1987 Talking Jill Repair Tutorial - Finding the Source of the Problem

Ойын-сауық

Hello. So I tried my hand at making some sort of intro? What do you think? It’s so primitive but I’m not great with editing tools lol.
So I just did an unboxing video of a new Jill I got with a broken arm. When I put batteries in her she was completely unresponsive. So here is a video of what my next steps are to determine if she can be saved or not. By no means at I am expert, this is just the process I go through to determine the problem. I was lucky this time and was able to bring her back to life!
Let me know what you think in the comments, or if you have any other questions.
Thanks for watching! 😊

Thank you for showing the doll's inside mechanical gut's. I used to take apart, fix, & put back together alot of mechanical doll's by mattel, toybiz, & playmates in the 90's & early 2000 era & even now recently when I get other doll's. Mostly done with retracking down my older doll's so don't do this as much as I would like to anymore but it's fun restoring the older doll's from the 80's, 90's, & 2000 era in general. For me to tell if the mechanical doll had an issue I could alway's tell because the mechanics wouldn't sound right or hear something rattling, buzzing, the one time I heard beep, beep, beep then the doll died before restoring her & getting her running again. Alway's an interesting experience lol~ 🤣👍

Thank you for watching and sharing all that cool info! Nice to meet a fellow tinkerer of these old dolls. I find it fun and soothing working on them, and yet a complex challenge as well. I’ve worked on a few talking dolls but there’s so many more past the 80s I’ve never even seen! Did you ever try working on a Jill?

@@cricketandcorkysclubhousef8686 No. Surprisingly I never saw a Jill until maybe a few year's ago on KZread. I saw alot of other doll's in the 90's in thrift stores. Now I go to virtual thrift store (ebay) lol. Doll's by mattel, playmates, toybiz, & kenner were my jam back then. I recently got into doll's by MGA, Spinmaster, & Hasbro in the past few year's. If I'm not mistaken didn't hasbro do alot stuff with playdoh in the 90's? I noticed with alot of my newer baby alive doll's there's a connection with them eating playdoh & also made by hasbro~ 🤔🤷‍♀️ The doll's I was familiar with from the 80's particularly in the 90's as a kid: CareBears, Rainbow Brite doll's, Magic Nursery doll's, I didn't have those ones particularly they were at daycare so I was familiar with them. The one lady my mom worked with at the dry cleaners back then gave my mom a bunch a 80's strawberry shortcake tiny doll's along with the Strawberry Shortcake doll house. I had no interest in it at the time. The older girl of this lady who was around 16 when I was 7 went totally ballistic on her mom & me the fact that her mom gave away her strawberry shortcake doll's etc & this girl demanded them back. I told her she didn't need to throw a hissy fit & could just have them back because I wasn't that interested in them anyway's. Then she got mad at me for saying she was throwing a hissy fit which she was & quote on quote who was I to judge her... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️✌️

Jill has so much mechanical engineering and is scary when you look inside. It's good that you have ideas of what is going on with her and can take her apart. Would be good if you can have the circuit board tested and mended. Thank you for sharing what your doing with her. It is so interesting.

Thanks Tony! Sorry I didn’t get a notification you commented. 😢 Yes Jill is so wildly complex. I was lucky enough to have several so it was less stressful testing and tinkering. I know if someone had one Jill it would be ultra stressful working on her. It still blows my mind that this was made as a toy for children. Thank you for watching and I always appreciate your kind words . 😊

Well this comment is for Shadow side B but your comments are off. I have been waiting on this one. Thank you! An observation. Doesn’t Laura sound older in the audio here compared to tapes from the first wave of tapes? How many years do they cover?

Haha it’s ok I got them back on. KZread has this other thing now though where it stopped giving me notifications of any kind letting me know someone commented. So I’m sure there’s dozens of people I never answer! As far as the time frame? I don’t think it goes past a year. Maybe they ended up having to get a different voice actress for Laura?

I got a jill, the french canadian one but sadly the seller broke her arm by dropping her from a chair just before sending it to me and it’s very hard to fix 🥲 i also thinks i have the only jill in France maybe a family who moved from Canada or a very rich family who imported the toy for their child 🤔 my tape and player are in very good condition so i will probably make a video of the full tape since all the video i have seen of this tape are from damaged tapes or player.

Like on your french tape video the sound feels very distorted, on mine it’s like very clear and stable even my grandmother was impressed by the quality of the sound for such an old toy 😅

Nice! So glad there’s a Jill over in France being cared for. That’s definitely sad about her arm but don’t feel too bad as it’s common. I’m working on some parts with a friend and I’m trying to convince him to open up a little shop so others can buy them. If so then you can get a new joint for your arm! 💖
