Champion Hall of Famer Easy Goer was proven on the big stage and won 9 G1 races in his career at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f - 9 G1 wins from 7f to 12f. Easy Goer ran the fastest mile of all-time by any 3 yr old in 1:32:2, just one-fifth of a second off Dr. Fager's world record mile. Easy Goer also ran the second fastest Belmont Stakes of all time behind only Secretariat. Easy Goer is the only horse in racing history to win the Belmont, Whitney, Travers, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup, while defeating older horses in the Whitney, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Easy Goer and two other Champion Hall of Famers (Kelso) are the only horses in racing history to win the Whitney, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup in the same year, but of the elusive three Hall of Famers to do it, Easy Goer was the only one to do it as a 3 yr old - the other two did it as elders. Easy Goer ran right on the 6.5f track record at age 2, the fastest 7f of the year in Florida, and among the top 5 fastest all-time renewals of the Champagne at 8f, Gotham at 8f, Whitney at 9f, Travers at 10f, Suburban at 10f, and Belmont Stakes at 12f. In the absence of either, both Easy Goer and Sunday Silence would have been Triple Crown winners. Instead, each proved the other's greatness.

"Easy Goer was a natural, with his strongly defined, chiseled features, luminescent red coat, and with the force and power of his bearing and his performances. Easy Goer would win with uncommon authority, displaying unbridled power and acceleration. Easy Goer was an explosive, powerful bolt who accelerated past horses instantly with a huge, fluid, ground-swallowing stride, the ground a blur beneath his hooves, leaving horses behind in widening wakes while appearing to make only fleeting contact with the dirt. Easy Goer was a red blur who whooshed by horses like a Ferrari passing tricycles, defying gravity and physics with an aristocratic nonchalance; an explosion of will and determination that he routinely unveiled with immense ability which brought him to the Hall of Fame, a shrine which is the ultimate honor for any and every Thoroughbred. Since the genesis of the breed, no Thoroughbred has fun a faster mile than Easy Goer as a three-year-old, while he came within only one-fifth of Dr. Fager's hallowed world-record; and only one horse, Secretariat, has run a faster mile-and-a-half Test-of-the-Champion Belmont Stakes than Easy Goer. Easy Goer also is the only horse in racing history to win the Belmont, Whitney, Travers, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup and the only 3-year-old to win the Whitney, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup while defeating older horses in the latter three. Easy Goer is one of only two horses to win the Champagne, Belmont, and Travers. He is also one of only two horses to notch a Travers, Whitney and Belmont Stakes triple, and the only one to do so in the same year. Additionally, he is one of only five horses to tally a Whitney-Travers double in the same year. Since 1919, Easy Goer is one of only ten horses to sweep the Belmont, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Since 1973, Easy Goer is one of only seven horses that have won three consecutive Grade I races longer than 1 1/8 miles on dirt; with the other six being Triple Crown winners Affirmed, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, American Pharoah, as well as Alysheba and Gentlemen. Thus Easy Goer ran a series of victories only rarely interrupted in a few races by another great Hall of Fame rival in Sunday Silence, and in the unique kind of mud found at Churchill Downs; with his largest margin of defeat in his entire career being only two and a half lengths. Even Easy Goer's narrow defeats did nothing to dispel the notion that Easy Goer was one of the best of all-time; the brilliance in his performances were worthy of only a highly special racehorse. Even his narrow losses were resounding; there was never any quit in Easy Goer. Even certifiable legends are allowed some transgressions and losses, and Easy Goer would summon up enough class and heart even in his infrequent, tight losses. He always ran well and was right there even in his close defeats." - In Easy Goer's Hall of Fame induction article in BloodHorse magazine. Former DRF chairman Steven Crist: "Even as the racing world mourns the death of Secretariat, it will turn its attention tomorrow to the colt Easy Goer, who is on the verge of completing the most impressive 3-year-old campaign since Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown season. He lost the Derby by two and a half lengths on a muddy track and the Preakness by inches, two races that Secretariat won, but he has already won three races Secretariat lost by combined margins of 9 and a half lengths as a 3-year-old: the Wood Memorial, the Whitney Handicap against older and the Woodward Handicap vs elders. His burgeoning list of racing triumphs in the Belmont, Whitney beating older horses, Travers, Woodward beating elders again, and Jockey Club Gold Cup defeating older again, is arguably the most impressive campaign by a 3-year-old since Secretariat's Triple Crown season in 1973. With that super-impressive list of successive triumphs, Easy Goer's credentials for ranking among the sport's greatest horses is certain. This leaves Easy Goer looking like what he really is: one of the best horses racegoers have had the pleasure to watch, and a worthy addition to the sport's Hall of Fame." Jay Hovdey, of the DRF: "In days of yore, they called this the "handicap" division, and often a 3-year-old would earn the title by dominating his elders. Prior to 1971 the American Champion Older Male Horse award was referred to as "Champion Handicap Male Horse." It was open to any horse ages three years old and up, and this award was given to some all time great champions at the age of three, such as Citation, Buckpasser, Damascus, Arts and Letters and Sword Dancer. Each reduced the older horses to mere spear carriers in major handicap races. This is a perfect year (1989) to reinstate the Champion Handicap Male category as it was, for no horse deserves it more than Easy Goer. The three-year-old Easy Goer conceded weight on scale while defeating top older horses in both the Whitney (G1) and Woodward (G1) Handicaps; defeated leading older horses a third time in the weight-for-age mile-and-a-half Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1); and beat prominent older horses again in the weight-for-age Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). This is the ideal year to reinstitute the Champion Handicap Male category as it was, for no horse merits it more than Easy Goer." Former DRF racing writer Ed Fountaine: "The Triple Crown campaign takes a savage toll. After the Belmont Stakes, even great champions like Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Silver Charm took months to recover. That’s why the post-Triple Crown exploits of Easy Goer are so remarkable."

The Hall of Fame champion Easy Goer ran a faster Ragozin speed figure in this Belmont Stakes than Secretariat ran in his world record Belmont Stakes. Easy Goer's track was much slower, and Easy Goer was four wide or so around the whole way. Amazing! "Easy Goer was the best horse I ever rode. He was the most talented and he had a big engine and a lot of heart and desire. He did what he did with continuing ailments. He ran awfully fast and would just explode; he would actually feel like he was going to come right through the bridle; he was like a shot out of a cannon; tremendous speed, stamina, versatility, and brilliant acceleration and turn of foot. Easy Goer had All the tools, credentials, handiness, and versatility to fashion the monumental performances he regularly turned in. A horse that ran so fast, in such an easy way. A tremendous running machine. From a speed-performances standpoint, Easy Goer ran faster and better than Slew, Bid, and Affirmed did, at ages 2 and 3. Prove Out's 2:25.8 in mud defeating Secretariat by over four lengths was amazing. In Belmont Stakes history however, only Secretariat ran a faster time than Easy Goer in 2:26.01, who was slightly faster than 3rd fastest A.P. Indy in 2:26.15. Interesting to also note that Easy Goer amazingly ran a faster Ragozin speed figure in his Belmont Stakes than Secretariat ran in his Belmont Stakes. Easy Goer's track was much slower, and Easy Goer was four wide or so around the whole way. And Easy Goer also ran a still-standing record mile in 1:32 2/5 breaking Secretariat's stakes record by a full second; and just one-fifth off Dr. Fager's hallowed world record! I quote BloodHorse: "In an effort so brilliant and stunning it will never be forgotten by anyone fortunate enough to witness it, Easy Goer went beyond mere brilliance, winning Aqueduct's Gotham Stakes in 1:32 2/5, only one-fifth of a second slower than Dr. Fager's world record for a mile and a full second faster than Triple Crown winner Secretariat's stakes record. Easy Goer did it under no urging and was well in hand by his rider, making only his second start as a 3-year-old. Easy Goer, who won by 13 lengths, also broke the track record by four-fifths of a second. His unofficial gallop-out time in the Gotham, 1:45 4/5 for 1 1/8 miles, was 1 1/5 seconds faster than Riva Ridge's track record and only two fifths of a second slower than Secretariat's former world record on dirt."

