1990 Range Rover CSK goes for a Drive

The 1990 Range Rover CSK was an incredibly limited special edition, now very sought after. This example is no trailer queen, it has been upgraded by the owner and gets used all the time

Just enough posh and still capable off roader. Today Range Rovers are rolling i-pods with a lot of issues going on. Time to go back to this: a luxury yet capable and simple enough off road vehicle.
That exhaust note! Hammertime! This is sooo cool. From the time when taste was not overwhelmed by loads of bling. Great video, Matt!

You don't need bling with that presence and exhaust note!
What a lovely, lovely thing! That old 4 speed ZF sounds like it's had a bit of a work-over too, those changes sound way nicer and faster than I remember in any of my old auto LRs!
Beautiful classic RR. A popular engine swap for early Range Rovers here in Australia, was the P76 4.4 litre V8, based on the 3.5. Same bore as a 3.5, but longer stroke. Engine block had a taller deck height to accommodate the extra stroke length.
Love the purity of the two door, gorgeous car. I had a 92 Vouge SE 4 door, I loved it and then a series 1 Discovery XS which was a manual 3.9. The XS was slightly sportier and had been an LR Manager's car so was fully loaded, nippy car with a drink problem but never regretted owning them.
Quite a contrast with the 1984 Range Rover that I owned once upon a time. It had the 3.5 litre carburetteur engine and three speed auto box. Very wallowy, very slow and very thirsty. But I loved it to bits. Great car!
Lovely to see one again the last one was when they were new and my uncle worked in the paint shop as a supervisor at Land Rover Solihull and bought one home as a demo to put some miles on! Always loved the look of the 2 door but the classic Range Rover anyway the newer ones are nowhere near as good to me
Timeless elegance! Remember when the Louvre displayed it as an example of contemporary industrial art/design. I was in awe as a kid,dad got a tuscan blue Nigerian assembled one in 1978 for work in West Africa. Years later that passion got me work for LR.
Great review Matt, what a beautiful looking Land Rover, the sound, the interior, the get up and go. Love it.
Beautiful, and what a wonderful engine sound under acceleration! Thanks Matt.
The two door is still the best looking RR. Fabulous. What a thing.

The best , the 2 doors. I am happy to drive mine every day slowly with the 2.5 l VM diesel . To long to explain, I will not change it for nothing. Today 520.000km.
Great vid as always, I believe (iirc, it has been more than 30 years since my dad had one!) SD1 interior lights are in the B post, remember the round one in his P6 as well
I have always loved the Range Rover, especially in 5 doors but you have now explained the reasoning for the 3 doors of the CSK and it really does make it exclusive. I could never ever run a V8 but I so admire those who do. However, I have watched Billy Connolly' World Tour of Scotland numerous times where he travels to all the gigs and locations in a beautiful burgundy Vogue Turbo Diesel manual and though it may not have had the grunt, every other magic ingredient was there. I have driven a 1996 Defender Tdi and I loved every moment of it so if I ever find a decent Range Rover Tdi, who knows ? This CSK is just so special though. I'm watching it again now.
I remember doing pre delivery inspection on a few of these we sold at the dealer I worked at, I have all ways liked these, I have a 79 two door carb V8 but I am so envious of a friend of my son who has three CSK in his collection.
Fantastic ! Definitely my favourite ever Range Rover. So glad I've finally got to see one in action. I've only ever seen one; parked-up in the early nineties in my town centre. There was a fully restored one on AutoTrader last year, going for £100k !!
Wonderful video on a true classic :)
This is a thoroughly enjoyable video - so thank you very much!!
Did a restoration on a 1972 range rover in the mid nineties and came across a csk being broken for spares so had the front doors and the full set of leather seats for mine. Very nice when all done with electric windows and leather interior.
Nice bit of kit, that, Matt! Have always liked the early Range Rovers. Good to see that the additional tuning has been done sensibly - that V8 just sounds superb! 👍🏻
Magnificent example and what a sound! If it were mine I'd be tempted to reverse engineer it by removing the front spoiler, and fitting the old vertical grille and black Rostyles! Sadly I remember when these were worth very little and a local guy had one for a work van and swapped out the V8 for a Tdi...
Remember the CSK Range Rover when launched in 1990 as a teenager awesome sound this one makes Matty
Fantastic review of a fantastic Range Rover. Harry's Garage did a road test on a classic Range Rover a few weeks ago.
Awesome! I have not heard of this variation despite following the magazines at the time. I also was suprised that it was available here. Interesting that this is a two door version! Nice stuff, thank you!!!
what a sound that engine makes - great!
A Chelsea Tractor with a bit of class, it made my old early, well used and battered one look like the absolute wreck it was.

