What she says about Americans being obsessed with communicating and being able "to talk an hour about nothing" is exactly how I always feel. I'm American and I've always thought this way.

It's painful to watch the interviewer interjecting while she's talking. I don't understand why people say Bjork acts like a child or is hyper innocent. She's obviously very intelligent, and very mentally developed, she just speaks truthfully without pretension. That's how people are supposed to act. She's the one doing the placating by being polite and pausing mid thought to answer a bunch of shallow unimportant questions.

I agree--It's excruciating to see how people speak down to her 24/7 at this age in all interviews. First, starting off by implying that her English was bad--which Björk reacts entirely politely to. That must have been so hard, being an utter genius and being treated like a child for zero reason.

Talking as a Brit I understand where she is coming from where the brashness (forgive my terminology) and open speech of Americans can feel like being bombarded with sound and language. Brits are somewhere in between Icelanders and US in that we are somewhat reserved in our language and expression.

  • @easytoslip

many people get super hung up on "If I don't have this person's eye contact during 90% of the conversation, it must mean they aren't paying attention to me," and they get all emotionally wrankled for no reason other than someone told them this was important. I've had conversations like this, where I look around at things that comfort me, I hear every question and answer each deeply, and the person still insists on more because of the less than 90% eye contact. People are ridiculous and need to learn what's important in life in the moment that's happening.

This is what I have to say about Bjork. She has a kind of innocence about her that allows her to see the world in a different way. Its almost like she never grew up but she is still very bright. A lot of the interviewers I've seen have spoken to her in this childish manner because they sense her innocence. I appreciate artists with these kind of quirks because it makes their creative work much more unique.

As someone who has mixed background with Icelandic included, it's a weird, almost fetishistic thing people outside Nordic countries have for Icelandic women. The term "elf like" gets thrown around so much. It's kinda creepy because they are just women. Not little elves. Not childlike. The term people have been using to describe this odd perception of Icelandic women is "IGF," Icelandic Girl Fetish.

Reading through the comments it is baffling and a little amusing to me how people are taking sides between Bjork and the interviewer. They are both clearly very nice people. There's just a culture clash going on. You know- the one they literally speak about? This silliness is unfitting. Bjork is a genius. So I am going to try and say a few things that I think Bjork would agree with: Positive thinking is good. Communication is good. Bjork finds beauty in the subtlety of communication rather than in the verbose meandering of conversation. Bjork is always in her own world. So are you. People from Iceland have less of a desire to express their opinions than Americans for reasons that she deliberately treats as vague and yet still maintains being respectful when giving what is a loose criticism. All is full of love. We talk too much and feel to little as a member of the human race. ALSO: To people talking about her as being similar to a little girl in her looks or personality, I think you are misguided. Not wrong. She is just a young-looking adorable person. Nearly 50, she still looks great. And she still acts just as uninhibited. Because she is. I find her very sexy. That's nothing more than a compliment. FINALLY: All of us commenting are passionate people, taking out time to put a little more Bjork in our lives. Good for us.

The Cameraman sucked because, in an interview, everything the subject says "and does" is important to help you understand. The camera should be getting her nervous tension being expressed through her playing (and destroying) the sticks and dry leaves. He does for a second but almost completely ignores her. She's soo shy. She is still shy but not as intense as this.
