Beauty game. I love old hockey. No divers, no chintzy penalties. Just hockey played by men.

The franchise that ultimately ended up replacing the Quebec Nordiques, the Colorado Avalanche, vs the Detroit Red Wings put THIS rivalry to shame..Avs-Wings were savage games, playoffs or otherwise..

I think the Flames Oilers equalled this rivalry...or certainly came close...but that was in the 80's...not so much now.

One thing I can't stand is when an announcer can't or won't admit he could be wrong. At 30:08 they show a replay of that offside call and I don't think that puck came out of the zone and Robinson RARELY argued a call unless he was sure he was right. Redmond was positive it came out and even when they showed the replay, he acted like it did in fact get out-but I don't think it did. You be the judge....

This of course was back in the day when teams had to play out of their divisions to advance to the conference finals (the first round being a best of 5). This is where most of the rivalries were built back then. Habs had a dismal reg season and were very average. In fact in this playoff year 6 teams with losing reg-season records made the playoffs. Other than the Oilers in the Smyth, the best teams were mostly in the Patrick and Adams divisions and they beat the crap out of each other trying get out of their divisions...not to mention that a number of the best teams were out after the first round. This playoff format always pissed me off...not the the current one is great either...they should go back to the balanced sched and a 1-16 inter-conference format. Division driven schedules are meaningless and boring. Quebec beat a much better Sabres team in 3 straight in the 1st round. Isles just squeaked past the Rangers in a crazy overtime period in game 5. Habs came close to going the final this year with a very average team and ageing stars. Up 2-0 against the Isles and going back to the Forum, the Habs would collapse and lose 4 straight. I think this was the season Greztky scored at least one point in his first 51 games...61 of them goals.
