1985 Honda ATC 250R Engine Tear Down - This could be great, or go very horribly wrong...
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
So... have you ever procrastinated and not done something because you were super worried that you'd screw it up because you had no idea and no experience in doing that thing... so you just kinda let it linger for about 2 years. Well, that's me and this 85 ATC 250R Engine!! I knew that I had to split the cases and do all new bearings and seals on this thing... and I just had a ton of anxiety about it!
Well, a couple people have been asking me about it and I knew it was something I needed to get to and finish up... so... I jumped in! So far, so good! The engine cases are in the hands of my trike buddy and MASTER craftsman Mike Palmgren at Vintage Motorsports. He's going to vapor hone the cases, do some selective powder coating, and install all new Honda OEM bearings and seals for me. Then it's just up to me to put it all back together properly! No stress!! lol
I consulted a couple videos on how to do this before I jumped in... there is a really good one by Michael Sabo on this topic that shows what to do pretty clearly. My buddy Travis Gisclair also does a tear down video and was very helpful too.
We'll find out in a couple weeks when I get this motor back if I was paying attention when I took it apart!

Thanks man! It was a fun process and I definitely learned a lot!
I did my 85 250R motor in 2019. Full teardown and all new Honda OEM bearings and seals throughout although I did put a HotRods crank and rod setup in the lower for expedience but I kept the OEM crank and rod that came with the motor. There's a build thread on 3WW about it and it was the first motor I ever tore completely down and rebuilt every possible item inside and then successfully reassembled. I thought I was in over my head but it ended up being the most rewarding thing ever and was very satisfying. Great video as usual, Preston

To add......I also love woodworking, so I would totally watch a video about building that table
Best way to learn is to tear is apart yourself! That’s how I was tought and it’s helped me in many ways working on machines

You and me both brother!!! She'll be pretty!!
You did a lot better than I did the first time splitting the case. I had to get a new piston and rod assembly for my 87 250 Big Red. Well....I removed the output shaft that goes to the final drive and drive shaft first and heard all the gears fall down inside the case!!! . I had to do some studying of the Honda service manual as to how to put things back where they belong. I finally got it and now is all well. Another challenge was replacing the crank pin and rod , that can be a little tricky. Bought a set of V-Blocks used a dial indicator stand and made a special plate just so I could press the old crank pin out and install the new one, This can be over challenging for some, but it is possible to do at home. I love what you're doing with the 250 R, It's going to nice ! 👍

I've heard about people pulling out the output shaft on Big Reds and having that experience... I think that, and other horror stories rattling around in my head were what kept this motor sitting on my bench for 2 years! I go to pick it up on Saturday and I'm VERY excited to get it put back together! Thanks for always watching my videos!
I got my 86 ATC250R back in 98 and besides a Hinson basket/Barnett clutch upgrade in 2005, I only ever did top ends until 2016. I was terrified to split the cases (especially since it was a perfectly running engine at the time). But I took my time, didn't let myself get frustrated and by the time I was finished I had not only gotten comfortable with the process, I also learned how to port and polish. I am now to the point where I can pull an engine, split it down to nothing, reassemble it and reinstall in in about 6-8 hours. About to do so on my 85 this weekend! I must say though...having all of the proper/specialty tools and items like a rotating engine stand makes an enormous difference.
I have to rebuild my 85 250r motor as well. Seeing you jump into the unknown without dissaster makes me feel alot better about tearing mine down. Great video. Thank you

Thanks brother! Yeah, it wasn't bad... but it definitely took me longer than I show in the video. I'm hoping it goes back together smoothly too!
I would recommend oil on the threads of the flywheel puller, and all the nuts and bolts during final assembly

My spare 85 engine has been sitting on a stand for 5 months due to being a little hesitant to split the cases. I’m good tearing it down to replace the crank seals and have done it a few times and replaced the clutch but the trans is what scares me lol. Maybe this vid will give me confidence to finally replace the crank bearings and get it back together. 2 of my counter balancer brg holder bolts broke and case threads are stripped so that’ll need to be repaired also. The previous owner didn’t take care of this engine. My spare that’s in it now is in excellent shape and very low hour.

This has definitely made me feel better about the process. I've got another motor I picked up along the way that I need to do this same thing to. I think when this one goes together, that one may come apart. It'll be fun! Hopefully you get into yours and it turns out great.
I'm excited to see the trike finished and looking mint!👌💸

I have faith in you. I wouldn't dare myself but you're FAR more capable mechanically. That machine is going to be GORGEOUS! I need to get to scheduling my local small engine wizard to redo my 86 TRX250R engine. Then I'll finish any cosmetic things. I'm pumped just thinking about it.

Thanks brother! I have a good feeling that I'll be able to knock it out! It's probably going to come together pretty fast too!
It would be Awesome to see you do a collab Engine Rebuild on the 250R with Michael Sabo. He is definitely a wealth of knowledge tearing engines apart and re-assembling. Would boost and promote each others channels as well! We enjoy watching your videos and you teaching your Kiddos some wrenching skills. Cheers from Honda Riders in Oregon.

The first time I split the cases on a 250r, I was terrified I would screw something up! Just took my time and tried to keep everything together. After a couple times it was super easy.

It's gonna be a nice bike, just take your time. I'd be glad to come help you assemble it when the time comes if it would make you feel more comfortable, not that you are not capable of doing so yourself.

I appreciate that offer man! I will keep you posted, but I think I'll be able to get it figured out. Hopefully it goes together without any complications.
I just done the same thing to a 1973 Atc 90 this weekend, I made one motor and trans out of three motors and then I wired it up and started it on the garage floor.
