for an hour about nothing" (@ 5:20)

I know, Bjork made me feel normal when I first discovered her.
The Cameraman sucked because, in an interview, everything the subject says "and does" is important to help you understand. The camera should be getting her nervous tension being expressed through her playing (and destroying) the sticks and dry leaves. He does for a second but almost completely ignores her. She's soo shy. She is still shy but not as intense as this.
She looks a bit like some Finnish people to me.
If you ever get close to a human... Then you will be close to me.