Perhaps you didn't read the main comment of this thread started by Easygoer4life. You responded specifically to james friel's false comment on the Belmont track, not acknowledging Prove Out. However, the main comment of this thread started by Easygoer4life WAS a discussion SPECIFICALLY about Belmont Stakes history. In my comment, I acknowledged Prove Out. Ragozin has been making his speed figures for over 60 years. Though I've read it in various places online which I didn't save; my source is my own Ragozin spreadsheet data that I purchased throughout the years. I purchased the Ragozin spreadsheet data of various great horses throughout the years, including Easy Goer, Secretariat, Sunday Silence, Ghostzapper, Affirmed, Bid, Slew, American Pharoah, and some others. On the Ragozin scale, the lower the number the faster the speed figure. Easy Goer ran a -0 ragozin speed figure, while Sec ran a +1. Those were the two horses Ragozin speed figures from the data spreadsheets I have in my possession. Ragozins obviously take into account various factors like ground loss, weight, wind, track surface speed. Easy Goer obviously was four wide or so around the entire track and his track was playing much slower than Secretariat's. They carried the same weight, and I am not sure about the wind factor on the two days. As far as Easy Goer's record [Belmont, Champagne etc] Beyer Speed Figures [routinely in the 120's], there are various sources citing them on Easy Goer's wikipedia article page. There are numerous links found there supporting the claims of his record Beyer Speed Figures.

Easy Goer was an explosive horse who made explosive, sudden, devastating, dramatic moves shooting by horses like a shot, like a rocket. Easy Goer was the total opposite of a grinder. Easy Goer was also able to go to the lead from the start in some races, as Day said: "In some races Easy Goer would jump into the bridle and go right to the lead. He got to the lead in some races within an eighth of a mile. In some other races, he wanted to go the lead from the start, but I instead would settle him and get him into the rhythmic beat of his long and powerful strides. I got to ride some of the who's who's of racing in my career and Easy Goer was the best of the bunch. Easy Goer was the best horse I ever rode. Easy Goer was a phenomenal horse! It was to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other huge, historic, prestigious G1 races in NY stood as a huge obstacle to a drug-dependent horse. Winning any big race on medication was/is not what racing is about; and they were commonly and legally used in all the sport's most prestigious races run outside New York. Only the drug-free medication-free races could/can be called championship events in my opinion. New York's no-medication no-drug rules during that era kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow race-day drugs was a big factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions in that era. Champions are born, made, based and/or trained anywhere in the world, but most American champions are still crowned having run in the major races in New York. And New York was and still is the most prominent racing circuit in North America. During that era, New York was alone [in the US] and was the only state that had the courage to ban all race-day drugs and medications. Until the fall of 1995, New York was the ONLY state in the entire country that banned ALL race-day drugs and medications. Most connections decisions not to run in NY was influenced mostly by New York's no-medication rules more than anything else. The connections of many many top horses, including Summer Squall, Best Pal, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great Communicator, Infinidad, Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, etc., freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs and medications, and never [or very rarely] ran them in the prominent, illustrious races in drug free New York. In doing that, they came clean with the fans, bettors, breeders and the Eclipse Award voters. These horses trainers and connections would pass up these drug free races - and if they ran in them they were often exposed for what they were by not running well - if that was not already apparent from them having skipped [and/or not run well] most of these drug free, illustrious Grade 1 races in NY with huge purses. New York banned ALL drugs, and these included much more than just the diuretic Lasix [which masks other drugs by flushing prohibited substances from a horse's system in order to elude post-race detection]. These included banning various anti-inflammatory drugs , diuretics, painkillers, stimulants, adjunct drugs, bronchodilators [helps to breathe better, get more air] , etc like Procaine, Banamine, Ketoprofun, Bute, cocaine, caffeine, snake venom, Flunixin, acetylsalicylic acid, meclofanemic acid, Naproxen, Clenbuterol, aminocaproic acid [ACA], tranexamic acid [antifibrinolytics], carbazochrome ["Kentucky Red"], etc. And these included banning MANY more exotic treatments, both legal and illegal in other states, but NOT in New York. NONE were permitted in New York, Only Hay, oats and water. New York's no-medication no-drug rules kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs was a major factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions. Belmont Park was, is and will always be "The Championship Track" because nearly every major American champion - and Hall of Famer - in racing history has competed on the racetrack. West-coast based Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, "Belmont Park is by far the fairest track in America. If you’re on the best horse, you have plenty of room to navigate. The best horse almost always wins at Belmont Park." West-coast based Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, "It's not even close. Belmont is the fairest of all American tracks. The track is big, and you don't get jammed up like you do on most other tracks because of the tighter turns. And speed, tactical speed, versatility and handiness are still needed. While a horse can win with any style at Belmont, there is a false perception that in the "The Test of the Champion" Belmont Stakes - or at Belmont in general - that you can come from left field and run down tired horses in front. But the truth is you really have to be in the mix. You really need to be on or near the lead within striking distance, and/or have tactical speed and not drop too far out of it. " West-coast based Hall of Fame rider Laffit Pincay, "Belmont Park is the best by far. Everything is perfect-it's just a wonderful track. The big wide track is great for horses." West-coast based Hall of Fame rider Bill Shoemaker, "Belmont Park, it's ideal. Belmont Park has the best track with it's fine surface and size. It's wide and wonderful. Big, wide sweeping turns and long straightaways. Riders and horses seldom bunch and jam, and a horse can run the turns as fast as the straightaways."

You better believe it also depends on the jockey. Like I said, maybe if a young Eddie Arcaro would have been the jockey on Easy goer maybe he would have won all 3 races. It's not only about the great horse it's about how great and, smart the jockey is. Pat Day might have been a good jockey but, I'vr heard he made some bad mistakes in those two races he lost. Not all great jockeys work well with great horses neither. When Willie Shoemaker rode the great kelso it didn't work out. The readon was Willie had soft hands and, kelso being a tuff boy which is why they gelded him needed some jockey with strong hands like Eddie Arcaro. When Valenzuela came in to ride kelso, Eddie told him don't push him cause he doesn't like to be push, he said sometimes the more you hold him back the more he wants to go. Ofcaurse Ismael Valenzuela was very successful with kelso. Some jockeys were perfect for some horses, Eddie Arcaro with kelso were perfect together, Valenzuela too. Valenzuela not only said kelso was the best horse he ever rode but, that kelso was the greatest racehorse of all-times.Again it depends who how smart the jockey is alot of times too. Easy Goer was a great Hall of Famer everywhere, however Easy Goer was a true champion running in many drug free and medication free championship races, and this is an important point. New York's no-medication no-drug rules during that era kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs was a key factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions in that era. New York was the center of the horse racing universe and the place where championships were decided every year throughout most of racing history. New York was the only drug free and medication free state back then. Obviously, California, Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Louisiana, etc. allowed drugs back then. New York banned ALL drugs, and these included much more than just the diuretic Lasix [which masks other drugs by flushing prohibited substances from a horse's system in order to elude post-race detection]. These included banning various anti-inflammatory drugs , diuretics, painkillers, stimulants, adjunct drugs, bronchodilators [helps to breath better, get more air] , etc like Procaine, Banamine, Ketoprofun, Bute, cocaine, caffeine, snake venom, Flunixin, acetylsalicylic acid, meclofanemic acid, Naproxen, Clenbuterol, aminocaproic acid [ACA], tranexamic acid [antifibrinolytics], carbazochrome ["Kentucky Red"], etc. And these included banning MANY more exotic treatments, both legal and illegal in other states, but NOT in New York. NONE were permitted in New York, Only Hay, oats and water. Not until 1995-96 did this change, when N.Y. allowed ONLY Lasix for proven bleeders. The entire history of thoroughbred racing in every part of the world had been governed by the rule that horses may not be treated with drugs when they compete. But in the 1970s, many American horsemen argued that the stress of year-round racing required that thoroughbreds needed some therapeutic help, and the era of permissive medication was inaugurated. However back then, New York was alone [in the US] and was the only state that had the courage to ban all drugs. New York's no-medication no-drug rules kept the results crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs was a key factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions. Back then, the connections of many top horses, including Blushing John, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Capote, Sunny's Halo, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, Summer Squall, Best Pal, etc., freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs and medications, and never [or rarely] ran them in the prominent, illustrious races in drug free New York. In doing that, they came clean with the fans, bettors, breeders and the Eclipse Award voters. In my view, Only the drug free, medication free races can truly be called championship events. Horses such as the ones I mentioned would pass up these drug free races, or were exposed for what they were, if that was not already apparent from them having skipped these drug free, illustrious Grade 1 races with huge purses. Even some unabashed trainers, writers, media [like Charlsey Cantey], fans etc of these horses would distinguish themselves by saying that so and so horse would have to beat so and so horse in New York - without the drugs and medications- to win titles and championships. When Charlie Whittingham [trainer of SS] was asked what he was going to do with SS in the six months between the Triple Crown & the Breeders' Cup, & why he would run SS for a smaller purse [$400k] in the less competitive Grade 2 Swaps, and why he did not run SS in the drug free and star studded $1.1 million dollar Grade 1 Travers, $1.1 million dollar Jockey Club Gold Cup against older, or just under $1 million dollar Grade 1 Woodward against older, Whittingham said: "I'd rather run with BLUE COWS and BILLY GOATS." Highly intelligent and a master trainer. No facing older horses or Easy Goer until the Breeders' Cup in Florida. No illustrious Grade 1 races with big purses in the only drug & medication free state [at that time] of New York like Whittingham did when he brought so many top horses to N.Y., including Greinton, Perrault, Lively One, Cougar II, Dahlia, Porterhouse, Goodbye Halo, Exceller, etc. From the 1800's until 1984 [creation of the Breeders' Cup], New York was the center of the horse racing universe and the place where championships were decided every year. The Preakness, Derby and Breeders' Cup ALLOWED all horses to run on drugs and medications in all their big races, except when the Cup was in, you guessed it - New York. New York ran the most illustrious, prominent races with the biggest purses. They still do after 1983, and they still do carry a lot of weight, but the game has changed. Even though the game has changed, New York continues to host the ceaseless tide of champions. The constancy of excellence and distinction in New York has prevailed mostly unaltered. Europe, Australia, Dubai etc., has never allowed drugs and medications. I am not questioning the great trainer Whittingham's integrity, but he did get suspended in 1986 for the procaine [painkiller] positive drug tests. Although Whittingham's vet, Harthill, was a total and absolute corrupt crook. Just do a search on Harthill. You will find lots of corruption. As for these two terrific horses [Sunday Silence and Easy Goer] , neither was a bleeder so I don't think Lasix was an issue at all. But obviously Easy Goer ran many races in New York where all drugs and medications were not allowed anyway. I'd much rather see top horses compete completely drug free and medication free. Really the last of the great drug free and medication free races [and horses] were run in New York until 1995-96. The bottom line is: New York's no-medication no-drug rules kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs was a key factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions, and Easy Goer was a true Hall of Fame champion running in many drug free and medication free championship races.

