1987 Jeep Cherokee Axle Yoke, Driveshaft, and Extension Housing Replacement

Big thanks to James Wallace for leaving such a detailed and informative comment about doing this differential yoke replacement. Not only was it easy to understand but gave me confidence to know that the job wasn't all that hard if you pay attention and do it right the first time. Hope you all enjoy the video!

Hey!! 😀 Glad to see the driveshaft worked out Cody! It's a shame you had to hunt down another tail shaft but sometimes it doesn't go as planned. Looking forward to the next video my friend. Take care and happy wrenching 🔧🔩

Thanks Zane! Ya it was a long shot but it all worked out. Also I think re- using that pinion nut with the red locktite I used will be ok on the long run. Glad to hear from ya Zane and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!👍😀

Awesome job and video. Sorry for the slow response but my internet has been out for a long time. I didn't see if you used a new nut or threadlocker but if you didn't it will probably be OK anyway -- just keep watch on it for awhile and if it loosens up you may want to retighten it with threadlocker or a new nut. Thanks for the appreciative comments. It was really easy to compose because I have done that job myself! We both had the same diesel truck and now we have similar aged jeeps.😀, But wait! . . . there's more: If you're ever struggling with a breaker bar having only six positions and none of them will do (60 degrees between available positions is a long way), all you have to do is take the socket off and turn it 1/4 turn -- no more -- and put it back on the breaker bar and you will have a bunch of inbetween angles you didn't know you had. That's because the socket has six sides and the breaker bar has 4 and you do the math and come up with a lot more positions. Try it!

Thanks again for the real helpful advice James! It was real handy when it came time to tighten that pinion nut back on. I referenced that comment you sent several times while I was underneath the Jeep. I took your advice and bought red locktite and I agree that it should be ok. Took it for a little test drive and got it all the way up to 65mph without any issues. Everything is coming together and besides the steering being a little loose from age it’s a fantastic driver!😀👍

Thank you! This whole Jeep project has gone off without a hitch so far and am really pleased with it so far. Not much more needs to be wrenched on before it becomes a daily driver👍

I think your driveshaft is fine. I think the shaft is balanced alone and not to the vehicle. That would be labor intensive at the factory if each shaft had to be run out to get the balance while on the vehicle. And I may be all wrong. I’m good at that. I’ve had three XJ’s and a MJ. They are good driving and very dependable. I like to watch you detail so now that the weather is improving - git er done!🍿

Great to hear from you Mr. Randall!! That’s good to know. It makes perfect sense what your saying about the driveshaft because they made almost 3 million of these XJ’s and I can only imagine the extra cost it would take to balance them individually to each Jeep. Glad to get some advice from another Jeep guy. Thanks again and take care👍

Hey Cody, I can't believe that old yoke just slid off. That rarely happens. Good call though on not reusing that old one. Sorry I haven't been commenting lately. I watch on TV most of the time and have no way of commenting. Good job getting that severely neglected Jeep running again!

Ya I guess I got lucky! I agree, I couldn’t safely reuse that old yoke. It was a guarantee that it would break a U-joint again and who know what else would break if that happened. No worries I’m glad to hear from you and happy to see you making videos again! Take care Jason!👍😀

Brother! Awesome video… I have a question…I am having issues removing that big nut holding onto the yoke. I’ve blasted it with WD40, PB, even using a pipe for more torque…nothing. Lol any suggestions?

Thank you! Ya they’re on there tight for a reason🤣. That’s a hard one. I’m no professional when it comes to this but if you have a torch of some kind to blast it with a bunch of heat to maybe help loosen things up. You could also try a heavy duty impact wrench if you or someone you know has access to one.

Ya that yoke was really wore out there was no way I could reuse it and feel confident about it so it was the safe way to go. Not much more work before this thing becomes a daily driver!😀👍
