1987 Suzuki Alto walk-around

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Fun times at Bruce Henn's Garage. This is either the only, or one of maybe...I'm not sure... ten Altos in the United States right now. I only got to walk around it but I love it! Bruce will be working on this little gem for a while for another client. Thank you so much for letting me sit in it.

Man, a 550cc Alto Works was probably the funnest car I've ever owned. I had a 1989 RSR. Ended up bending the frame after failing to properly negotiate a S turn. The 550cc Alto Works are worth a small fortune nowadays though. They're near impossible to find in Japan. Whoever bought this car got really lucky.

We have tons of these in India, owing to a long standing JV between Suzuki and Maruti (an Indian manufacturer), ours weren't turbos, but a 3 cylinder, 796cc engine was standard. I have an Omni, the Indian version of the Suzuki Super Carry. Same powerplant, and since mine is a 1994 model, the engine was a full import from Japan. 20+ years on and 200,000 kms never had its Engine opened up. Curious to see what this car becomes :)

The Japanese love their boxy little cars and I do too. I never thought I'd say it, but I love the 1st gen Scion xB. I was dreading purchasing it, but it met my budget and my needs. As I laid in bed the night before I sealed the deal, I had an epiphany: the xB is actually the perfect car. It is cheap so it doesn't have extra gizmos adding to it's mass or to distract from the driving experience. It is a box so it holds several people, things, or thing-people (?) comfortably. It has a stiff suspension, is low to the ground and a manual so I can scream at the canyon in my new town "I came here to drive this car for all it's worth and chew bubblegum". And that's exactly what I do.

This car (yup this particular one) is called the "Maruti Suzuki 800" in India and it changed the Indian automotive industry. This was the most popular car for years. I have a slighter newer model (interiors are the same with slightly more modern exteriors than the one shown in the video). It is 17 years old. It is a 5 door hatchback, with a 6 valve 3 cylinder carbureted 800cc petrol engine. It only has 37 hp but certainly feels like it has more than 37 hp anyday, due to the power delivery nature I guess. Moreover, it also handles pretty well. I just love it.

That car was sold here as a Chevy Sprint and later became a Geo Metro. I had an 86 Sprint without the turbo. As slow as it sounds, with the a/c on it wouldn't maintain highway speeds. But it did get 49 mpg. The three cylinder would vibrate so bad it eventually walked out the bell housing bolts and the engine freed itself from the transmission.

Memories... I drove a n/a 800cc one in the Netherlands for my internship. Same body style. No... I wouldn't be seen in one so it wasn't mine. But in the USA? Oh yeah!

+John C All Japanese cars that have been licensed to drive on the road have flares as it's a legal requirement (which I think is still in effect but not sure). Not all imports have them though sometimes they get removed.

+Lextube Yeah, it's still required, but they don't have to be less than two years old anymore. There just has to be one in the car. The laws, for keis at least, just relaxed a bit recently. 3 years ago they made sure the rear wiper worked and that it sprayed washer fluid, but when I got it checked last year, they didn't even look at it.

Mitsubishi UK imported some Pajero Evolutions in ( which we called Shogun), they sold all 50 & then had to issue a recall because they forgot to remove the road flares, not legal in the UK unfortunately.

It's the same as a Maruti 800. We've had those Altos in Europe as well, so there are left hand drive versions. But I don't remember them being turbocharged, this is probably due to the kei car rule in Japan, where the engine must have less than 600cm³ displacement or something like that.

I had an 87 turbo Sprint until 2010. I sold it double what I paid used for it in 1992. That 3 cylinder had a ton of guts. Reliable. Fast. Fun. 155 tires worked alright even though there was torque steer galore. Mine was a 993CC. What is this? Mine was 70 HP.

tell you something interesting, this car was extremely famous in China, it kinda developed chinese vehicle industry, and still manufactoring (yes, today, suzuki Alto, they are still manufacturing now, 2016 model with 1L 3 cylinders N/A engine with 71hp, and around 8100 usd). it is good in fuel efficiency, and cheap. its has a 5door version, for most Asian people body size, enough room for 4 people sit in it. in fact, the first car of my family was a Alto, but I can't remember it was a auto or manual transmission.