Easy Goer, what a horse! And New York was the ONLY state in the entire country during that era that didn't allow ANY drugs and medications. New York didn't allow horses to race on ANY drugs during that era, while the rest of the country did. New York banned and prohibited all race-day drugs and medications. Only New York, among all the nation's racing jurisdictions, forbid the use of all drugs and medications on horses while racing. Belmont Park was, is and will always be "The Championship Track" because nearly every major American champion - and Hall of Famer - in racing history has competed on the racetrack. West-coasted based Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, "Belmont Park is by far the fairest track in America. I use to tell Allen Jerkens that I would have loved had prove out and secretariat been the same age and, he would have had prove out at the age of 3 and had prove out been in that triple crown againts secretariat, to see what might have been. I think secretariat might have been in alot of trouble. Prove out beat him giving 7 pounds away to him cause prove out was 4 and, sec was 3 and, they say sec wasn't ready for that woodward race, cause it was to be riva ridge but it turnn ut a sloppy track and, ridge wasn't much on a sloppy track so they put in sec who they say hadn't trained right for 1 mile and a half. Weather that was true or not, prove out was still giving away 7 pounds to him and, what the hell happened to secretariats sopposedly 22 pound heart which being the biggest heart of a racehorse was soppose to be an advantage cause he was getting more oxegen? What the big heart said 'sorry sec can't help you againts this speed demon stamina one'?Prove out did 24 flat for the last quater at belmont, no horse has ever done better than 24 secounds flat for the last quater there, secretariat would have to have done 23 secounds and change to beat prove out, so where the hell are we? Kelso did 23 seocunds 4/5 for the last quater at the dc international and , that was on 3 tight turns which they have to slow down when they're taking the tight turns more than for the huge sweeping turns, like at the 2 at belmont. Then again, kelso was kelso and, was the greatest of all times for many reasons. Secretariat never raced prove out again, he had a chance toface him at the 2 mile jockey gold cup but went to canada instead where there was more money and, was gonna only carry 117 pounds which for a big boy like that must have been feathers. Wise decision and man what a great excuse cause prove out kicked riva ridges' butt real bad at the 2 mile gold cup, riva couldn't keep up with the speed demon stamina horse whom Allen Jerkens told me he had trained for 3 miles. Prove out did 3:20 flat and became the secound fastest horse to do the 2 mile jockey gold cup and posses the 4 fastest timing for it after the great kelso who crazily holds the 3 fastest timings for it! Secretariat was wise to stay out of that jockey gold cup, He never raced prove out again. Beau purple might have beaten kelso but the first race kelso was giiving beau purple 17 pounds. Anyway Mrs. Dupont raced him until kelso beat hm but, kelso didn't duck any horse. Maybe some horses ducked kelso. Going back to easy goer, I love easy goer, gee can't help but speculate had he not got hurt. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN

Easy Goer possessed numerous weapons in his arsenal and was very versatile; he could go to the lead running very fast fractions (Champagne, Suburban, etc); he could stalk, prompt and track up close to very fast pace's (Gotham, Belmont, Preakness, Travers, Cowdin, maiden, etc); and he had a devastating turn of foot with extraordinary, explosive, electrifying acceleration. Easy Goer ran so many perennial all timer performances at every distance he ran, 6.5F, 7F, 8F, 9F, 10F, 12F. Easy Goer had that peerless all timer talent, ability, constitution, speed-stamina combo. There is no way to downplay Easy Goer's numerous all timer performances - no matter what anyone does. There is no way to downplay the fact that Easy Goer ran (1:32 2/5) 1/5 of a second off the WORLD RECORD mile of Dr. Fagers (1:32 1/5 as an older horse) and destroyed Secretariat's stakes record by a full second and he did it very easily while in hand - and it was only Easy Goers second start as a three year old; Easy Goer still holds the mile track record to this day - 27 years and counting; and Easy Goer ran the fastest mile ever by any three year old conceding significant weight. Easy Goer also ran the second fastest Belmont Stakes of all time at 12f behind only Secretariat. Easy Goer also ran right on the 6.5f track record as a two year old; ran right on the 8f Champagne record at age two; ran the fastest 7f of the year in Florida in his first start at age three; ran right on the existing 9f track record in one of the fastest Whitney's ever against older horses conceding weight; ran just off the 10f track record in one of the fastest Travers ever; ran right on the existing 10f track record in the 10f Suburban conceding significant weight. Even EG's very narrow losses at 9.5f (1:53 4/5) and 10f (2:00 1/5) were very fast races. Easy Goer's so called 'slow' timed races in the Wood Memorial (112 speed figure) and the Jockey Club Gold Cup (122 speed figure) against older horses were actually very fast, as they were run on very slow playing surfaces doing it easily under hand rides. Churchill - when muddy - plays (played) very very slow. Easy Goer ran numerous 120 or faster speed figures in his career, and also consistently ran in the 120 speed figure range on a regular basis in his races; he also ran the fastest Speed Figure performance by any two-year-old, as well as the fastest Speed Figure performance in any Triple Crown race since racing figures were first published.

