Grew up riding around in a diesel escort. We had a diesel Ranger as well. That sound brings back memories...

Bought one new (wagon) in 86. Loved that car. Put roughly 140,000 miles on it in 2 1/2 years (salesman with big territory) and all I ever did to it as normal upkeep and struts.

What a great car had 1 brand new in 85? Mercury Lynx what a great car drove mine for a decade.

Man, I watched this on eBay and was sad to see it sell. I ended up getting my second dream car a week later.....now I want to make it a diesel. :)

Great little old car. I remember the two escort wagons and taurus wagon my family went through as a kid.

I remember the day when my parents brought home a brand new 1984 Ford Escort wagon. It had a diesel engine. It was a great car and lasted at least 5 trips across the US. It died for good in 1993. My parents scrapped it about 2 years later. The Ford Escort is the only car my mom ever drove and it became the first car I ever drove as well. We still have a 1999 Escort wagon which runs just fine for a 15 year old car, but it's showing its age with deterorating paint and rust.

My parents had an 1984 Escort Diesel as well. Nothing but trouble, but I learned how to drive stick in 15 minutes since it's hard to stall a diesel.

That's right, the diesel didn't show up until 1984, and even then, it could only be had with a five-speed stick.

what do the rear shock towers ,on the inside look like for rust ,and the floor pans look like for rust. any oil in the coolent bottle.

Great little car man, I've had many gas powered Escorts and Tempos but no Diesels. I want a Diesel on eBay that's rusted out to put it's engine in a mint-condition '82 EXP that needs an engine. Probably never happen but imagine what a cool commuter car, probably 50 MPG given the lighter EXP body. I had a Mercedes 300-D Diesel and it ended up being a nightmare to maintain. The rest of the car was worn out but the engine was still strong at 220K.

My mom had a red 1988 escort pony good times good times and in my opinion the best looking Escort

Your car looks super clean. Never was a fan 9f red interior though. Whats the shift pattern on there? I have an 84 Lynx Diesel and the reverse is far left and up.

If it's the same european engine (1.608 or 1.753 cc), it's not Mazda.

Totally different from the English version

I had a 84 ford escort diesel. Worst car I ever owned. Cost me $8400 new, after the 1 year warranty I spent $4,000 to keep it running. When it was 3 years old and I traded it in the dealer told me that he knew about this car and could only give me $400 for it in trade in. I said thank you. I would have paid him to take it. It still looked new and only had 60,000 miles on it. I did get 53 mpg on the highway.

+Larry Hoffman - Thank you for sharing that, I was actually wondering if they were junk. I thought I knew everything about just about every car but I wasn't aware that they made an Escort diesel until I found one for sale on Craigslist a few moments ago. I was somewhat intrigued with the idea until I read your post...perhaps flushing money down the crapper would be a better use of money.

+Fucknuts It went through 3 aluminium heads, 3 starters, valve problems, diesel fuel leaked. The engine was made by Mazda. According to Mazda, Ford came to Mazda and asked to use their engine. Mazda shot them a price, Ford asked them if they could make it cheaper and sell it to them and Mazda said sure. So it was made by Mazda but wasn't the same engine that Mazda put in their car.

Larry Hoffman Oh wow, really? I was doing some research last night about the diesel Escorts and they were touting the great Mazda motor...it may have been an article from when these cars came out but I can't recall at the moment because I came across several sources. Your explanation makes sense as to why it was junk. You know, I used to be a die-hard Ford fan until about 20 years ago...then I realized all the corner cutting and poor quality in their products. Ford sucks!
