1983 Pocket SCRAMBLE LCD GAME - Faint Display - Quick FIX
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi, in this 'tea break fix' I look at a broken 1983 Grandstand Pocket SCRAMBLE LCD game. It was sold as spares or repair on eBay. The issue is the display is marked, and very faint.
Let's take it apart and see what is wrong.
I hope you enjoy.
Vince :-)

Wow, I remember when that blue mat was new (and you couldn't stand the smell of it!). Look at the state of it now. A casualty of many, many repairs.
The stamps were stamp books available from a manual machine from outside most large post offices, a real blast from the past.
My first Scramble experience was the Grandstand Pocket version, I absolutely loved it at the time.
The battery door fix was perfect Vince. I love it when left overs fit just right in other projects. 10 outta 10 mate.
Fantastic fix Vince.great to see things come back to life properly when you’ve finished them
What a relaxing fix and the trick with the old polarizer to use it as a battery door is quite clever.
I used to collect loads of these pocket video games as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s. Most were systema make. Lovely to see you fix one. I have an old donkey Kong and similar issue with display. Now I know what to do.
Nice water and fix, I particularly liked the resourcefulness shown with the battery cover!
Brilliant, no tea but a fun time before bed time is not to bad. Thank you!

I agree
Very nice fix, nice to see this kind of games are still around in working condition :) It's same age as my Q&Q King Kong LCD game, which I got as a Christmas present in 1983.
What a great Quick Fix! Right up my Ally I have been hoping to do one of these LCD scramble games or ages. Smart idea to use the iPad polariser. Another Great Vid!
Got the same game and my battery cover is also missing. Love the video and loved the game back in the day.
I made a battery cover for an game and watch with a card of supermarket😁good video Vince🤗.
Master stroke using the old polariser as the battery cover! Love it 👍
Lovely to see such an early (yes i know there were 70s portables too) portable brought back to much more decent state.
Nice job Vince!
That’s impressive. Didn’t know that’s how that screen technology worked!
Nice , I just love those old school handheld devices 🙂
Nice fix vince
Great video x
I really love your videos ❤️❤️❤️
I had that game as a kid, was a lot of fun but got challenging quite quickly !
Vince, my hero
Excellent video. I just got one of these and the top glass layer of the lcd , has scratches and some type of stain on the inside of it. Is it possible to replace it?
The music that played when you were cutting out the new polarizer made me think my phone was ringing :P
I sold one of these a few months ago on ebay, in a bit better condition that that one, but it had quite a faint display too.
Awesome =D Nice fixes there - like the battery flap solution =D
Great work vince :))))
I have fond memories of the Spectrum's version of Scramble... called unwittingly "Penetrator" oh how us young teens mirthed about that one ;) I've got some different stuff coming up, have started building up a OO railway, got two old Hornby engines including one pannier tank identical to the one you did a while back and some bits n bobs, waiting on some tunnel ends and a Hornby suspension bridge kit and armed with a bucket, loads of newspapers and ready to go wallpaper paste (papier mache), some chicken wire and me airbrush and see if I can't build a decent layout :D Oh and some builders spray can foam, all the folks I talk to on this say that stuff is epic for much on a layout.
such a nice clean up!
Oh COME ON! Only 10 minutes??!! :D greetings from Poland :)
Especially liked the polariser battery cover
If you look at the edge of the polarizer, it looks like the faulty polariser isn't original and has been hand cut. Would be interesting to see if it had been cut on the wrong angle originally
great video 👍
Hi. After seeing your video on the Mayflash Magic-NS adapter I bought one. I have a Thrustmaster Ferrari 458 Spider for Xbox One. For some reason, my Nintendo Switch thinks that the wheel turning is ZR and it doesn't register the brake pedal. How can I fix this?
Question: do you keep the items that you get or send them back/put them back on ebay
:) nice one Vince!!
Great little video, and do I sense an ifixit sponsorship coming soon 😀
Grandstand made a series of these pocket LCD games - they all shared the same plastics. I still have my Pocket PacMan (the plastic is yellow), only reason I don't still use it is the batteries, also it's not a very loud alarm...
I have a display that is near on non visible and there looks to be dead pixels. Its a hot tub control panel display and i think its got moisture in. Im currently drying it out but it looks very sealed. Have you ever fixed something like this.
Hi, in my Xbox one controller my right trigger doesn’t work up until 100%, is it possible to change it so that it works from 0-50% rather than all the way to 100%?
I've made battery covers from DVD cases, scoring it to make bends if needed...
WOOAAHH THATS EARLY 20'S GAME. THOSE DAYS
Straight from the past 😁
good job!
Wow ! So many Stamps ! No battery cover ? 'Dubious Engineering' replaced the polarizer from a couple of Nintendo Game + Watches recently They were also at a 40-50 degree angle ?!?!
Hi, would it be possible that you can repair some of my retro games (80’s LCD ones)?
That folky tune sounds like Slade. Nice.
I wondered if there was anything in the Japanese writing on the PCB - which reads Space Crusher (スペース・クラッシャー / Supe-su kurasha) .Have a google of it, I couldn't find anything much in English, but there's a few images of this handheld in its JDM glory.
Think Scramble was the first handheld i ever owned was a great game at the time which i kept safe at the bottom of my Gola sports bag to and from school
In America, we call it post code or zip code, either works 😊
nice new vid!
You know at some point one a these tea break videos is going to have a major problem that's going to cause Vince a long fix.
My choice of tea is Yorkshires "toast n jam"... just nice :D
In the US everytime I buy on ebay there is a good chance I see the same thing with stamps. From 70s-80s. I think they buy them cheap or have them laying around. I even bought some old Canadian stamps to send a few envelopes to canada.
I used to have Mini Munchman which was a similar size to Pocket Scramble. I might still have it somewhere...