Easy Goer was still perfectly capable of unleashing spectacular moves on the sharper turns, as he did when he romped in the 1989 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream in Florida. Easy Goer was also perfectly capable of staying close to SS on any and every track/track size as he did in all 3 Triple Crown races. Easy Goer had numerous weapons in his arsenal with brilliant natural speed, superb tactical speed, sensational athleticism, great agility and he was very versatile; he could go to the lead dictating pace & race running very fast fractions (Champagne, Suburban, etc); he could stalk, prompt and track up close to very fast pace's (Gotham, Belmont, Preakness, Travers, Cowdin, maiden, etc) dictating race & pace; and he had a devastating turn of foot with extraordinary, explosive, electrifying acceleration. A lot of it also had to do with riding styles/riding strategies and tactics, training/trainers etc. Easy Goer ran so many perennial all timer performances at every distance he ran, 6.5F, 7F, 8F, 9F, 10F, 12F. Easy Goer had that peerless all timer talent, ability, constitution, speed-stamina combo. There is no way to downplay Easy Goer's numerous all timer performances. From the recent book Ride 2 win by Gary West and the DRF champions book, I quote: "At various points in races, Day would merely 'let' Easy Goer run, not asking him. With the red flash Easy Goer, a request to run was not needed; Day would sit motionless with no encouragement. Easy Goer loved to run, and in an INSTANT, Easy Goer would take off with accelerated BURSTS that were visually STUNNING, reminiscent of moves of other legendary Hall of Fame champions. Easy Goer also would unleash SPECTACULAR moves around turns over bigger, larger turns on bigger, larger tracks." Clearly, Easy Goer had instant acceleration at all points in races. Easy Goer was generally faster on straightaways and larger, bigger turns and larger, bigger tracks. SS was generally faster on sharper, smaller turns on sharper, smaller tracks. Although - as I said - Easy Goer was still capable of unleashing spectacular moves on the sharper turns, as he did when he romped in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream in Florida. But a lot of it also had to do with riding styles/riding strategies and tactics, training/trainers etc. Easy Goer also ran many more races in a shorter time period with much less time between races, and at more varying distances; & he ran mostly in the only state in the entire country at the time that banned all drugs & medications. SS ran significantly less races with much more time between races, at less varying distances, & all but 1 of his races were run in states that allowed drugs & medications. Sunday Silence's record (Lost 4 of 6 races) on bigger tracks with a circumference of 1 1/8m or larger was very similar to Easy Goer's record on smaller mile circumferenced tracks. However, size of tracks, size of turns, straightaway/turn speed & acceleration, region, rider/rider tactics, trainer/training, drugs/medications not being allowed, etc etc, are just a few of the numerous variables, and cannot be simplified when there are many more factors and variables. It is much more complicated than that given the myriad of variables that determine the outcome of races. Failing to factor the numerous other variables in can lead to the wrong conclusions about why horses win or lose races. It makes no sense to look at cause and effect simplistically because other variables may have determined the outcome. Just because the Earth looks flat based on the way we actually see it, does not mean that it is flat. SS held the slight 3 to 1 edge over EG in the races they both ran in. Those are facts, but who's "better overall", "better in general," or "better" in any way are all totally subjective. "Better" is totally subjective and numerous greats were behind or tied in head to head records vs other horses. Citation, Kelso, Easy Goer, Forego, Dr Fager, Damascus, Swaps, Nashua, John Henry, Skip Away, Sir Barton, Pleasant Colony, Shuvee and many others. Citation got beat 4 out of 5 by Noor; Kelso got beat 3 out of 4 by Beau Purple; Forego got beat 2 out of 3 by Big Spruce; Shuvee got beat 4 out of 5 by Gallant Bloom; Dr Fager got beat 2 out of 4 by Damascus; Pleasant Colony got beat 3 out of 4 by Akureyri; Triple Crown winner Sir Barton got beat 8 out of 12 by Billy Kelly; Skip Away got beat 4 out of 6 by Formal Gold; & there are an endless amount of other similar examples. Neither the Easy Goer/SS example or the other ones I cite show that any of these horses was "better" (which is totally subjective anyways) or was able to consistently get the better of the other. All these examples show is the records of two horses in a VERY LIMITED number of races. A few races certainly would NOT be even close to a large enough sample size if you were trying to establish consistency on a statistical basis; nor is it even close to a large enough sample size to show who was "better" (which is totally subjective anyways). There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior career, superior & better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes wins, wins against older horses & open company, running times, avg running times at various distances & at all distances, head to heads, records set, still standing records, weights carried & weights conceded, stakes wins & stakes wins vs. open company/older horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority & dominance, injuries, jockeys, riding & rider errors, trainers, training and trainer errors, win/loss %'s, trips, amount of races run, track sizes, track circumferences, post positions, campaign & career earnings with & without bonuses, races with drugs & medications allowed/used, races with no drugs & medications allowed/used, etc etc & many many more. They were both great horses, but who's better is still totally subjective even after factoring in the endless amount of other factors. Easy Goer & SS were both greats. Easy Goer won 12 total stakes, 9 Grade 1 wins at distances of 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f, and 12f showing versatility on all tracks & many distances. SS won 7 total stakes, 6 Grade 1 wins but only at distances from 9f to 10f. Both versatile indeed, but that is a big difference in versatility. Easy Goer also defeated older horses Six times at ages three and four while conceding a good amount of weight in quite a few of them. SS defeated older horses only two times at ages three and four. Many other factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins - 14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8 million to about $ 3.8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to 64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i) wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three & four - 6 to 2 ; j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f; SS at only 9f to 10f ; k) Easy Goer never was defeated by more than 2 & a half lengths in any race in a much longer career, SS never was defeated by more than 8 lengths in any race in a much shorter career; & other factors that would favor Easy Goer would be varying distances won at, records set, near records set, still standing records, running times, avg running times at all distances, campaigns, durability, constitution, dominance & superiority in races - average win margin and average loss margin, weights carried, weight concessions, etc. Other than SS's slight edge in head to head races, IMO Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors & categories. But even after all of these numerous factors are factored in, who was better is still subjective. They were both greats, but IMO Easy Goer was a better horse, had a superior body of work, and had a superior career than SS even though SS held the slight edge in head to head races by the nose of his Preakness win. There is a lot more that can be said other than head to heads.

I was at Saratoga for Easy Goer's Whitney. Yes, he used the Whitney against older horses as a PREP for the Travers! I was among the huge crowd at the rail, far from the finish, closer to the 3/16ths pole than the 1/8th pole, and Easy Goer's breathtaking move to the lead happened right in front of my eyes. It's a cliche, but he truly passed those other horses like they were standing still. What a horse!

"Easy Goer was a horse who caused horsemen and fans to enter into their thoughts the phrase, 'the most perfect horse you can imagine.' Easy Goer was large but not too large. He was elegant but not dainty. He was powerful but not gross. In short, Easy Goer had it all. Well, he had it all if you were willing to overlook the puffy ankles, clubfoot, turned-out left knee and short pasterns that challenged everything you thought you knew about proper conformation. However, one had only to see the fluidity of his motion to factor out the conformation faults. To the aesthete taking in the whole rather than haggling over the parts, the dictionary simply proved inadequate: Easy Goer was not just perfect, he was 'damned perfect.' Easy Goer was Adonis-like, the closest thing physically to Secretariat. He was plagued by problematic ankles his entire career, but was placed upon a throne at an early age and justified all the adoration. Easy Goer was a glowing chestnut with a fluid stride that belied his conformation flaws. Conformation blemishes notwithstanding, Easy Goer had the look of eagles and the stamp of greatness on him, and he ran to his looks." -- Ed Bowen & Steve Haskin.

What a Hall-of-Fame champion Easy Goer was! During those times, it was to New York's credit [being the ONLY state in the entire country that banned all drugs] that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other big championship G1 races stood as huge obstacles to drug-dependent horses. Back then, New York was alone in the entire US and was the only state that had the courage to ban all drugs. Of the over 200 horses in the Hall of Fame, ALL but 5 ran in New York, all but 5 ran in many big championship Grade I races in New York. That's 99% of ALL Hall of Fame horses. And that includes a large amount of horses who ran from the 1980's through the present. New York's no-drug rules during those times kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs during those times was a major factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions. New York was the ONLY state in the entire country during those times that didn't allow ANY drugs. New York didn't allow horses to race on ANY drugs during those times, while the rest of the country did. New York banned and prohibited all race-day drugs. Only New York, among all of the nation's racing jurisdictions, forbade the use of all drugs on horses while racing. It was to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other big championship G1 races stood as huge obstacles to drug-dependent horses. Winning any big race on drugs was-is not what racing is about, and they were commonly and legally used in all the sport's most prestigious races run outside New York. Only the drug-free races could-can be called championship events. A large amount of connections would NOT run in drug-less NY, and the ones that did had MOST of their horses exposed when they ran in drug-free medication-free NY. Most of these trainers decisions not to run was influenced mostly by New York's no-drug rules more than anything else. The connections of many many top horses, including Summer Squall, Best Pal, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great Communicator, Infinidad, Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, et al, freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs, and never [or very rarely] ran them in the big championship races in drug-free New York. In doing that, they came clean with the fans, bettors, breeders, et al. These horses trainers and connections would pass up these drug free races, and if they ran in them they were often exposed for what they were by not running well and-or getting beaten decisively; if that was not already apparent from them having skipped [and-or not run well and-or getting beaten decisively] most of these drug-free championship races. Hall of Fame Champions are born, made, based and-or trained anywhere in the world, but most American Hall of Fame champions are still crowned having run in the major races in New York. Belmont Park was, is and will always be "The Championship Track" because nearly every major American champion - and Hall of Famer - in racing history has competed on the racetrack [Saratoga also], and because it's by far the fairest with the best horse mostly always winning. West-coast based Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens says, "Belmont Park is by far the fairest track in America. If you’re on the best horse, you have plenty of room to navigate. The best horse almost always wins at Belmont Park." West-coast based Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas says, "It's not even close. Belmont is the fairest of all American tracks. The track is big, and you don't get jammed up like you do on most other tracks because of the tighter turns. And speed, tactical speed, versatility and handiness are still needed at Belmont Park. While a horse can win with any style at Belmont, there is a false perception that in the "The Test of the Champion" Belmont Stakes - or at Belmont in general - that you can come from left field and run down tired horses in front. But the truth is you really have to be in the mix and show speed and tactical speed. You really need to be on or near the lead within striking distance, and-or have tactical speed and not drop too far out of it." West-coast based Hall of Fame rider Laffit Pincay says, "Belmont Park is the best by far.

