CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Winston (John Hurt) learns about war and control from Emmanuel Goldstein's book.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
1984 is the second film version of George Orwell's cautionary novel. Though the events described by Orwell did not come to pass in the real 1984, the film's producers maintained a level of verisimilitude by shooting the scenes on the exact dates described in the novel. Otherwise, it's the same basic story: Winston Smith (John Hurt), a bureaucratic flunky living in the totalitarian state of Oceania, breaks the law by daring to fall in love with Ministry of Truth worker Julia (Suzanna Hamilton). Attempting to escape, Winston and Julia are tracked down by the Thought Police. Both must be "re-educated" into loving the State -- and by extension, the shadowy dictator Big Brother.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1984)
Cast: Pip Donaghy, John Hurt
Director: Michael Radford
Producers: Al Clark, John Davis, Robert Devereux, Simon Perry, Marvin J. Rosenblum
Screenwriters: George Orwell, Michael Radford

NINTENDOSH No, WW3 happened in around 1952/53 & at that time, WW2 weaponry was still being used by the post-ww2 forces on both sides & they are still manufacturing & using the same weapons as before, much like how the USA used the 1911A1 from the 1920s until 1985 & the British using the .303 smokeless round from the 1900s until 1957, with the various Enfield Rifles, too. They didn’t have the budget to make live-action war scenes, featuring the Eurasian Army markings, etc, so they used WW2 stock footage instead.

Its probably represents the people of oceania revolting against capitalism(in which they were in handcuffs to the bourgeoisie) and exchanging it for "socialism" where they are free. Though it ironically in Orwells eyes is a representation of the people still being trapped by the bourgeoisie but with their handcuffs formed from the within themselves rather than physically from the outside.

People like these are completely missing the point of the book. Orwell was not condemning any one party, rather, he was condemning totalitarianism as a whole. Hell, the party division and the bitter rivalry between them was something he warned about, with the Two Minutes Hate and the perpetual war. The loyalty people have to these parties is also like the fanatic loyalty people in the novel have to INGSOC. So yeah, he warned us about that too. In conclusion, put right and wrong over political parties.

I think they missed an opportunity by not including the scene in the book where he was whispered to into his ear, and he immediately switched the enemy which Oceania was at war with as if nothing had happened. And the posters everyone had put up immediately before the rally depicting the "Old Enemy" were torn down by the same crowd which put them up. And everyone was convinced agents of goldstein put them up. Reminds me of how irl when politicians or influencers switch their opinions 180 from where they were previously and pretend like nothing happened. And everyone following them moves with them. Conveniently meaning that they can never agree with their opposition so that both sides always stay opposed together. Because it'd just be so tragic for the two sides to admit they have a common point.

One book I would highly recommend reading in conjunction with 1984 is The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt. It maps out in the most basic level the lengths and means by which a totalitarian regime will go to achieve its objectives of total control. Right, truth, freedom, liberty, and all standards by which a democracy defines itself will be the first casualties. They promise a glorious future but only the naive and gullible will buy this. Sadly there is oftentimes just enough to grant them this wish and not understand the consequences. The film (and the novel) show us a possible outcome of this dangerous ignorance. We are currently standing at that crossroad, but it won't be the last time.

The essential act of modern warfare is the destruction of the produce of human labor. A hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. In principle, the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and it's object is not victory over Eurasia or Eastasia, but to keep the very structure of society intact.

1:47 This is such a impractical salute. You can preform the normal salute and the Roman salute with one hand but with this you need both which looks stupid when marching and is a mess when you have a rifle or anything you need to carry, as shown here.
