Biggest game of the 80's

At the beginning of the season, I thought the Michigan game was one of greatest games I'd ever seen (and I still do). Then this game happened and it changed my life as an Irish fan. This was an absolute war!

Ok but when the refs aren't completely 100% for the FKN IRISH.MIAMI WOULD BE GIVEN A TD INSTEAD OF A FKN FUMBLE. ON WHAT PLANET IS THAT NOT A TD OR ATLEAST A FIRST DOWN....AND THEY CALL IT A FUMBLE. LOL🤯🙌🏻

Michigan would win the Rose Bowl. But such tough pill to swallow knowing we lost to Notre Dame and Miami by a combined 3 points. Fourth quarter leads in both.

The 88 season was magical!

Just to your point - four of the first five picks in the NFL draft became legends: Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders! It was an amazing year for college football!

Still probably the best college game I’ve seen.

Absolutely. Definitely the greatest midseason game ever. Doubt you’ll ever see a game this meaningful ever played on October 15th again. This was effectively the ‘88 National Title game. The last two & a half months were anticlimactic.

Always loved the ‘Catholics vs Convicts’ series. Two teams at the top of their games. The hype was as much fun as the games.

The defending national champions vs that seasons national champions! Brent Musberger was the best. CBS had Musberger, ABC the legendary Keith Jackson, and NBC had Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy. How amazing was college football in those days.

ND no longer admits prop 48's ( Tony Rice). last championship QB @ ND.

First regular season loss in 3 years. My goodness Miami was a force of nature back then. RIP Howard. Bear would have been proud of what you built in Miami. I bet he had never heard of that small private school.

I remember Jimmy Johnson, saying they gave away the game, afterwards; then Holtz said, the only thing Jimmy ever gave away was a check, in restaurant

Most exciting football game I have ever seen...for Miami fans, probably not so much, but it was pure entertainment.

I saw that game on TV in 1988 when I was 32. It was pandemonium, even on TV. Now, 67.

After Miami scored to make it 31-30, Dave Wannstadt walked up to Jimmy and said, “Let’s kick the extra point and get outta here.” His reasoning was that the Canes would be well positioned to beat the Irish in a bowl game on a neutral field. Johnson’s ego got the best of him, and, you know... It would’ve been interesting to see a rematch in the Fiesta Bowl. I don’t think Notre Dame wanted any part of seeing the Canes again. This is just “what if history “, not sour grapes. Lou Holtz and the Irish richly deserved that 1988 championship. They played a tough schedule, beating Michigan and Miami at home and undefeated West Virginia and USC on the road. The Irish beat SC so bad they cost Rodney Pete the Heisman. But still, wouldn’t Catholics vs. Convicts Part 2 have been awesome?

Cane Fan: There are times when it's best to take a tie. Miami turned the ball over 7 times, were robbed of a TD on a Cleveland Gary "fumble" and then received a gift with Rice's turnover. After scoring on 4th down, I think you just say that after all of that, take the tie, and, like you said, position yourself for a National Championship rematch with Notre Dame. Classy comments saying that ND deserved the championship. They did for sure. But I think Miami would have won a rematch by at least 2 TDs. But congrats to Notre Dame. The 1988-89 Notre Dame teams were among my favorite teams ever.

@@tmarsh0307 I do not know if Miami would of won a rematch. Miami always struggled agianst smashmouth football teams. Penn State and 87 Fiesta bowl was a perfect example of that. In college football Defense does win championships.

I’m a die-hard canes fan, I was 14 years old that year and went to the first game in the OB against FSU and saw them narrowly defeat a REALLY good Arkansas team. I saw this game at home, even though we lost, it was still the greatest college football game I’ve ever seen. A battle of two giants that went on for numerous years.

He still is. He felt his team got cheated, not just the fumble but several other holding and PI called that were not called. But he should have known better. Miami was the most hated college football team then..maybe ever and ND to this day is still a media darling.