'In an effort so brilliant and stunning it will never be forgotten by anyone fortunate enough to witness it, Easy Goer went beyond mere brilliance, winning Aqueduct's Gotham Stakes in 1:32 2/5, only one-fifth of a second slower than Dr. Fager's world record for a mile and a full second faster than Triple Crown winner Secretariat's stakes record. Easy Goer did it so effortlessly that he appeared capable of running far faster, a startling thought considering he is a 3-year-old and well away from his prime. Easy Goer, who won by 13 lengths, also broke the track record by four-fifths of a second. His unofficial gallop-out time in the Gotham, 1:45 4/5 for 1 1/8 miles, was 1 1/5 seconds faster than Riva Ridge's track record and only two fifths of a second slower than Secretariat's former world record on dirt.' "Easy Goer was the best horse I ever rode. "Racing should be filled with SUPERIOR horses like EASY GOER, who did NOT require ANY drugs to perform at his best, & NOT INFERIOR DRUG-RELIANT horses like SUNDAY SILENCE, so we focus our attention on the sport instead of drugs. Could Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer without drugs? Could Sunday Silence win without drugs? He gave definitive & assertive replies to the questions: NO. Sunday Silence struggled home edging Le Voyageur but was thoroughly beaten, as the splendid Easy Goer sprinted off with the Belmont Stakes. Sunday Silence had been TREATED WITH DRUGS in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness & Breeders' Cup Classic when edging Easy Goer, but couldn't for the Belmont Stakes in New York, the one state where all drugs are banned. Easy Goer was free from all of the controversies about drugs, for ALL DRUGS are prohibited in New York, as they are in the rest of the racing world outside the US. The key questions that influenced racing all year was: Could Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer without drugs? Could Sunday Silence win without drugs? He gave definitive & assertive replies to the questions: NO. Sunday Silence struggled home edging Le Voyageur but was thoroughly beaten, as the splendid Easy Goer sprinted off with the Belmont Stakes. Racing should be filled with SUPERIOR horses like EASY GOER, who did NOT require ANY drugs to perform at his best, & NOT INFERIOR DRUG-RELIANT horses like SUNDAY SILENCE, so we focus our attention on the sport instead of drugs. Racing wears drugs like festering, self-inflicted wounds on the end of its nose opened by the ax of greed & stamped with the endorsements of every racing commission in the nation except New York's. Racing's drug dependency, like any drug problem, has become a major problem & tarnished the sport. It is to New York's merit & acclaim that their major races stand as giant hurdles to drug-reliant horses. Winning major races on drugs is not what racing is about." Easy Goer, Forego (all wins in NY & FL; 0 for 3 outside NY & FL), Ruffian (9 of 10 wins in NY), Man o' War (18 of 20 wins in NY), Tom Fool (20 of 21 wins in NY), Native Dancer (18 of 21 wins in NY), etc. The True Tests of Champions are in New York, Champions are Crowned & Championships are won on the Championship Tracks in NY - the Test of a Champion, The Handicap Triple Crown, the Fall Championship Triple Crowns, the Filly Triple Crown, etc etc. The Litmus Test of a Champion is running & winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; & during that era New York was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs. Plus, as importantly, NY banned the illegal criminal vet of ss Alex Harthill [arrested an endless amount of times for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses]. During that era, it was a huge credit to NY [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as gigantic obstacles to drug-reliant horses like ss; & these horses, like ss & many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. ONLY no-drugs races were/are true championship races. Only no-drugs races could/can be called championship races. Only No-drugs races kept/keep the outcomes crystal clear. No-drugs races are the only true tests of champions. That is integrity, honesty, fair play & complete fairness for all. NY by far ran/runs the most Prestigious, Championship G1 races in the USA with the highest purses in the country; NY was & still is the Center & Pinnacle of Racing in the USA; NY was/is by far the best racing circuit in the USA; champions are crowned & championships are won on the Championship Tracks in NY (they are by far the fairest tracks in the USA because they are all larger tracks); & most importantly, there are over 200 horses in the Hall of Fame & no matter where they were based, 99% of them ran/will run in NY for the reasons listed above. While all 3 major NY tracks are bigger tracks with larger, wider, sweeping turns, Belmont Park was & will always be the Championship Track, as it was/is, by far, the fairest track in the US being the largest with the biggest, widest, sweeping turns where horses run as fast around the bigger turns as they do on straightaways. The best horse almost always wins at Belmont. You don’t have to tip-toe your way around the smaller, tighter, sharp turns on the smaller tracks, you can run at top speed around the bigger turns. The bigger, the wider, the larger the turns, the less bad racing luck. The fewer the turns, the less bad racing luck. Belmont was/is the track where championships were/are decided not by racing luck, but by the horse that won, the best horse. There are no places for horses to hide on the huge track; horses are bare-faced out there on the huge track, & it was/is by far the best testing ground of champions to prove themselves. Belmont was/is the ultimate test because it displays & reveals every strength of authentic, genuine greats, & it exposes every flaw of imposters. The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won outside drug-free NY, & won 6 races away from his home track, & EG only lost by the slimmest of margins in other races to drug-reliant horses who had been given Performance Enhancing Drugs. Clearly, the True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer wins these other races had the others not been given all of these performance enhancing drugs, & all been forced to run drug-free w/o any drugs. Many Hall of Fame Champions won all or almost all of their races (&/or all or almost all of their major races) in New York, Florida or California, including Forego, Easy Goer, Tom Fool, Native Dancer, Ruffian, Man o' War, Zenyatta, Beholder etc. NAME ALL OF THE RACES SUNDAY SILENCE WON WHEN FORCED TO RUN DRUG-FREE WITHOUT ANY DRUGS. ZERO. Name all of the races ss won when he was forced to run without his banned illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill. Zero. Name all of the races ss won on larger tracks with circumferences bigger than 8f. ss LOST 4 races on bigger tracks with circumferences larger than 8f.

"That the drug-free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer was the superior, better horse than the drug-reliant & criminal cheater veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss is officially as clear as day." In the Test of the Champion drug-free Belmont Stakes Easy Goer killed ss; like wheat separating from chaff, the cream rose to the top. Easy Goer ran drug-free in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs, which banned all performance enhancing drugs; while the drug-reliant & illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant ss got exposed badly & romped when he was forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. The Litmus Test of a Champion is running & winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; & during that era New York was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs. Plus, as importantly, New York banned the illegal criminal vet of ss Alex Harthill [arrested an endless amount of times for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses]. During that era, it was a huge credit to NY [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as humongous, gigantic obstacles to drug-reliant horses like ss; & these horses, like ss & many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. ONLY no-drugs drug-free races were/are true championship races. Only the drug-free no-drugs races could/can be called championship races. No-drug races kept/keep the outcomes crystal clear. No-drug races are the only true tests of champions. That is integrity, honesty, fair play & complete fairness for all. In the drug-free EG's few very slim losses by the narrowest of margins to the drug-reliant ss, ss needed all of his performance enhancing drugs administered to him & still only beat him by the slimmest of margins. Plus, The drug-free Easy Goer won G1 races at 7f, 1 mile, 9f, 10f & 12f drug-free with much less time & rest between races & ran many more races at more fluctuating, different distances in faster times with far superior speed figures & performance ratings; while the drug-reliant ss only won G1 races at 9f to 10f with his ped drugs & much more time & rest between races & ran far less races. And most importantly, Alex Harthill confessed to illegally giving illegal performance enhancing drugs (Clenbuterol, Etorphine, Sublimaze, etc) to ss. The True Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer was just better than the drug-dependent & illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence. Harthill confessed to DRF's Hovdey of illegally giving illegal ped drugs (Clenbuterol, Sublimaze, Etorphine, etc) to ss; but he couldn't do so in the only state (NY) in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs, & as importantly also banned ss's illegal vet Harthill as well. The criminal vet of ss, Alex Harthill, confessed in 2001 to DRF's Jay Hovdey, to illegally administering illegal ped drugs to sunday silence (plus many other horses), including the significantly powerful potent performance enhancing drug Clenbuterol (an extraordinary drug with 2 completely different effects that dramatically & greatly enhance performance & significantly enhance speed, stamina, endurance, lung capacity & energy levels; it greatly aids breathing by significantly expanding the air passages in the lungs letting air flow much more freely, & it causes rapid fat burning significantly decreasing fat; it also has a similar effect on the body as Epinephrine & Amphetamines by increasing the production of Epinephrine & Noradrenaline, & thus significantly enhancing performance: it also thins blood & widens the vessels that carry oxygen, so the volume of oxygen in the blood increases, & thus significantly increases energy, & thus significantly enhances performance), Sublimaze (A Potent Narcotic So powerful that it makes horses feel like they don't even have legs, & significantly more powerful than aspirin bute), Etorphine (An Opiate 80,000 Times More Powerful than Morphine - So powerful that it also makes horses feel like they don't even have legs, & significantly more powerful than aspirin bute), & Banamine (5 times more powerful than the aspirin Bute, & provides significantly more potent pain relief than aspirin Bute & is far superior for relief of pain than aspirin Bute). Besides Harthill admitting it, there is the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. Harthill only admitted to administering the illegal ped drugs Clenbuterol, Sublimaze, Etorphine & Banamine to Sunday Silence, & not Lasix (which was legal in every state in the US except NY back then anyways; but ss was listed as being administered Lasix in the DRF in all races outside drug-free NY); & it should also be noted Lasix is a potent diuretic & the main drug which masks & flushes other banned drugs; plus it reduces body weight by 16 to 25lbs, & the study of 23k races showed Lasix gives a significant 6 length performance enhancement. Case closed.

