The wood on the door panel is in fact real wood. In case you didn't know the M110 motor in the 280SE has mechanical lifters that require a periodic valve adjustment.

The square and round key do the same for the doors and ignition. The round one is the valet key. Notice the missing line down the middle. The valet key only works on the doors and ignition, not the glovebox and I believe the trunk

It's very unusual to see an S-Class with manual windows even in Europe. Some very early UK cars had manual windows, they were largely launch cars from 1981 but electric windows were very quickly added as standard equipment at least in the front in most European markets as a lot of people rather baulked at paying the equivalent of £40,000 for a car with manual windows, especially something as high class as the big Merc. It looks like this car only has the sunroof as optional equipment and possibly the metallic paint, though I'm not sure if metallic paint was an option on the S-Class as I have been told that they came in two or three solid colours and metallics as standard, the only optional extra paint colour being black, though that may only have been in the UK. Certainly it is very unusual to see an S-Class in any solid colour other than black though they do look rather good in signal red, but the vast majority were painted in metallic colours from the factory...

Electric windows were an option, The equipment levels in Europe were sparse. In Germany Mercedes were not seen with the same prestige that other markets gave them, they were well engineered workhorses and used widely as Taxis . Mercedes dealers made their money on the options list , you could easily spend £10K on options such as air conditioning, leather trim, electric windows, electric sunroof, Blaupunkt radios , alloy wheels, front arm rests, rear headrests, metallic paint, the list was endless. I remember seeing early 126`s with only a drivers side door mirror as the passenger side one was an option in 1980 when the car was launched. BMW were the same.

That's a Euro spec car not a Federal US car, it has the small bumpers rather than the larger impact bumpers mandated by Federal law. From the specification, not even having electric windows in the front I would guess it was originally sold in Germany or Holland. The standard specification on Mercs of that generation wasn't exactly generous but everything was beautifully engineered and built, which is why it used to be said that the only things that would survive a nuclear war were cockroaches and old Mercedes. Unfortunately now that definitely isn't the case. I don't think the 280 version was ever sold in the US, I believe the base (effectively) engine on Federal cars was the 300SD 3.0 litre turbodiesel 5-cylinder with Federal petrol/gas engines all being the V8s at least until 1986 when the S-Class got its facelift and technical upgrades such as larger brakes and the flat face alloy wheels...

+Mike Utoober Yes, I'd lay odds that it was originally bought in Germany by someone who brought it back to Canada with them when they moved back. It's unusual and a nice change to see one still wearing its original steel wheels and wheel trims as a lot were ordered with the optional mexican hat alloys and even more have been fitted with a variety of tastes and qualities of alloys over the years too but this one looks almost totally unmolested. It would certainly be a cool and unique car to own in the US and Canada with the 280SE being a model that wasn't sold there and with it being a Euro spec car. You do need to be careful with these, though, as they can be horribly rusty though this one looks in the video to be free of any of the usual warning signs. If the price was reasonable I'd be inclined to snap it up, but don't fall into the trap of thinking it will be a cheap car to own being the basic model, even with the 2.8 litre twin cam six under the bonnet mated to the auto box you'll struggle to get much more than 20mpg, these things are biblically heavy, and keeping it maintained well with top quality parts is utterly critical for long life, though these are largely simplicity itself to work on as everything is so well and thoroughly engineered, but with that done the car could easily last indefinitely, even though the 280 engine isn't regarded as being one of Mercedes absolute best they are extremely strong and with the timing chain changed at about 150,000 to 200,000 miles and probably a set of valve stem oil seals at about the same mileage they will easily pass 500,000 miles without problem. If they're neglected though they quickly tend to become rattly in the top end and smokey and a full rebuild can easily swallow several thousand in parts. You might find it amusing to know that back in 1985, despite being the top of the range, these cars never came with a radio as standard equipment, they had the speakers and aerial/antenna fitted in the factory but Mercedes left it to the buyer to select their own choice of radio which would be fitted by the dealer, at extra cost. Mercedes used to recommend only Blaupunkt and Becker units, which is what most had fitted and plenty of cars still have their original units in place. Of course a European unit probably wouldn't have been any good in Canada due to the different radio frequency range used, hence the newer unit fitted to this car...

Manual sunroofs hasn't been available since the w123, which had standard electric sunroofs here in Sweden at least. Manual windows was more common though, along with lack of other equipment such as ac.
