Our 2009 Subaru Forester has started to idle rough, coming close to stalling at times, particularly on cooler mornings, so I'm going to try replacing the PCV valve to see if that eliminates the rough idle.

We only seem to experience the rough idle at startup, and when the temperatures out side are colder. Today its about 70 degrees, and I'm not able to recreate the issue for you guys, but I'll post an update in the comments section if the this PCV valve replacement doesn't fix our rough idle issue.

    Very true! Ran the car almost 100 miles today with numerous stops. Never encountered the rough idle thing again. But it was warm again today. We'll see how it does when cooler weather returns next week.

    I take my PCV valve and drop it in a container of gasoline, injector, carb cleaner, etc, and let it soak a few hours, seal and shake the container real good. Hit it with a brass wire brush and you can put it back in once its dry. I've never seen a subaru pcv break, just get clogged. (Although with a new one on many subaru engines it can take 2 minutes to replace). If the idle is still an issue, clean the idle air control valve and EGR. Next try to remove the upstream oxygen sensor(s) from the exhaust. Take them in a dark area and hit the end of it with a propane torch until it just starts to glow. Let it sit a minute and hit it with a brass wire brush inside the little vent holes.

    PCV's are about 17 bucks, unless your in a dire situation, it's better to replace it. The dealer recommended using liquid thread sealant on the pcv to prevent leaks.

    Thanks for the video! My 2010 Subaru Forester is experiencing a similar issue. It seems to idle alright but if I go forward or in reverse and brake, the RPM drops and the car stutters or stalls. Is this what you were experiencing? I was getting a P0420 code for catalytic system. I've replaced the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors and almost every sensor I can think of and the problem still exists. This week going to replace the purge valve. If that doesn't work I might have to replace PCV valve.

    Yeah that sounds similar but it was really intermittent for us. But the studdering and stalling hasn't returned since I replaced the pcv. Good luck!

    My car stalls and has no power and won't go over 50 MPH. I've cleaned out the MAP sensor and changed the oil. It has a new battery and I swapped out the one ignition coil causing the engine light to come on. Replaced all the plugs too. So I hope this works with no check engine light I'm at a lose.

    @@WoodsTreeFarm I have the same problem where the bottom part turns. I've not been able to identify the part so I don't think it's replaceable if I break it. When you turned it, did it stop on its own or did the side pipe butt up against something that stopped it? I'd be worried about breaking the pipe off if that's what stopped it.

  • @bradsouthers7476

    @bradsouthers7476

    I did find a solution for this. You can use a 1/4" bolt or similar object to wedge between the lower part and the engine block. This stops that part from turning while you break the PCV valve free.
