1990 Formula USA - Yamaha 500 GP vs Superbikes

Спорт

Formula USA was a no-rules racing series. Kenny Roberts even entered a team riding 500 GP bikes. Scott Russell is in the race on a Muzzy Kawasaki. This video does not show the entire race, unfortunately.

With a name like "Dave Starr" you couldn't find sponsorship, proof that capitalism doesn't work, lol.

I was an American privateer road racer that went to Canada and made out with a production RG500 Streetbike. Sadly they were a year or so behind in the desired wheel brake combo. I highly modified this bike to race in the categories WERA deemed my bike eligible. WERA is a North American entity that accepted the RG500 Canadian model as a “Superbike”. The combo worked really well for the multi roles I used the bike for. I had a TZ250 that later became my open class weapon of choice. Honestly no one could compete with the YZR’s or the Methanol Monsters of Team Hammer but it was all a money race way back deep through the field. A Run What Ya Brung free for all money class.

What a great series. Like the Can-Am series for motorcycles. On some tracks a 250 GP was fastest and used by some teams. I'm thinking Dave Sadowski successfully rode a 250 several times.

Not sure about the race gas. I seem to recall the Kenny Roberts team starting out with 250 GP machines that ran with nitrous oxide to stay up with the Superbikes of the day. Of course, that all changed with the 500 GP bikes arrived.

@@billymc2681 not sure about the nitrous never head that and not to sure it would last. I saw Rich Oliver and Peterson compete with the 250 2strokes at Pocono they were definitely down on power but to this day I remember Oliver banzai late braking going into turn one. He came down the long straight away and split two liter bikes with insane corner entry speed. Really impressive ride he finished second or third. To beat all those other 1000' s 1100's on a little 250 was really something. The next year they had the 500cc GP Yamahas and easily won.

One year they brought 250s and 500s. Peterson was not familiar with the track at all. The 500 sounded so awesome going down the back. Russel blistered all their asses that day though. Quite a show he put on for sure.
