I just picture Ad execs from Wisconsin and France on a Hunter S. Thompson-esqe road trip to the American west, and this is what they came back with, and they have no memory of even shooting the ad when they got back to Kenosha.

This is exactly what a French convertable, mid 80's commercial should be! Dancing, Mimes, B-Boys, neon and subtle word placement. Btw, mimes are sexy.

My favorite part is 2:41. 2 guys pulling a convertible, Amazing how the special effects were back then, They totally cut out the tow truck. WOW. Oh yeah, I also have owned many Alliance Convertibles, when they work right they are great cars. LOL

It sold about 650,000 units. In its first several years it sold as fast as Renault could ship the drive trains and AMC could build them. They were very high quality for the 80s (Alliances and Encores were Renault 9s and 11s, which were bulletproof at the time), but for some reason Renault never considered a distribution network for parts, so they were expensive and sometimes very difficult, to get fixed when they needed work. And gas prices dropped dramatically, going under a dollar a gallon. Once repair trouble became apparent and the desire for a small and efficient car waned, sales basically dropped to zero. It's coincidental that at the same time, Renault decided to pull out of the American market. Their pro-AMC CEO was assassinated, and the new guy didn't see the same potential in the US market and was opposed to spending to remodel the woefully outdated factories in Kenosha, and improve small car profitability, after having just built the newest and best auto plant in North America in Brampton to make Jeeps. The combination not only doomed AMC as an independent company, but had convinced their new owners at Chrysler that they only wanted Jeep and the former AMC's small car production was expendable.
