This was quite the project, quite big to me but small in other people's eye. As I was editing this, the audio managed to get offsync with the texts. something I cant fix.

    I happened to be airborne not too far when this occurred doing communication relays between the carrier and aircraft near Libya. As a few hundred other sailors also have I have a copy of the gun camera view from both aircraft as well as the entire soundtrack. During a briefing with the four aviators in my flight briefing room we found out one interesting tidbit. When the second F-14 was trying to take a shot and there was a comment about taking the shot the pilot responded that he did not have a tone. Turns out he did not have a tone because the volume was too low. Right after you hear that comment there was a tone. This was when the volume turned up. While flying our mission my crew did not know what was happening rather close to us. When we returned to the carrier to land (take a trap), we heard on the radio where the F-14's asked for a flyby. Then they commented they wanted the flight deck to see the two aircraft that shot down the MiGs. That's when we knew something was up. The gun camera views were sent to Washington DC in the clear and were intercepted by CNN. This is how the world knew what happened well before it was officially announced. This is also why the audio/video became immediately unclassified and a lot of VCRs were capturing the audio/video from the CCTV.

    Did the 14's have authorization to fire? Seems the audio had them in a "yellow-hold" from Alpha Bravo.

  • @jamesjohnsen2021

    @jamesjohnsen2021

    Жыл бұрын

    @@tsparks4133 A key component in any battle or engagement are 'Rules of Engagement'. This is true for any military branch. In this case the ROE stated the F-14s were supposed to try to disengage with the MiGs. This occurs when you hear the pilot state they were turning 30 degrees one way then another. Right after they disengage you hear the pilot state that the MiGs had re-engaged them. There is a distance between the F-14s and aircraft carrier that also prompts the F-14s to engage. So we hear them talking about the disengagement and reengagement as well as the distance between F-14s and MiGs. To confuse the situation we hear Alpha Bravo, who is the Admiral commanding the battlegroup, state weapon status is 'yellow-hold'. Note that AB is an officer speaking whatever the Admiral says to say. The Admiral was not really on the radio. Timing of the weapon status was bad. We call that as throwing a hand-grenade into the cockpit. It causes a lot of unnecessary confusion. The ROE tells the pilots what to do without someone miles away not fully aware of the tactics and situation adding confusion to the situation. The engagement is a matter of minutes with lots of maneuvering and working up tactics to defend the battlegroup. The humous side of this part of the audio is that within seconds of AB saying 'yellow-hold' you hear Fox Two. This indicates a sparrow missile was just fired. It also tells you that the F-14s aircrew were following ROE and ignored the 'yellow-hold' radio message.

    @@jamesjohnsen2021 That sounds plausible, thanks for the reply. You're likely aware ROE in later engagements were/are heavily controlled/dictated by E2 and AWACS. Of course, if someone fires, you're cleared hot in most cases.

    I worked on Tomcats when I was in the Navy. I think it was the baddest ass fighter ever designed. They ozzed bad ass. I loved the way they “hunched” when they shot off the cat. When they were operating they gave the appearance of authority. Very intimidating to an adversary. And the jocks flew them as if they were an extension of their being. Add the Phoenix Missile and you’ve got pure heat! Great video! The F-14 Tomcat patch was a tomcat feline with two tails standing in a boxing ring leaning with one arm on the ropes. I live in a rather rural area. Last month I was driving by regional airport here (out in the country) and I saw a fighter jet ready for takeoff. I was going about 60 mph when I passed it, sitting on the runway about 100 yds. from the highway. Hey, we are way out in the country here. Not something you see often, although since we have an extremely long runway (alternate runway for the Space Shuttle), you see some interesting things doing touch and go's. I immediately turned around in the middle of the highway and went back to see what the heck that was! I first thought it was an F-111, being swing-wing and a high single tail, but it had double exhaust - and besides, there are no F-111's in operation anymore, as far as I have found. I later found it was a Mig-23. Olive green, no markings that I recall. Somebody else had seen it take off from the same airport a couple of weeks before and taken a picture. So apparently there is a Mig-23 residing in backwoods East Texas and someone is flying it fairly often!

    If you watch Ward Carroll video the former RIO on an F-14 on this incident he basically was saying Collins the RIO was trigger happy. Launching the second sparrow before the first lost radar tone. Basically saying Collins was sloppy. Then RIO Enright was telling his pilot Cook to switch to Sidewinder meaning FOX 2 meaning it was still in Sparrow mode. Then Cook got the message and switched to Sidewinder. So as Ward said the view changed to HUD mode which you hear that buzzing noise meaning the Sidewinder has a heat signature for you to fire your Sidewinder.

    Good question. It's not easy being an REO on the F14. You have to choose which type of radar to use and then which area of the sky to scan and the scan pattern. Of course, having the AWAK around would help to give them headings to scan and altitude to scan. I use to play Fleet Defender and it was fun just being the REO.
