Palombi In A Stunner
Ron Palombi Jr. watched his opponent, Mark Fahy, pick up the 7-pin and said to himself, "It's all over." Fahy, who had rolled to three previous victories, needed only six pins on his final shot to ensure a tie, seven to lock up the win, but left a shocking 1-2-7-8-10 combination.
The 21-year-old Palombi jumped on the new opportunity and drilled home three game-winning strikes for a thrilling 208-207 win, his first PBA title, and the $16,000 top prize in the $115,000 Tucson Open.
Prior to his final shot, Fahy had bowled superbly, first ousting Randy Stoughton, 227-174, then veteran Ernie Schlegel, 191-180. Fahy hit high gear against second-seeded Pete Weber, starting with eight straight strikes for a 255-213 win.

The PBA tour was best when televised by ABC. Sure miss those days.
Mark Fahy is my brother-in-law. He has retired from the sports, he is doing fine, and still lives in Chicago area. I was just telling him that I have found some videos of him on KZread. And he was wondering, if anyone still has video from 1986 MASTERS or 1983 MILLER HIGHLIFE OPEN. I told him that I will try to find out. I am so glad you posted this! This is still one of the most amazing finishes to a PBA tournament ever! There was some classics in the summer of 1984....that whole year was an amazing year for the PBA and awesome finishes!

We need to remember Mark had an incredible run of victories on TV matches during this time. Very tough player.
For the Tip of the Week segment they used the introduction that was used during the 1982 season. I don’t know if they used the 1982 version of the introduction in any other 1984 telecasts, but I’m guessing that this tournament was a rare occasion.
This is bowling before there were sharks, chameleons or scorpions.
Ron Palombi Jr has bowled amazingly well in his 1st telecast as he threw the 3 strikes to win in an amazing finish in the Tucson Open

now that was a clutch trip in the 10th for Palumbo
When he was 39, Palombi had an accident with a snow blower, taking off the tip of his middle finger, and breaking his index finger.
Boy, Mark Fahy had some odd leaves in this tournament! In the second game he had the 1-2-4-8-10 followed by the 2-4-6-8-10, and then in the final game the 1-2-7-8-10 on his closing shot. Wow!!!
It is not easy to win 4 games in a row against your fellow professionals in tough lane conditions. As the old adage says, it ain't over till it is over. Clutch bowling at its finest in the final.

I've seen this match maybe three times over the years and every time I watch the end I feel worse. Fahy bowled so well only to lose it on count at the end. Bowling is the cruelest of mistresses.

Patrick Burns Fahy got awful breaks. I cannot believe he didn’t carry some of those shots late in the match. Unreal.

Still, a failure to hit the head pin to seal the victory had nothing to do with luck.

Fahy was a little too pumped up on his final shot. Heartbreaking finish for him.

Fahy's 10th frame was probably the best ball he threw the whole tournament and throws the 5 behind the 7. He strikes there and he wins.

Andrew Phillips Holding a slim lead throughout the title match, Morin struck out in the 10th frame to force Laub to do likewise. When Laub left a 10-pin on his first attempt the championship and $11,000 first prize went to Morin. The 35-year-old Cleveland pro also earned a spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions.

Wow....what a way to lose
Great 10th frame finish from Palombi to ice it but you have to feel terrible for Fahy, worked his ass off to come from the opening match to get there' got hosed with back-to-back 7 pins in the 9th and 10th and leaks one wide and gets five on the fill. Carries either of those 7s it's over.
In all of my 35 years of practicing & going bowling with the pro-am bowlers, look at what Nelson Burton Jr. "tip of the week" mentioned at 37:10 about cleaning the bowling ball with "Lighter Fluid???" And "Rubbing Alcohol???" They get away with this method in the 80's. That will ruin the bowling ball & it's harmful. Nowadays I use baby wipes to clean out the dirt & grime then wipe it with a towel to make it clean & dry. Hard rubber balls are a thing in the past, now I use urethane because of tough oil lane conditions. If Bo tells me to use bad substance on my bowling ball, I would not ever bowl again with him at a pro-am. That's a chemical substance in which is illegal to use it with a bowling ball. Wrong tip Bo. 🎳
