1988 Fourtrax 250R Rebuild

I decided to finally make the plunge into owning and restoring an old Fourtrax 250r. I grew up in Southern Arizona and I used to watch people ride these quads all over the mountains near Nogales. It was always fun to watch them race the Suzuki LT250's.
This is story of rebuilding a 1988 Honda Fourtrax 250R. I installed a new ESR310 kit, along with a 40mm carburetor and Elka shocks. I'm not much of a mechanic but I do the best I can!

    The 86/88-89 Combo motor was a early 2000's mayby even starting in 1998 motor trick. Due to crank lengths and getting more pressure with race gas domes and billet enlarged o ring gaskets you could squeeze a good bang ouda a 250R motor that way with stock parts,,mostly.

    I truly believe that the '04&'05 trx450r was the true game changer. Yes the YZF450 is epic, but good-ness... Try working on that thing. It's a nightmare of over-engineering. The TRX250R was absolutely amazing.... and it still is. So fun and still competitive. But those 4stokes are just faster.

    @@RetroRiders_250R_Magazine Absolutely!! I love the smokers.. the Smurf juice is.. special.. That rpm and feel is completely satisfying. It's a completely different level. But the four strokes just make more. They just sit on the dirt and grab. It's almost no comparison. Two strokes can barely do, in three gears, what a four-stroke does in one. Honestly, they should make a completely different class for two-strokes. They're night and day.... as a generational 250 two stroke rider... when I eventually switched to 450... it's not even close. So much power and acceleration...and top end... and traction... and just crazy. They should definitely separate them.... Like what Red Bull did.

    @@insanetaco98 For sure!!! However, it's a trade of. Yamaha is as simple as Legos, and is easily maintained and configured. But factory models of the same year.... Suzuki makes crazy power, Kawasaki has great suspension... Honda does both. Not the best at either, but is good at both. Yamaha, is the generic version.... Buy some shocks at CVS. That is not an insult. I have nothing but respect for Yamaha. Affordable, strong, and easy. I mean seriously, the 426 was a game changer. It essentially invented the 450 class. But 20yo hondas are still in the fight, winning against brand new Yamahas. That OG TRX450R changed the game. It was never the best, but was so good at everything, it set the precedent for sport quad racing. Every company took notice and adapted.

  • @insanetaco98

    @insanetaco98

    @Matt-416 both my yfz and my dad's trx are 05s and the yamaha was faster even back then. Hell my carb model yfz keeps pace with the current model. The yfz is much more track oriented than the honda out of the box but in mine and my old man's hands they both feel comparable. Nothing generic about the yamaha. In fact looking at the changes from 04-05 to 06+ both yamaha and honda borrowed ideas from eachother. The kawi and suzuki while short lived may have had handling stock but couldn't touch the other 2 once they've all been through the race treatment. Not to mention the faulty fuel systems and tip over sensor issues those machines had. Honda will get credit though cause if not for the 400ex debuting in 99 we'd still all be on 250rs with aftermarket frames and 426 power plants