Mini Munchman was a little smaller than Pocket Scramble with silver buttons and vertical game orientation. Pocket PacMan was the same game as Mini Munchman but in horizontal orientation and was in the same sized case as Pocket Scramble. HHH
Vince, you should try and find a faulty drone to fix
Nice this video
Was it a iPad polariser? How much was it?
What is the background music from?

Yes. I would love to know, too!
Top tip when putting on things like the polariser, use a credit card to push it down, that gets far fewer bubbles

Hey Vince, love the videos. Would you be interested in taking a look at an old pocket watch? The hands need to be relumed and I don’t think it’s keeping time. I’d be happy to cover shipping.

It’d be more fun to see what Vince could do with it. I bought it several years ago and it’s just sat in a box. And yea, I would relinquish ownership to be able to support his channel.

It’s an old Harman 7 jewel BERET 227383 Swiss made. The alarm works if you position the arms over the hour set for the alarm, arms move mostly freely, winds but you have to hold the watch upside down and give it a slight jiggle to get it ticking. As soon as you turn the watch over it stops ticking. Think I gave $30 for it. Seeing a couple online listed for $50-$75 range. But again, if Vince wants it for a video, I just need a PO BOX and I’ll send it over the pond.
Vince was a DJ at 3:12 😂😂😂😂
I was born in 83 crazy to think it’s 38 years old where do the years go
I got something off ebay but been trying to contact my mate Vince so he can repair it 🤣 COME ON VINCE WHERE YOUR EMAIL ?
Oh Vince mate you would do amazing things with a 3d printer
Black Sharpie Pen would tidy that screen surround out a little.
Nice 👍
A few minutes touching up the label with a fine black sharpie would improve the overall appearance of this handheld quite a bit.

🎶 Pass on your postcode, you're not properly addressed without it 🎶
"And now for a look at your art in the gallery..."
I remember 1/2 penny stamps and pound notes! What can you get for a quid nowadays? *shakes fist*
in the US we call them postcodes, postal code, and zip code
The Display is wavy on the right side.
👍👍👍👍
👍
That turned from SD to FHD

is it me or is the screen leaking?

looks like its leaking at the bottom of the screen

was my first thought as well, but its edge is too defined and the mountains have lighter shades of its color, so I think it's meant to be the ground.
Hi bud you can get a 3d printer online as l bought one for £100 spare or repair
the stamps are probably worth more than the game 😅😅
These maybe rare
Nintendo switch videos pls
Always this cheap chunk
i dont like the country guitar music IMO
