In this video I start the semi restoration of a 1985 Honda ATC 250SX. I finish the video up with a maiden ride in the snow.

    Be careful using regular oil, the clutches may start to slip, that why motorcycle oil is recommended.

    Yeah, actually I had a disclaimer that use to pop up during the oil change that said. “Ignore me, use motorcycle oil” lol. Not sure where it went.

    Great video Honda ATC 250SX 👍. You sound like me bought another Honda ATC last year just now getting in the shop lol. It's the thrill of the hunt snagging these old Honda ATC's up cheap and getting them back to running smoothly again. Thanks for sharing.

    Enjoyed the video and many of your others. One note about your oil change. Honda recommends NOT screwing the oil fill cap down when checking the oil level. Just let the cap rest freely on the threads. You may need to recheck your oil level.

    Thanks Rick! I own so many engines it’s tough to remember which ones have the dipstick threaded in for measuring and which don’t. Honestly it was at the highest point within range. “Close enough” That’s between you and me though 😉. I hadn’t turned the engine over yet so I knew it would go down once the oil filter got its fill. Thanks for your correction though.

    Throttle opened or closed for compression testing, it doesn't matter. It may be off a few points one way or the other. Good work, really liked the video, subbed and I'm hunting for one myself.

    I had a pop up disclaimer for the oil. Did it not pop up? Was supposed to say “Use motorcycle oil for wet clutch and don’t screw the oil dipstick in when checking oil level.”

    1. Oil dipstick is not threaded in to check level, just dipped in 2. K&N filter oil is for gause not foam filters

    How many bolts and what kind hold on the gas tank and back plastic I bought one but it’s missing the bolts for that and what size is the nuts for the muffler studs

    🤔 that’s strange. The one I bought came with the petcock and a blue colored fuel line. Both were the same inside diameter as the carbs brass nipple. You might want to look into a different petcock.

    What would I do if I want to put a bigger mud tire on the front of the atc would I need to get a special tire I just bought one so I'm new o this whole three wheel game

    I've restored a few of these old bikes 4 Honda's and 1 Yamaha. Looking for another one but people are asking stupid prices now. I get it there rare but they're not that rare that people are asking $1500 for 1 with a seized engine and completely clapped out.

    How did you end up getting the exhaust apart? I have to get mine off in order to get the engine out and it’s rusted together good.

    I used a pry bar as a chisel. Hammering on the back of the pry bar pushing the muffler off the header pipe.

    Just replaced all the plastics on my 85 350x with aftermarket, about $450 for all of them, looks good.

    The big red exhaust on eBay works. But you have to cut the tab on the frame supposedly and it will bolt right up. They talk about it on 3wheelerworld.com

    Typically yes. If I am doing a lot of welding I will use gloves. On quick welds I sack up and take it. 😂

    It’s not pretty. There are two ugly big holes for rack mounts. And I’m sure shipping would be pricey. I don’t need it, but not sure it’s worth the hassle of shipping.

    You're supposed to use motorcycle oil for the additives the clutch needs, not for the engine itself... Regular car engine oil does not have the right additives.

    Weird people out there. Why would you want to use vaseline when you can use bearing grease that under heat will melt and flush down with oil? Do you know the chemical reaction of vaseline when it's mixed with oil and exposed to heat? Noo!!