Why don't you mention that sham ht his head againts the gate and was bleeding in that damn kentucky derby race while tearing out two teeths? Yah but, secretariat lost a race because he had an abcess in his mouth right? So many exucuses for this hyped up protected horse secretariat. Man of war was greater than secretariat. Look at the track conditions when man of war raced and the iron shoes he had to wear and the weight man of war had to carry. Look at the genes he passed on with the great horses that came out of him especially the great kelso who was his great grand son. Gun bow by the way was kelsos' cousin so he had some of man of wars' genes in him. Gun bow was kicking all those horses asses in california where they say it's so hard to win because of the tracks. Sunday Silence was no fluke and his success as a sire proves that. Easy Goer was however a much more versatile horse who performed equally well at varying distances. His Gotham Stakes record is a track record for a mile and 2nd fastest mile ever run on dirt after Fager, the 1 1/2 Belmont is the second fastest ever run after Sec. SS only defeated him in 9.5-10f races, and EG was always closing at the finish. Imagine if SS had been born another year, EG would've won the 3yo Triple Crown, the Travers, Whitney, Woodward, Jockey Gold Cup, and BC Classic all in the same year. Even so this was one of the greatest 3yo campaigns by any horse ever.

Samuel Pérez García Let's look at it. Easy Goer ran a still standing (over 26 years & counting) record mile in 1:32 & change (fastest mile of all time by any 3 yr old) , ran the second fastest Belmont Stakes of all time behind only Secretariat, - ran among the fastest versions of many momentous races (Whitney, Travers, Belmont, Champagne, Suburban, Gotham, near 6 1/2 furlong record at age 2, fastest 7 furlongs of the year in Florida) at all distances. Easy Goer also ran a historic, strenuous, toilsome 3 yr old campaign (Belmont, Whitney, Travers, Woodward, Jockey Club Gold Cup etc). As delclub points out about head to head records (they don't tell all) - Kelso (lost three of four to Beau Purple), Citation (lost four of five to Noor), Forego (lost two of three to Big Spruce), John Henry (lost two of three to Interco), Dr Fager, Damascus, Skip Away (lost four of six to F. Gold), Sir Barton (lost many to Bill Kelly), Round Table, Gallant Man, Whirlaway, Swaps/Nashua, Majestic Prince/Arts & Letters & many other greats also lost a few races to the same rival horse. Secretariat lost THREE big races to 3 different inferior horses in Onion, Angle Light & Prove Out. Who was 'better' is nonobjective & intuitive, but they both clearly were great Hall of Fame champs. Easy Goer was inches away (Preakness) from it being a level, even 2 to 2 (four races are a small sample) when opposing SS in direct competition (yes it still was 3-1 SS), but Easy Goer had a superior career resum'e and accomplished and achieved more in his career. Easy Goer ran 1:53 4/5 for 9.5f in Maryland, and ran 2:00 1/5 for 10f in Florida, losing by inches and a neck in these races. Easy Goer also ran the fastest 7 furlongs of the year in Florida in 1989. Easy Goer ran 17 of his 20 total races in New York or Florida. This is a Hall of Fame champion (SS was also) who didn't have any problem at all with shipping to other states and other tracks. He did specifically despise the quirky, peanut buttery, sticky Churchill mud and seemed to flounder in it being a huge, extremely powerful horse with chronically bad, puffy ankles, though his talent, class and ability landed him 2nd's in those races. Though EG won & ran great in mud elsewhere. He was among many great horses (Skip Away, Point Given, Go For Wand, Holy Bull, etc) who hated Churchill, however he never ran over a fast track there. I don't think it was about states, surfaces or shipping at all. They BOTH had to ship for the 3 TC races and the BC. Easy Goer ran many more races (and ran a much more strenuous post Triple Crown campaign) and also never got beat by more than 2 lengths (also never finishing off the board) in his career. SS had a much less strenuous post Triple Crown campaign. You can also look at the timing, distance and spacing of the so called prep races. Easy Goer ran a record mile in the Gotham, then 2 weeks later won the Wood Memorial, then only 2 weeks later was the start of the Triple Crown races (total of 5 races in 9 weeks). SS ran his last Derby prep 4 weeks out. EG also ran in the 1 1/2 mile Jockey Club in his 'prep' for the BC (after the Whitney, Travers, & Woodward, and defeated older horses conceding weight in a few of them), while SS had one easy three yr old 10f prep in the 3 months leading into the BC. But to me, It was most likely much more about track circumferences. Easy Goer did win on ALL the track circumferences of USA dirt tracks (1 mile, 1 1/8 mile, 1 1/2 mile). EG was an Undefeated 5 for 5 over 1 1/8 miles tracks at all distances. SS did not win over all tracks. In fact, SS lost 3 races over larger 1 1/8 tracks (at his HOME track of Hollywood) and lost his 1 race over a 1 1/2 mile track by 8 lengths. EG's record over mile tracks (4 losses though narrow losses) was very similar to SS's record over 1 1/8 or larger tracks (SS lost 4 races over 1 1/8 or bigger tracks). Based on these facts (EG being undefeated over 1 1/8 mile tracks, while SS lost 3 races over 1 1/8 mile tracks), Easy Goer actually would have had an advantage running against SS at Hollywood Park (a larger 1 1/8 mile oval) in California. SS would have had an advantage at the smaller Santa Anita track in Cal. Easy Goer also would have had an advantage running over 1 1/8 mile tracks (or larger), regardless of state or region, in: Florida (Hialeah Park), Chicago (Arlington Park, where they were supposed to meet at age 4), Hollywood (California), Atlantic City (NJ), Saratoga (NY), Aqueduct (NY), Laurel Park (Maryland), Keeneland (KY), Ellis Park (KY), Colonial (Va.), Belmont (NY), and the current Gulfstream in Florida is also NOW a larger 1 1/8 mile oval. SS would have had an advantage of running against EG in NY if they ran at the mile oval in Finger Lakes.

I know Easy Goer's resume very well, I admire both horses. In fact, I think those two have been the best American colts of the last 30 years or so. What strikes me as odd is how Easy Goer fans place him on such an incredibly high pedestal while casually dismissing the horse that beat him 75% of the time, as if all those wins were flukes, or (the favorite excuse) due to bad rides by Pat Day. You yourself point out how Secretariat was beaten three times by INFERIOR horses, as if to justify why the "superior" Easy Goer could lose three times to Sunday Silence (yes, I know you gave SS credit earlier, but the Secretariat example sounded bad). He was a great horse. He was also a physical freak that could withstand a hell of a lot more punishment than the puny Sunday Silence, which is why, while having comparable skills, Easy Goer could take a tougher campaign than Sunday Silence. Yet that would be akin to declaring Nolan Ryan superior to Pedro Martinez because of their physiques. In my mind, the only true advantage of Easy Goer over Sunday Silence was that build. Else, their pros and cons basically even out, with SS having the slight edge on their meetings.

