This aesthetically looks great, all black PG and plastic and headstock. Very Charvel-esque clean look. Plus amazing Japanese manufacturing quality and great 'San Dimas' custom looking finish, dayyummn...

This is the second guitar I buy after watching your videos. Thanks a lot for showing the good stuff. Anyway, I just got my "whitish" contemporary yesterday. It has the back of the neck painted black, looks exactly like duff's bass. I was surprised to see that the body under the pickguard is routed for 3 humbucker sized pickups. I had never seen that.

I have a old Epiphone Strat (yes, Epiphone Strat) from the late 80s with the Kahler 2700 Series trem which is so fantastic. It has an EMG 81 bridge, 2 different EMG singles in mid and neck positions, 1 vol, 2 tones, 5 pos. switch. I replaced the neck with an ebony mighty mite and boy does it ever play fast and sound heavenly for any types of metal. After I took off the trem and board to paint the guitar, I took apart the Kahler to clean it up...that fucking thing took me awhile to figure out cuz you can adjust the string width, move each saddle back and forth, up and down and make all these little fine tuning adjustments, which I needed because of the new compound radius neck I put on the guitar. Kahlers are the best IMO.

Hey, nice review, mate. Love those licks at 8:30. I owned and '86 Contemporary Strat for a short time, same green color. I really regretted my purchase after about a month and ended up trading it for something. I am now playing a '79 Stratocaster that I picked up about 10 years ago. That's the one for me.

@SoAwesomelyFunny Very nice my friend. That's a great price. It's just such a great axe. So much better than all my other Strats. It's amazing how much they can differ from one to the other. But this on has "IT". Good luck on the auction!

@ravenshield56 There are a fair amount of the different kinds of the Contemporary Stratocasters, but this is the first of this one that I've found. Some look like typical Strats, some have those funky whammy's and some don't have a humbucker or coil splitting at all. So, this was the only combination like this that I've seen.

@hansolo989 Yes you can. 100%. You just can't get those HUGE pull ups like you would be able to get with the body routed out on like the Ibanez Jem etc. Then again, if you pull that sucker too far back, you'll bust all of your strings at once. lol So, you can easily just adjust the 2 screws in the back that hold the spring claw to find a happy medium that you can deal with to split the difference for just the right amount of dive bombing and the pull up range. Takes 5 minutes to set up.

@bmiranda2645 You are dead correct my friend. This is the best sounding Stratocaster I have all together. Some have it and some don't, and this one has it in spades. So, this is a keeper and I'll be selling all the other ones when my "retirement" comes up in 13 years, but something that sounds this great will be one of the few I keep. So, it will be this Strat and my original, beat to hell pink paisley one and that will be it for the Strats that I'll be keeping. SUPERB!

@SHERIFF8311 I just checked it out. That's the one for sure. Does yours sound that huge too? Just wondering if I got lucky with this one. I have a bunch of the '85 and '86 ones that had the variations I showed, I thought that they were something until I grabbed up this '87 and BOOM! It just fills up all the sonic spaces that the others leave out. I love that guitar.

This guy seems to know about them, www.chrisguitars.com/contemporary-strat.html Looks like your 86 was a Contemporary Deluxe with the System III trem and fancy nut contraption and Schaller humbucker, while your 87 was the "lesser" Deluxe with the System II trem and more typical locking nut. They also had a Contemporary without the "Deluxe" moniker, and it had the System I trem, and no pickguard. They also made very interesting Squier versions, some with Gibson scale length exported here, some with crazy colors that mostly never made it out of Japan. brochures.yokochou.com/guitar-and-amp/fenderjapan/1983/en_05.html

@stockholm17 Thanks much! I wonder what it was that you didn't like about the Contemporary Strat. I've got my 1979 anniversary Strat and it's heavy as all get out, but not a great guitar. I like the Contemporary stuff a lot better. Then again, I could've got a bad '79 too. Very low output pickups. I do like the large headstock though. Wish it was a 3 bolt. I guess I'll have to buy another '79, hardtail this time, and see if I can bond with it. Any reason to buy another axe. lol

@eddiefender100 They charge an average of $160.00 to ship to the USA. Not bad at all. It costs $400.00 to have guitars sent from England over here. They offer all wood types. I like Basswood just as much as any wood, they all sound the same on electrics, and the lighter the better. Of course, they still use ash or alder and even poplar if they need something with the grain showing.

@deeduncan08 I'll be more than happy to help my friend. If you have any pictures that you can send me to groovydjs at AOL I'll check it out and solve the mystery for you. There were a LOT of different Contemporary models other than the ones that I collect. Some of those have the normal headstocks and look like any other Strat other than simply the added Kahler. So, it could very well still be a Contemporary model. Most of them were from 1985-87.

The locking clamp after the nut was a bad design feature of this series. They put it right on the HM Strat but these just look classier without the gaudy headstock logo. I had a HSS Contemporary Tele that I wish I'd kept.

Hi Scott, Have you ever opened and inspected the guitar to see exactly what kind of pickups came stock with this guitar/and or were changed? I read online somewhere that these came outfitted with something called a Dragster Humbucker, which apparently wasn't a super high output hum bucker. Another thing, do you find that tuning stability suffers after some whammy abuse due to the strings not being locked at the bridge, and the behind the nut Kahler locknut?

  • @groovydjs

    @groovydjs

    7 жыл бұрын

Yeah, I've had enough of these to be able to tell you that it's 100% original and correct. The Kahler is always unstable. Not sure why they ever made them non locking on the bridge end and of course....that horrible design of the locking nut behind the regular nut......always binds at the regular nut.

Groovy Music Lessons That Dragster sounded great as a single when you split it with the coil splitter. How do you go about dealing with the tuning/whammy issue? Does doing big bends throw it out of whack as well? How do you deal with it?

I'm sure I read that Floyd Rose or Kramer claimed infringement and made Fender change it to the '87 version non-clamping nut. So, the '85-'86 side-clamping Fender locking nut was Fender's attempt to skirt the FR (down-locking) nut patent, and Rose said 'uh, no you guys. You can't steal my idea.' Floyd sure got that one detail right, though and at least in any case the designer got some credit and compensation (either directly though whammy sales or Kramer guitar sales or "Licensed By FR" stuff that runs the gamut from excellent to very poor quality.)

OK, seen another of your vid's with the 27-5700 emerald mist colour guitar. You seem to have the idea that the first number of the serial number tells you the year. So an E5 would be 1985, E6 would be 1986 etc..etc. You are not the first to make this mistake. Sorry to say this but it has no truth to it at all. The only way is to remove the neck and see if there is a date there (some times there is, some times there isn't). The part of the serial number that dates the guitar is the "E" which means it was made some time between 1984/7. Yeah it sucks. I know. Now, OK, OK I know what I just said, an E7 serial does not mean its an 1987, but it probably is a 1987 build, as the Kahler trem systems where added on mainly UK market Contemporary's in 1987.
