1988 Belmont Stakes - Risen Star

Спорт

Only his father ran a faster Belmont Stakes than Risen Star did yesterday, and only three racing legends have won the race more easily.
Risen Star, Secretariat's best son, blew past Winning Colors after a mile and drew off to a tremendous 14 3/4-length victory in the 120th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Kingpost was second with Brian's Time third as Winning Colors, the popular filly who won the Kentucky Derby May 7, tired badly to finish last in a field of six.
Risen Star's time of 2:26 2/5 under Eddie Delahoussaye was the second-fastest Belmont ever, surpassed only by Secretariat's world-record dirt time of 2:24 in 1973, widely considered the greatest performance in modern racing history. Risen Star's winning margin was smaller only than Secretariat's (31 lengths), Count Fleet's (25 lengths in 1943) and Man o' War's (20 lengths in 1920).
Risen Star, who paid $6.20 for $2 to win as the favorite, earned not only the Belmont winner's purse of $303,720 but also the $1 million Triple Crown bonus for compiling the best record in the three classic races. He finished third to Winning Colors and Forty Niner in the Kentucky Derby, then won the Preakness at Pimlico May 21.

What a beauty! He so reminds me of Secretariat his dad and Bold Ruler his Grandfather! He runs like the wind! It was refreshing to see that he was hand ridden just like Ron Turcotte rode Secretariat to Triple Crown Victory in 1973! Perhaps Secretariat never duplicated himself, but he sure came close with Risen Star!

Risen Star was a great horse , if Louie Roussel would have trained the horse for more speed. He would have won the triple crown. This horse is top three all time does not get credit he deserves. I was at the Fairgrounds when this horse was running Shane Romero had the mount then Eddie Delahooussaye took over he said out of his mouth in the Kentucky Derby he did not know this horse had tactical speed he rode him differently after the Derby just go back and look at the race with Forty Niner he ran him down with no pace in the race from dead last

I disagree. He trained the horse beautifully. Horses arent machines, sometimes THEY dictate their own running style, and theres nothing you can do as a trainer to change that. Winning Colors just got away during the Derby, and ran a big one that day, and Risen Star wasnt at his best. It happens, and winning the triple crown is almost impossible to do. Louie did a great job with that horse.

Fans of Secretariat waited forever for a son who would do him some justice, and here they had one. Lasix did not help the line as it was sound. Mr. Prospector would some come to dominate the elite ranks as a sire, with Secretariat as a very strong broodmare sire.

Fillies carry five fewer pounds to level the playing field, to give them a fair chance against the naturally-stronger colts. It really ticks me off when they're said to have an "advantage" because of it! If this were really the case, there'd be considerably more fillies racing against the boys, and winning. Yes, there are beasts like Zenyatta, but I don't necessarily believe that size equates directly to strength.

In my opinion Risen Star was never recognized for his ability. Unfortunately people focus on just the horses who win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and if they don’t win the Belmont Stakes they’re disappointed. In this case I think we forgot about Risen Star’s accomplishments that year because he didn’t win the Kentucky Derby or sweep The Triple Crown.