They need a few marks, Land Rovers that are too shiny look wrong!
Great video in all respects Matt. I don’t know how you find the time to do all that you do. Very organised I reckon. Those cars under the covers at the start looked mysterious.
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍
Always loved this shape of RR!
The 2 door Rangie is just bloody lovely. Chapeau!
What beautiful example and to hear the owner drives it often is fantastic! Great road test thanks what part of England were you testing in? Lovely scenery!
This is vastly more interesting and appealing than any modern Range Rover. Where the Evoque is pretentious and badly made, this is fun and from an era where things were engineered. The sound of the engine and transmission is just brilliant. Great review Matt!
That V8 sounds wonderful. Though I was never a fan of the Range Rover I must admit this three door is aging very well, something if a timeless design and the spec and engine make it the one to have. It's great to hear that it gets used too.
There was a CSK on a youtubers channel who finds horded cars in fields etc, i think it was IMSTOKZE about a year ago
I never heard of the csk until now, that is a cracking example. It looks like a trailer queen but appearances can be decieving. I noticed the V8 has no distributor but two 'distributorless' 4-cylinder coil packs mounted up front... was this standard on later models?
Lovely car. I didn’t know that was the first time they fitted antiroll bars. It’s not the US that use the term “dampers”, they tend to use “shocks” or “shockers”. Damper is the correct term - shock absorption is by the tyres and springs.
Love the endless orange peel in the paint
Great write up , what a car definitely a special edition .
I really do enjoy the cars you review 👍

What a great find, such a beast. Thanks. You think with such a long production run, that more limited editions would've been made. A see a 25th Anniversary edition about from time to time. Surely one of the rarest Range Rover Classics has to be the Monteverdi Safari or Sahara (I think one of them was a tarted up Range Rover Classic with something like a 7.2 V8)? That is excluding the popemobiles, military, and emergency service vehicles.
Wonderful machine that sounds amazing!
I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, I think you did too!
A really interesting vehicle & enjoyable video well done keep up the good work on your channel 👍👍👍
I've been a nut for mk 1 Range Rovers since I was a kid, and they were still being made!
Regarding size, check out Harry Metcalf’s recent video where he shows how small the original RR is.
At some point in the future, I intend to restore my 1990 Vogue SE. I don't suppose you would be able to share what the suspension and engine mods were in more detail or which companies did them? Epic Video, lovely to see the classic RR featuring and getting the praise it deserves!

I would absolutely love one of these, my all time favourite Range Rover.
What a cool car...the Classic will always be my favourite Range Rover for sure
I like this! Beautiful classic Range Rover, reminds me of the imported US Range Rovers minus two doors. And I know that Range Rover did allow modifications to the 3.9 litre V8 because it was underpowered. Makes it more livable, although economy is dismal, even by today's standards.
That's a model I never knew existed. Nice thing, subtle mods and sound good. Bet it drink fuel tho' 😁
I had a 5 door in 2005 3.5 efi I loved it it was a 1989 face-lift in green but as my only car as a daily driver the fuel consumption of 250 miles to the tank was reason I sold it all the best donny

sad but not surprising with that MPG
Much prefer the classic range rover to the modern ones......definitely on my long bucket list of cars to own
The two door was produced until 1992. When the four door was introduced in 1981 demand in the UK for the two door fell away so it became an export only model. The two door shell was chosen for the CSK as its lighter weight enhanced the performance.

well that and the reasons I said!
Bloody lovely that. Far far nicer than the Kingsley restomod RRC that Harry Metcalfe had on his channel the other week, that was very poorly finished for a £170k car. This is MUCH more like it 😀😀
Beautiful noise, great review, great car. What's not to like?
i thought i was clued up on my classics ,and cars ,i have never heard of this car ever .
2 door fleet line range rover was available for police at this time. I remember being at the factory whe. It was launched I was lucky to go round the high-speed test track in one

Parked at the factory refreshments trip round the jungle track and high speed track and then driven to the show. It was amazing I was so lucky
It's Lady Jane in stockings and suspenders going for a naughty weekend away. What a thing.
Sounds amazing
They had style and class those old range rovers
Lovely car 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Not to take anything away from the RR...But the few times I travelled in a first body generation , it felt like the wheels were tucked under the body like an old Commer van.
Priceless.

Wasn't this in The Getaway (PS2)?
Lovely motor Would be one for me if lottery comes up More class than a new one
That vehicle is quite 'The Beast'!
I always wanted a CSK and it'll stay that way , just too much money now. Just have to make do with my 3door D1.
just what you need for todays fuel prices! beautiful noise though
The interior looks like my 1993 LSE model and the same Beluga black colour.
So I think I remember a performance version of the RR in the 80's (maybe an overfinch?) With four actual headlights (not two and two spotlights) am I right?
@furiousdriving
2 жыл бұрын
There was a Swiss company (Graber?) who did 4 doors before LR and I think performance versions too, and Overfinch as you say
My uncle had an Overfinch it would be interesting to se how they would compare this.
This one puts the harrys garage to shame he just reviewed 🤓👍 Kingsley classic, I think salvage rebuilds has a classic there ongoing prodject it's also a rare model 🤔
I really like the classy looks unlike the new rolling eggs.

ooh what a beauty .. can understand why t's the owners almost daily
Instrument cluster basically the same as Maestro/Montego of the period......
60-70 grand for a good one of these nowadays is a great price for a classic like this. How does that compare to a good original Range Rover from 1970?
Didn't even know these existed , well that's it, your next car is a Range Rover but done to that spec , there's a project for you 😉🤔😁
Was that oil/water coming out of the exhaust?

What a great Range Rover a 1990 probably the best years for the Range Rover between 1970 to the late 1990s they were complecated but not to the point they are today were the latest batch of Range Rovers are some of the most unreliable SUVs available but any thing older is so much better than now
The question is Matt, would you swap the Crown Vic for the CSK?

Before the RR turned into a tosser mobile.
God tier Range Rover
Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it. It certainly high lighted how much cars have advanced. The vehicle looks every bit its 30 years. The shape of the body suggests the engineers had never heard of aerodynamics, the front reminds me of a stack of house bricks. Little wonder the company ran into serious difficulties when knocking out vehicles like this as late as the 90s