I have always thought Johnson should have went for the tie. This was the best ND team in 11 years, they were at home.Miami had many turnovers and still could had tied.They would had retain the No1 spot and would have beaten West Virginia.

I don't blame him for going for the win. There were several undefeated teams at that point and it wasn't at all obvious that Miami would end up #1 with a tie.

I read somewhere about a controvrsial Miami fumble at the goal line in the 4th quarter. It didnt look that controversial. He cqught the ball, made a "football move" and then had it knocked loose.

If it was instant replay like nowadays Miami would of been victorious. Horrible call and refs was in favor of Notre Dame. It’s always the refs against us in big games. Ohio State 2001 Fiesta Bowl they got us again with that infamous pass interference call. Don’t be biased bruh us Hurricanes get it. 🙌🏾

Andre Brown also dropped that touchdown pass in the 4th quarter. The officiating cut both ways. Get over it. Notre Dame was the best team in 1988. Michigan, Miami, Southern Cal, and West Virginia. All top 5 teams when the Irish beat them.

Funny. They did a survey and Miami had more Catholic players than ND did lol. ND deserved this one. Miami beat the Hell out of them the other games.

Miami wants to bitch and complain about that so called fumble in the 4th quarter at the Notre Dame Goal Line that cost them a 1st and goal and most likely the game( Yes indeed it was a very bad call). However the Hurricanes had a total of 7 turnovers in this game( 4 fumbles and 3 interceptions). Most of them occurred inside Notre Dame territory. I don't care how talented or good you are; you will lose 99.9/100% of the time when you commit that many mistakes in a game; especially on the road no matter who you are up against. If Miami doesn't commit a single turnover in this game, they win this one rather easily.

That's why I think you have to take the tie. You have to think that after 7 turnovers getting out of there with at least a tie would have been the best thing to do to position for a possible rematch with Notre Dame.

There was a strip sack in the first half that was clearly a fumble that ND would have scooped and scored on that was ruled an incomplete. Miami got calls too.

Incredible, Steve Walsh had 3 int + 2 fumbles and the game was this close. Miami should have gone for the extra point. It would have been a shared national title with ND.

Would have been different had Walsh not given the game away.

It evened out by the end. I never realized it until the ESPN documentary, which dealt with the play in detail, but the Andre Brown TD in the last minute on 4th and 7 actually hit the ground and should have been ruled incomplete.

Saw a documentary where they showed Miami players replays of Andre Brown's touchdown at the end clearly showing he didn't catch it. That was 4th down, Notre Dame would've taken over. So your point is moot.

Maybe it’s cuz I’m a Canes fan, but I didn’t realize Andre Brown’s TD hit the ground. So I guess that terrible call was evened up by Cleveland Gary’s non fumble. Both calls would’ve been reviewed and overturned today

Saw Tony Rice as a freshman qb in the South Carolina AA Upper State Championship Game. The game was Woodruff vs Lugoff-Elgin, easy to see he was a special player.

"Aren't they something!" Actually, he never had control of the ball but the ref joyfully signals a touchdown which is why I stopped follower ing this "sport."

Had they played better in the first half it wouldn't have come down to the botched call on the fumble or the needed two pt conversion! There's always gonna be woulda's coulda's and shoulda's in games, but the only result that counts is the end one

Miami was bad ass take no prisoners at that time - would come out and punch u right away and knock u off to the extent most of the time not getting up off the canvas! It was the same thing in this game they had done in the '87 Fiesta Bowl! I'm a Penn State lifer (since '80-'81 when I was in grade school) and they (Miami) let us hang around! My point is and it stems from Jimmy Johnson warning his team (don't let the game come down to the officials is what he'd told them before kickoff)! And instead that's exactly what Miami did (they never at any point had enough control)! Yes they deserved that call to be reversed, but in hindsight had Miami from the opening kick been Miami, the outcome would have been very different! But the woulda's coulda's and shoulda's don't win football games!

Nah. But the ncaa should have done Miami v ND part two but nobody wanted the canes to win again. It took 7 turnovers and ND won by 1. They would have beat ND on a neutral field.
