The movie "Days of Thunder" came out a few days before this race...and that was what came to mind with that big wreck on the first lap. The "Big One" wasn't completely unheard of, but it wasn't a routine thing that happened at Daytona and Talladega before this race.

According to Darrell Waltrip, ( Grain of Salt is up to you) the cars had some sort of a floating block in the carberator, that was giving them "Unapproved" horsepower. Nascar officials discovered it, and made the teams weld the block in place. Therefore the cars at the front, then became a high speed road block, triggering the crash. I dont buy it though. If anyone got loose to start that crash it was Greg Sacks. I think being part of Days of Thunder went to his head and he thought he was a superstar. History proved otherwise though. The only reason he was on the pole here and good in other superspeedway races that year was because he was running for Rick Hendrick and had top equipment. Greg "Lying" Sack. Petty wasn't responsible for him getting into Cope and Earnhardt didn't start anything. Hey Sacks, just say that you're a no talent driver and it was your fault. It's not like you were trying to protect some big secret or keep a cat in the bag.

If Richard Petty didn’t make it 3 wide on lap 1 that huge wreck would not have happened. Such stupid racing waaay too early in the race. Totally unnecessary.

I love Petty but this was all on Petty. He made it 3 FUCKING WIDE on the 2ND FUCKING LAP!!!!! Sacks couldnt back off the gas or he would have been plowed by the cars behind him in the pack. Plate racing you cant back off the gas. Also in this era of plate racing 3 wide made the car in the middle very unstable. Causing sacks to get loose.
