1989 Odessa Permian vs Midland Lee

Спорт

This game is also featured in the book Friday Night Lights, but is only a paragraph or two in Jerrod McDougal's epilogue. Set a year after my last video, Gary Gaines sought his first win against the Lee Rebels in Midland. On his way to a state and national title, he led his team to a huge win over Farris Strambler and Vince Henderson. Arvey Villa, Chris Comer, Stony Case, and Lloyd Hill all turned in great games. After trailing for the first time all year 13-10 early in the fourth quarter, the Mojo Magic came back and went on a drive for the ages. But Midland Lee wasn't finished yet as they faced one last play from the Panther 4 with only :05 left.

man, I loved going to those Lee/Permian games as a kid in the 80's. I remember this game well, In fact I'm in the video from 3:09 to 3:12, I'm the kid in the lee sweater and hat going crazy after Ferris Strambler made a great run. I remember talking to Ferris mother in the stands and telling her how great of a player I thought her son was. She was a sweet lady and she wore a mum with Ferris number on it. My heart sank when Permian stopped us on the pitch to Ferris to win the game. I'll always cherish those wonderful memories as a kid.

Quite simply the best high school football game I ever personally witnessed. The last drive by Midland Lee had my blood pressure up 2-300 points.

Man! I remember this game! I lived in Pecos, TX and the game was televised. It was the first time I ever saw Odessa Permian and Midland Lee play. I started following the Panthers the rest of the season since all their games were on tv. Hell of a season. Comer and Villa both had 1,000 yard rushing seasons. Hill had 1,000 receiving and QB Case had 2,000 passing. Hell of a team... For Midland Lee, Strambler is a legend in West Texas football.

Hi, I played football at San Angelo Central and 1989 was my senior year. We were horrible. I remember playing Permian in Odessa and I made a great tackle on the opening kickoff.....and then all downhill from there lol. We were good at track though and I was the 2nd leg on the mile relay that got the School, District and District Meet all time record. Good times!

These teams may not be as talented as modern day trinity league super teams like Mater Dei or St John Bosco, but just from watching these highlights, it seemed like a major D1 college rivalry game!! I see why that that West Texas district was called the “Little Southwest Conference”

What other high-school in tx has in the modern era, has won back to back state titles, and then a national championship, and then 1 yr later in 91-92 , win another state championship. 3 titles in 4 yrs..

Um, I have the 1988 Permian vs Midland Lee highlights on youtube. Boobie actually graduated in May of 1989 (so of course he didn't play in the fall of 89).

Miles got hurt in a preseason scrimmage. There may be film of him from 1987 (which I should have some soon), but none from 1988 which was supposed to be his breakout year.

Yes, there was. It was at a truck stop. It wasn't as dramatic as the movie made it, but they did confuse one of the coins.

Comer lost his life August 29, 2019. From what I've been able to find, I think from complications from renal failure related surgery. I'm 'not' sure about that. So if I'm incorrect in my research. I apologize. I, like so many others, feel another great man lost too soon. From what I know, Chris Comer devoted his life to helping others. Another Great One Lost long before we should have lost him. R.I.P. Chris Comer. You are the definition of paying it forward!!
