This video always brings a tear to my eye. I grew up there in the 70s and 80s. It's nothing now but a memory.

I'm fortunate enough to remember when our town looked like this. Now we have nothing but a Wal Mart and a few other stores...

Holy Hell. Look at the Giant Coal Miner walking up the mountain with his pick ax and Miner's helmet at .42-.46. Eerie thing.

I worked at The PigglyWiggly at the edge of town I’m in 1977 and some of 78 I stayed with my Grand Parents in Prater Creek. The Pig was Special place we had a Great Crew stocking shelves. Later in 1979 I came back to work in Radio first WNRG then The Great WMJD Rock Station My name was Mike Owens during the Night shift .. Burger Queen Request Line was a hit at night if anyone remembers? Then I was the Morning Dj? Grundy has a special place in my Heart, Ever since I was kid I knew Grundy from visiting Barney n Lena Owens from the 1960’s on!

I'm turning 47 next month and I remember getting excited to go to the Piggly Wiggly to use my cookie monster card to get a free chocolate chip cookie and play the arcade games at the entrance where you turned in pop bottles. I was around 7 or 8 during that time, around 1980 thru 1984 when I got older and got my first Atari video game system and stopped going. I'll never forget growing up there all the way until I turned 19 then moved to Roanoke because the jobs was dying in Grundy at the time.

I remember when Grundy looked like this. I've since moved away. I was there last year, and I cried when I saw that my home town was gone. Its so sad that my children will never see where their dad grew up.

I lived in Big Rock in the 50's til early 60's and Mom and Dad would take us to the movies every month or so in Grundy. I think there were at least three movie houses back then. Lynwood. Lowes and another? Or am I mistaken. Always loved that.

Beautiful area. We were just there last w/e visiting Breaks and the VA Elk herd (from Shenandoah Valley). Looks to me a push to get the economy going in the Vansant area. Seems the coal company tried to give back to the area too.

No they tore down all of it...the courthouse and bank building and the little service station are left...the parking building is now a "community center"/ movie theater...the JR High and PV Dennis Elem. are now a law school...the high school is still there for now though. All the buildings are mostly gone, they built a Walmart complex over where the train depot was after blowing up most of the mountain over there. Even the old road from around Little Prater through town is changed. Look up other newer Grundy videos and you'll see.

I do remember that Walmart. Back in the 90's I use to meet a friend over there after college, but that was so long and 3 states ago. lol Thanks for filling me in. I hate when these small towns disappear. If it's not drugs, it's something else killing them.
