I'm not a Letterman fan but during the 80s Dolly publicly talked about weight loss and dieting and he was not the only person to ask her about it, Oprah comes to mind as someone else who discussed it with her. I do agree some of the more skeevy comments are uncalled for.

Sean Astin has been asked about his weight in lots of interviews, because he's gained and lost for various movies. Craig Kilborn said Sean lost weight in a 2002 interview, and asked him what he did to lose it, just like Dave did here.. Sean said thanks for noticing he lost weight. Why is it offensive to say someone lost weight?

So many commenters find Letterman's remarks rude. Dolly actually wrote in her book about Dave, citing him as one of her favorite people to have interviewed her (the other being Johnny Carson), even going so far as to say that Dave's demeanor and sense of humor always put her in mind of her husband Carl, and so, she apparently didn't take offense to his remarks. That was kind of his "schtick" and Dolly presumably got it.

I’ve never heard an interviewer spend so much time talking to a man about his weight, whether or not he colors his hair or wears spanks. Granted, Dilly’s physical appearance is a big part of her persona, but move on to her more important attributes like her talent, intellect and shrewd business acuity.