Samuel Pérez García Physically, Easy Goer had just as many horrible physical deformities that SS had - Easy Goer had terrible, puffy, very problematic ankles, clubfeet, a crooked left leg, bad knees, bad shins, cracks in feet, etc (I'll provide the link at the bottom) and his massive frame made all these deformities much more difficult to withstand. I don't casually dismiss SS at all. But, I think many casually dismiss the rivals (Noor, Beau Purple, Sunday, Damascus, Interco, Big Spruce, Billy Kelly, Nashua, Arts and Letters, F. Gold, Summer Squall, Star of Cozzene) who were either ahead or tied in head to heads with Citation, Easy Goer, Kelso, Forego, John Henry, Sir Barton, Dr Fager, Unbridled, Skip Away, Kotashaan, Swaps, Majestic Prince, etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy_Goer

The Hall of Fame is by far easily the most "definitive record of racing greats." The Hall of Fame is the ultimate honor for any horse. And even with these facts, the Hall of Fame is still "subjective, significantly varied opinions and bias." Regarding HOY and other awards: "The arguing, in fact, is about the most solid substance we have when it comes to HOY. There is only one rule governing what constitutes a potential HOY − that the horse has started at least once in North America - and guidelines have never been more specific than that. Form an opinion and send in your ballot. That is all that is asked of the voters regarding Award winners." "There are no rules and no definitions governing the voters regarding HOY and other awards. People really need to understand that it’s just a subjective decision. It’s always going to be subjective, and it doesn’t diminish the achievements of horses that are not awarded. It's a fraught venture. The HOY and awards are not even official national awards as racing has no national governing body.” Majestic Prince was 2-1 head to head over Arts and Letters, yet Arts and Letters was "HOY." Noor was 4-1 head to head over Citation, yet Hill Prince was "HOY." Omaha won the Triple Crown, yet Discovery was "HOY." Dedicate, who won 3 stakes in 1957, shared "HOY" with Bold Ruler, who won many more stakes that year beating superior competition. 2 year old Favorite Trick was "HOY" over a host of far more accomplished older horses in Formal Gold, Gentlemen and Skip Away. Formal Gold was 4-2 head to head over Skip Away, yet Skip Away won the other "award" for older horse. Seattle Slew romped over Affirmed twice, Slew was 2-0 head to head over Affirmed, yet Affirmed was "HOY." Both Precisionist and Turkoman both romped over Lady's Secret, yet Lady's Secret was "HOY." Bayern was 2-1 head to head over California Chrome, yet Chrome was "HOY." Star of Cozzene was 3-0 head to head over Kotashaan, yet Kotashaan was "HOY." Numerous other hugely subjective, very varied opinions and bias including Moccasin and Roman Brother; John Henry and Slew o' Gold; Nashua and Swaps; Capot and Coaltown; Personality and Fort Marcy; One Count and Native Dancer; and an endless amount more.

It's hard to say easy goer would been greater than kelso or, man of war but, who knows had he not had those bad ankles maybe he would have been the greatest of all-times. Why not just comment all that you want to & leave all of your endless comments on all of the videos, & not erase & delete all of them?? Nope, Totally wrong Travis West (aka sigscorpion, aka an endless amount of other yt names)! The illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill fully voluntarily admitted to Jay Hovdey of the DRF in 2002 that he administered illegal performance enhancing drugs to ss, including the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator drug Clenbuterol. Proof positive. But Harthill couldn't do so in NY because both himself and all drugs were banned in NY. The ONLY state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs - and also banned ss's illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill - was NY. Harthill was arrested & banned an endless amount of times in numerous states for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses. NY was the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs (and tested for all drugs as NO amount [ZERO amount] of any drugs were allowed in a horse's system on raceday) - and also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill. NY rules back then called for zero tolerance standards for all drugs with quantitative testing, and these drug rules were that strict by design. The NY zero tolerance policy during that era was because the drug test results would be a clear “yes” or “no,” without having to quibble about concentrations (amounts) in a sample. In all of the other states, almost all drugs were allowed & almost all of their tests were amounts/thresholds of drugs. Proof positive. When the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence was forced to run drug-free without any drugs in the Only State in the Entire Country at the time which banned all drugs - and also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill - ss not only got demolished by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer, but ss barely beat Le Voyageur (who never even won 1 stake race his entire career & whom EG obliterated numerous times). And as importantly, the illegal criminal vet of ss, Alex Harthill, voluntarily fully admitted to administering illegal performance enhancing drugs (the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator drug Clenbuterol) to ss. Proof positive indeed.

  • @traviswest9388

Nope, totally wrong. This is NOT hearsay, this is the complete OPPOSITE of hearsay. When the illegal criminal veterinarian of the drug-reliant sunday silence, Alex Harthill, VOLUNTARILY and Fully ADMITS and CONFESSES to illegally administering illegal performance enhancing drugs to the drug-reliant sunday silence, his voluntary full admission/confession are clearly and undoubtedly confirmed, verified, certifiable facts, truths and proof. Harthill actually CONFESSED/ADMITTED it to Hovdey/DRF. A full voluntary confession/admission carries ALL WEIGHT. Besides Harthill confessing/admitting it to Hovdey/DRF, there are the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. The ONLY state in the entire country during that era that BOTH BANNED AND TESTED for ALL drugs was New York - and as importantly, NY also BANNED ss's criminal cheater vet Alex Harthill. So the drug-reliant and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant ss was FORCED to run drug-free with no drugs at all (and without his criminal cheater vet Alex Harthill) only one time in one race in his whole career - in which he not only got crushed by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer, but ss barely beat Le Voyageur (who never won even one stake race his whole career) because ss was forced to run drug-free in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs and also banned the criminal cheater vet Alex Harthill. Plus, back in those days in the Daily Racing Form Newspapers Past Performances, the DRF published for every horse in every race OUTSIDE New York who was administered the powerful performance enhancing diuretics (Furosemide, etc) & powerful painkillers (Banamine, etc) and they were listed in every daily DRF. ss was listed as being administered the drugs, while EG was listed as NOT being administered any drugs at all. EG's owners were Chairmen of the Jockey Club & were the staunchest opponents of drugs & ran their horses without any drugs even when running outside drug-free NY based on integrity and practicing what they preached. I will quote verbatim from the 2002 Jay Hovdey DRF newspaper article: "Harthill, toward the end of his life, was BOLD ENOUGH to tell me how he illegally gave numerous horses (including Clenbuterol to Sunday Silence) illegal performance enhancing drugs. Sunday Silence's veterinarian Alex Harthill ADMITTED to illegally breaking the laws in enhancing his horses performances. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill ADMITTED to illegally using the immensely effective performance enhancing bronchodilator drug Clenbuterol regularly in the 1980's 15 years before it was approved by the FDA on his horses, INCLUDING administering it to Sunday Silence. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill introduced the incredibly effective performance enhancing bronchodilator drug Clenbuterol in the 1980's and illegally administered it to Sunday Silence, who benefited immeasurably by its immensely effective performance enhancing effects. The drug Clenbuterol has a similar effect on the body as epinephrine & amphetamines by increasing the production of epinephrine and noradrenaline, and thus significantly enhancing performance; Clenbuterol also thins blood & widens the vessels that carry oxygen, so the volume of oxygen in the blood increases and thus significantly increases energy, and thus significantly enhances performance; plus Clenbuterol dramatically reduces body fat by causing rapid fat burning. The drug Clenbuterol performed miracles for horses who made inexplicable improvements with major enhancements in performance. Some of Harthill's other favorite magic making performance enhancing drugs were Etorphine (infinitely more powerful than the aspirin-like bute), Banamine (5 times more powerful than the aspirin-like bute) and Sublimaze. The drugs Etorphine and Sublimaze are drugs that give horses such a sense of euphoria and well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration filed suit against Alex Harthill on 102 charges of possessing and using unusual quantities of controlled drugs, such as the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, powerful steroids, loop diuretics, extremely powerful painkillers and very strong amphetamines, etc. Alex Harthill and performance enhancing drugs have led to the destruction of integrity in North American racing. Harthill was at the vanguard of giving drugs to horses that were used to vastly enhance their performances and they were remarkably effective turning good horses into great horses, bad horses into good horses, slower horses into faster horses, horses with no business winning doing so, and causing horses to run far over their heads. Harthill was a vet who had stolen a 30 length lead in the race to discover drugs that would significantly move up racehorses and Harthill had no hesitancy in using whatever he could get his hands on. Harthill was a magic man vet practicing the dark arts of racehorse manipulation. Harthill was arrested many times in Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, NY, etc. for tampering, bribery and doping horses with drugs. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history." Besides Harthill admitting it to Hovdey/DRF, there are the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. Case closed.

