My first new car at 19yrs old was an 88.5 pony version.. 4 speed manual. The only option it had was rear defrost.. not even a radio.. I was a Circuit City installer and put in a stereo that cost more than the car.. When I finally got rid of it there was 328000 miles on it. 3 clutches, 6 timing belt replacements, 1 water pump, 1 fuel pump, 8 batteries. (The stereo was hell on the charging system till I put in a huge alternator and wiring..) and a set of rear wheel bearings..( the races were nylon! ) That car got 40mpg all the time, back when nobody cared.. I drove it every day I owned it except 7 days when I was in Hawaii.. I delivered newspapers in it 7 days a week, went thru every season, up and down the east coast, Maine to Florida at least 3 times, hammered it all the time. It NEVER quit and never left me stranded, never had a flat tire!.. It still looked and ran beautifully when I sold it in 2000.. Prob the best car I will ever own.. Although, I had a Pontiac vibe that was damn good with 315k when the trans just went BANG one day.. cool memories! Those damn seatbelts.. Sounded like that from day one.

My company car from 1990-1992 was an almost-identical two-door ’90 Escort LX; but with a 4-speed manual (!!!). It had the same Graphite exterior and gray interior. The manual transmission, two-door profile, LX features, handsome dark gray color, and an added Kenwood deck, amplifier, and speakers made for an enjoyable (and economical) daily driver.

I remember when that Ford Escort design first hit the showroom in either 87 or 88. I was just a little kid and my mom had recently bought a brand new Taurus station wagon that head chronic transmission and electrical issues. I remember the guy in the service department giving my pissed off mom a brand new escort to drive as a loner after we got stranded in the first loner car ( Ford Tempo). that's when I first learned that the word Ford was actually an acronym 4 fix or repair daily. My mother only kept that new Taurus Wagon about nine months before trading it in on a new Camry. Needless to say she never bought another American car and his only driven Toyota Camrys since. LOL the reason I remember that particular escort so well is that while the service manager was trying to calm down my pissed off mother who was in tears a Salesman was distracting me by showing me the all new 87 escort with the clear turn signals with the magic orange bulbs inside.

My sister had a 1991 Ford Escort LX for a little bit over 6 years. Even my mother had it to drive a few months while my sister was in Spain for a few months. She came back in February. I don’t know the reason why. She was home for almost 2 months to moved back towards our hometown that we grew up in. I did loved with her for 3 months. She did all of the driving back then for me. I didn’t have a car or a license to drive in the early 90’s. I was still a chicken back then.