Ed Bowen who I have the privelge of knowing has a liking for him too. Ed's favorite is man of war, that's a tough one to argue againts[laugh]! God bless man of war for giving us kelso[laugh]! Alot of greats came out of man of war, none like kelso though.

Oh, only 3 horses ever won the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup, kelsos' the only one that's ever done it twice of so many horses there have been. It's kelso, easy goer and, I forget the other horse. Again, too bad easy goer got hurt. He was a dandy.

If you're just looking at just the racing talent of the horse, yes Easy Goer was probably the second best horse of past 35 years. I really don't question Day's rides as much as others although the Preakness ride was god awful. He still came back on Sunday Silence in the stretch and had the lead, but lost it again. So when people say he moved to soon doesn't really apply. His mistake was turning his head to look at Sunday Silence. I don't what Day was thinking. I don't think horses think like that. Plus, no one said anything about Day in the races he won. I do believe though if you put a jockey like Cordero on Easy Goer, he may not have lost a race. He lost the Breeder's Cup Classic due to his handler's decision to run in the Jockey Club. I think they ran the horse into the ground. Who on earth chooses to run a mile and a half race as a prep race. You'll never see another three year old have the year Easy Goer had in 1989. Forget American Pharoah. He's great by today's standards, but honestly speaking; he would have gotten smoked if he ran in the 80's.

sl7293 Pretty easy. He won five consecutive grade ones as a three year old. As I said, just looking at the talent of the horse alone, he was better. He was more versatile and he was more accomplished. Racing is a team sport. Whittingham did a better job prepping Sunday Silence and the jockey... well don't get me started. Yes of course, SS beat him 3 out 4. Noor beat Citation 4 straight times. Was Noor better than Citation? Probably not. So what I'm saying isn't necessarily trash. I'm not some crazed Easy Goer fanatic either, but I saw him perform in person enough to say he's one of best horses I've ever seen run. Spectacular Bid is no. 1. I didn't see Secretariat.

Easy Goer stayed close directly behind SS...When SS moved up to the leader Pat Day followed him and went right by....Unlike the Classic where Easy Goer was sitting right behind SS but when SS made his move to the leader Pat Day sat still on Easy Goer and did not follow him and let SS open up and missed by a neck...Pat Day should have given Easy Goer a comfortable win in the 89 Classic if he did not "wait" all day...

Pat Day also sat still and waited on the far turn in the Preakness too. Go watch the 1989 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream in Florida where Easy Goer blazed extremely fast around the sharp far turn.

When Easy Goer broke Secretariat's 1 mile record by 1 full second running 1:32:2 he ran it on cruise control, in hand, effortlessly, at will, etc and ran the fastest mile of all time by any 3 year old. Easy Goer's 1 mile record still stands today almost 25 years later.

joe chrow You should have a clear opinion based on these facts: The fact is that the drug-reliant & criminal cheater doper veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss was drug-dependent & could not run drug-free without all of his performance enhancing drugs administered to him by his criminal cheater vet, as ss not only got obliterated by EG but ss also barely beat Le Voyageur (who never won even 1 stake race his whole career). The fact also is that the drug-reliant ss could not run on bigger tracks with larger 1 1/8m or bigger circumferences. The fact also is that EG was in front of ss at the 5/16th pole having run Only 1 3/16m & Before they had run 1 1/4m in this drug-free race. The fact also is the EG/SS 3-1 means as much or as little as all the scoreboards reading Noor 4, Citation 1; Beau Purple 3, Kelso 1; Cabrini Green 4, John Henry 0; Darby Creek Road 3, John Henry 0; Gallant Bloom 4, Shuvee 1 ; Akureyri 3, Pleasant Colony 1; Big Spruce 2, Forego 1; Damascus 2, Dr Fager 2; Formal Gold 4, Skip Away 2; Billy Kelly 8, Sir Barton 4 ; Star of Cozzene 3, Kotashaan 1; Summer Squall 4, Unbridled 2, & an endless amount more. The fact also is in the Drug-Free Test of the Champion Belmont Stakes Easy Goer killed ss, like drug-free wheat separating from drugged chaff, the drug-free cream rose to the top. Easy Goer ran drug-free in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs, which banned all performance enhancing drugs; while the drug-reliant & criminal juicer cheater veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss got exposed badly & romped when he was forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. The truth is the litmus test of a champion is running & winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; & during that era New York was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs. Plus, as importantly, New York banned & didn't allow the criminal juicer cheater veterinarian of ss Alex Harthill [arrested an endless amount of times for illegally doping/juicing an endless amount of horses] to perform his magic & juice the drug-reliant & criminal cheater veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss. The truth is ONLY no-drugs drug-free races were/are true championship races. Only the drug-free no-drugs races could/can be called championship races. No-drug races kept/keep the outcomes crystal clear. No-drug races are the only true tests of champions. That is integrity, honesty, fair play & complete fairness for all. The drug-free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer was the better horse than the drug-reliant & criminal juicer cheater vet Alex Harthill-reliant ss. All truths. And most importantly, Alex Harthill confessed to illegally giving illicit, illegal performance enhancing drugs to ss. I quote the DRF for the factual truths: "Harthill, toward the end of his life, was BOLD ENOUGH to tell Jay Hovdey of the Daily Racing Form how he illegally gave numerous horses (including Clenbuterol to SS) illegal drugs. Sunday Silence's veterinarian Alex Harthill ADMITTED illegally breaking the laws in enhancing his horses performances. In DRF articles in recent years & in the last few years of his life, SSilence's vet Alex Harthill ADMITTED to illegally using the immensely effective performance enhancing bronchodilator clenbuterol regularly in the 1980's 15 years before it was approved by the FDA on his horses, INCLUDING using it on sunday silence. SS's vet Alex Harthill introduced the incredibly effective performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol in the 1980's & illegally administered it to Sunday Silence, who benefited immeasurably by its immensely effective performance enhancing effects. The drug Clenbuterol has a similar effect on the body as epinephrine & amphetamines by increasing the production of epinephrine & noradrenaline & thus significantly enhancing performance; clenbuterol also thins blood & widens the vessels that carry oxygen, so the volume of oxygen in the blood increases & thus significantly increases energy & thus significantly enhances performance; plus clenbuterol dramatically reduces body fat by causing rapid fat burning. The drug Clenbuterol performed miracles for horses who made inexplicable improvements with major enhancements in performance. Some of Harthill's other favorite magic making performance enhancing drugs were Etorphine (infinitely more powerful than the aspirin-like bute), Banamine (5 times more powerful than the aspirin-like bute) & Sublimaze. The drugs Etorphine & Sublimaze are drugs that give horses such a sense of euphoria & well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration filed suit against Alex Harthill on 102 charges of possessing & using unusual quantities of controlled drugs, such as the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, powerful steroids, loop diuretics, extremely powerful painkillers & very strong amphetamines, etc. The drug Lasix is absolutely performance enhancing as well & also acts a diuretic making horses lose weight giving them a huge advantage while making them run faster at the same time. In a study of 23,000 races, Horses that received the drug lasix on raceday raced faster, earned more money, & were more likely to win or finish in the top 3 positions than horses that did not. The study showed a 6 length difference with Lasix than without. Another reason for the performance-enhancing effects of lasix is the acute reduction in body weight that occurs after lasix administration. Administration of lasix shows to induce up to 4% reduction in body weight within 4 hours. Because work is a product of mass, velocity & distance, that loss of this amount of weight has a significantly beneficial effect on the athletic ability of lasix-treated horses. Lasix-induced reduction in body weight increases the maximal rate of oxygen consumption, reduces accumulated oxygen deficit & rate of lactate production, & decreases the rate of carbon dioxide production of horses during intense exercise, delaying the onset of fatigue & increasing the oxygen going to muscles. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history." Besides Harthill admitting it to the DRF, there is the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. These are all true facts.

It's fun to watch Pat and Easy Goer. As his jockey, the two formed a solid team, and everything was a team effort. They each knew each other so well. Pat always knew about the great horse he had beneath him and what he could do. It is apparent here. Pat just stayed with the leaders, not going to the front. He knew the acceleration Easy Goer had, and just waited. Won by 8 lengths and second fastest time in the Belmont. The Gotham is the most interesting, as Pat holds him back, but in the short race, Easy Goer wants to go to the front, and pulls him to the lead. As he accelerates around the turn and passes Diamond Donnie in an instant, wins by 10 lengths, in a course record, almost a NWR, that beats Secretariat's NTR by a full second, I myself have never seen a horse run as fast as he did in the stretch. "A stream lined jet airplane", is a good description of his home stretch!!!! What a horse!!!!!!!
